Biochemistry Word Wall
Biomolecules• An organic molecule produced by living
organisms and made mostly of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen
Organic molecules• Molecules that contain carbon; the
“chemicals of life”
Monomer
• Small molecules that are the subunits or building blocks of larger molecules
Polymer
• A chain of many monomer molecules bonded together to form a large molecule
Carbohydrates• Group of organic biomolecules made up of C,
H and O and the include sugars, starches, and cellulose
Lipids• Group of organic biomolecules made up of C,
H and O and that include fats, waxes, oils, phospholipids and steroids.
Proteins• Group of organic biomolecules made up of C,
H, O and N that are chains of many amino acids bonded together.
Nucleic Acids• Group of organic biomolecules made up of C,
H, O, N, and P and that include DNA and RNA.
Dehydration Synthesis
• The creation of a bond between monomers that releases a molecule of water when the bond is created; used to build biomolecules
Hydrolysis
• The breaking of the bonds between monomers of a biomolecule using a molecule of water to break the bond.
-saccharide• Sugar
Number Prefixes
• Mono – one
• Di – two
