Intensive use of cultural landscape
The last decades show a dramatically decrease of
species in cultural landscapes

Mining Industry in Germany
Land consumption for raw material production
2014 per day = 7 hectares:
3,6 hectares for building materials (5 time the size
of a football pitch)
2,2 hectares for lignite
0,9 hectares for peat
0,3 hectares for industrial minerals

Practical perspectives - Research
Fundamental and applied research
Development of a quarry – support and resettlement of
butterflies
(more information: www.quarrylifeaward.com)
Great impact with little effort – optimization of reptile
habitats by using existing materials

Practical perspectives - Conservation
Grazing promotes a dynamic landscape
(example: Urzeit Weide GbR, Blaubeuren)

Knowledge Transfer – Employees
Training courses for mining employees with a strong
focus on practical approach
High comprehensibility of presentations and training
materials is a must

Scientists in practice – Lived Culture
More restoration ecologists in
mining companies
Promotion of Internships
Promotion of in-service training
Invest as industry in the
education of experts - e.g.
through financial support of
doctoral research studies

Lack of field ecologists – The Decline in Species Experts
Several surveys show a tremendous decline in species
experts
21 % loss of species experts over the last 20 years
7.6 % of the current species experts are younger than 30 years
lack of junior staff
(Frobel, K. & H. Schlumprecht (2016): Erosion der Artenkenner. – Naturschutz und Landschaftsplanung 4)
If we believe in a sustainable development
Schools, universities, NGO‘s and industry have a common
responsibility to stop this trend
