FLOWS II Project
The FLOWS II project dealt with research and
development of innovative technologies for
log wood combustion. Log wood stoves fasci-
nate people and therefore will always be in
use. Especially because of the regional availa-
bility of the fuel they will play an important
role in the future. Nevertheless they have to
meet certain challenges:
• Increasing efficiency for supporting the
2020 goals
• Minimum emissions for better air qual-
ity
• Broad applicability (heating and possi-
bly cooling, operation in low energy
houses)
The everlasting burning candle…
… to bring us light and heat. The candle burner is a combustion concept, which allows to
burn briquettes like a candle and to control combustion velocity. Low emissions and low
possible heat output are innovative properties for the use in low-energy houses.

The aim of the project FLOWS II was to start
the development of different products to meet
this challenges. The candle burner is a result of
this project in cooperation of Josef Lumper
and BIOENERGY2020+.
On an automatic up and down moving grate
the briquette is transported continuously into
the combustion chamber and burns like a
candle. The “briquette candle burner” benefits
from the low combustion velocity of briquettes
and the uniform combustion conditions of the
quasi-automatic concept. Minimum emissions
and maximum efficiency are the result of this
combustion principle for which a patent was
applied for.
The combustion of log wood suffers from
negative conditions at the beginning and end
of a burn-off. During the main combustion
phase optimum combustion conditions are
possible. In order to guarantee these optimum
conditions for long periods the grate of the
candle burner moves up. In order to reach low
a power output for nowadays heat demands
the briquettes are burnt vertically like a candle.
This concept allows almost constant combus-
tion conditions above the fuel in the combus-
tion chamber.
Marketability
The briquette candle burner is an absolute
novel product on the market. The concept
combines the advantages of a log wood stove
and a pellet stove. The flame looks like a log
wood flame, low power output like a pellet
stove is possible down to 2,5 kW by the mov-
ing grate. At the same time minimum emis-
sions and optimum comfort for the user is
reached. The prototype of the project already
keeps the emission limit values of pellet stoves
in Germany an Austria, the current most strin-
gent in Europe.
With the unique selling proposition of this
innovative combustion principle and the eco-
friendly properties a high market demand is
expected. The Austrian patent already is al-
ready granted, the European was applied for.

Impact and effects
The development of the candle burner will
directly affect the market for log wood stoves.
The candle burner will define a new state of
the art concerning emissions and low possible
heat output. A positive environmental impact
is expected by saving green house gas emis-
sions and fossil fuels whilst minimum emis-
sions contribute for improving air quality.
