Summary of Ongoing Research: My clinical and molecular pharmacology lab is currently working on both basic and clinical aspects of pharmacology. There are three major themes of my research lab. 1. Molecular pathophysiology of metabolic disorders including metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and neurodegenerative disorders. We are looking for various genetic determinats and various cytokines involved in pathogenesis of metabolic disorders are related complications. 2. Role of herbal formulations against metabolic and inflammatory disorders. We are using animal models to study the efficacy of herbal & ayurvedic formulations namely Embilica Officinalis and curcumin against oxidative stress, inflammation and metal toxicity. We are also working on use of herbal formulations as add on therapy in diabetes, metabolic syndrome and NAFLD. 3. Randomised controlled trials toassess the comparative efficacy of insulin sensitizers in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. We are interested to study the effect of drugs mainly metformin, pioglitazone and statins on lipid profile corrections, metabolic syndrome and related consequences. We are also looking for the molecular mechanism behind the effect of these drugs.
