Transesterification

1Collected used vegetable oil is settled and the oil is drawn from the top and the waste is discarded.

2Vegetable oil is heated to 220F and filtered down to 15 microns (a human hair is 100 microns in diameter).

3Vegetable oil is transesterified with caustic alcohol mixture at 145F for 3 hours which splits the oil into methyl esters and glycerin. The dark colour of the glycerin is because the oil has been heated – unused oil will be yellow in colour, not clear.

4Glycerin is distilled at temperatures in excess of 260F for 48 hours to recover excess alcohol and then filtered one final time before being made into soap. This gives us a sterilized glycerin which is free of any bacterial residue or animal proteins.

Strong Biofuels Technology

Strong Biofuels carbon friendly Biodiesel is a perfect replacement for mineral based diesel. Where the use of 100% biodiesel is not possible, for example where car manufacturers warranties would be impeded, blending with conventional diesel is used to ensure that product requirements are met. It can be used as an On-Road and Off-Road fuel, heating media and as an electricity generator fuel.

We have ‘in-house’ developed reliable scalable Biodiesel Reactors. Our chemistry and engineering expertise has enabled us to economically maximize output and consistent quality.

Technical staff, Chemists, Engineers, Designers and consultants are all used in our approach to process, design and implementation. This leads to a true, detailed understanding of the engineering process characteristics, rates and costs thus creating certainty and repeatability.

We can adapt to any UCO supplies with a pre-treatment step of the free fatty acids with our continuous esterification system. We can provide upstream and downstream process and designs to make best use of our installation: centrifuge system, ion-exchange resin columns, filtration skids, and methanol recovery systems.

Our ongoing ‘Quality Assurance’ means that we are constantly improving our efficiency, upgrading areas of our plant, transforming the working conditions of our employees with the ultimate aim of benefiting all involved.

Process Benefits:• Economical and energy efficient.

• Biodiesel is nontoxic, biodegradable, and suitable for sensitive environments.

• Unique combination of catalyst-KOH and reactive distillation allows use of a wide variety of low value UCO up to 100% free fatty acid to be converted into high quality biodiesel.

• Extensive knowledge base supported by commercial operation in the UK, with an (up to) 72000L per day production capacity.

• Novel and automated reaction system improves efficiency and allows UCO and Biodiesel smooth switching.

• The process route chemistry inherently produces a clean glycerol stream, which can be easily upgraded to pharmaceutical grade etc.

StrongBiofuels maintains its own in-house and independently accredited control procedures.

The professional choice for biodiesel systems and technology

Strong Biofuels Ltd is an enthusiastic and accredited biodiesel manufacturer with a certifiable production track record. A wealth of practical design and operational experience has been condensed over time making our biodiesel product one of the finest and consistent on the market today.

Strong Biofuels Technology

Why Biodiesel?Biodiesel is a clean burning high performance alternative fuel, produced from renewable oil resources. Although it does not contain petroleum derivatives it remains soluble with regular diesel creating blends of variable proportions and it can be used in conventional diesel engines without modification.*

Environmental Impact of Alternative Energy?Biodiesel is essentially derived from the conversion of sunlight to energy. Vegetation, such as canola, sunflower and jatropha adsorb CO2 from the atmosphere during its growth cycle. Combustion of plant products discharges this CO2 uptake back into the atmosphere to be consumed by other plants or animals. Biodiesel does not, therefore, increase the Greenhouse Effect unlike fossil fuels.

A Greener Future Starts Here• Burns 75% cleaner than conventional diesel

fossil fuels

• Substantially reduces Hx, CO, SO2 and PM10 exhaust emissions

• Offers CO2 neutrality

• Improves engine performance

• Increases fuel lubricity by 65%

• Virtually zero sulphur content

• Zero aromatic content (toluene and benzene)

• Comparable energy and power content to ULSD

• Flash point of 150 °C against 60°C for mineral diesel

• Significant reduction in particulates (soot) and hydrocarbons

• 70% reduction of carbon monoxide emissions in diesel exhausts

• Non toxic and biodegradable; fully degraded from a waterway environment within approximately 28 days

• Significant lubricant characteristics enabling a reduction in wear

• Extended efficiency for injectors and for all engines using ULSD resulting in lower maintenance costs

Research & Development Moving ForwardsEngines have continued to develop as the knowledge of combustion processes has increased, as new technologies have become available, as demand for new types of engines has arose, and as environmental constraints on emissions spectra have been enforced.

Strong Biofuel Quality –Repeatable, Reliable, Certifiable.lt is essential to equate feedstock variance stabilisation, conversion & thermal efficiency against residence time and energy recovery thus yielding a broad holistic mechanism. Commercial experience has shown time over that the technical viability of a bio-refinery, more often than not, hinges on repeatable, reliable and certifiable product quality combined with a stable and unified energy recovery mechanism in line with The Environment Agencies fiscal definitions as stipulated in low impact or full iPPC licensing regimes. Satisfying the key product parameters on time, in spec within regulated parameters is vital. Strong Biofuels continues to refine and produce premium grade biodiesel whilst also providing a dedicated and experienced iPPC filing protocol.

Accreditations and CertificatesStrong Biofuels Ltd is an Environment Agency licenced and permitted, waste carrier, broker and dealer. We are also accredited for ISO 14001 – Environmental Management System and ISO 9001 – Quality Management System and hold a current ISCC Certificate according to the Renewable Energy Directive (RED).

The last 25 years has seen an explosive growth in technology as the issues of air pollution, fuel cost and terminal crude supplies have become increasingly important. Research and Development is currently in progress to ensure the next generation of bio-ethanol and biodiesel fuel stocks satisfy the ultimate demands of high performance diesel, petrol and hybrid power plants.

Strong Biofuels Leading the Way...Strong Biofuels actively embraces new ideas, concepts and technological improvements and we are constantly developing in line with best practice and philosophy to address these issues.
