PCOS and FertilityDate: Wednesday 25 January

Hours of learning content: 7

Cost: $149

PCOS is an incredibly common hormone problem in women, and one of the leading causes of infertility. It is estimated that up to 25% of women of child bearing age have polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), yet are unaware until such time that they start attempting to conceive. In this module you will be introduced to never before discussed categories and subcategories of PCOS that will help the practitioner more effectively address many different presentations of PCOS.

Topics covered include:

• Discover why what you learned in school is important but won’t always be effective

• Discover some of the most common misconceptions about this diagnosis that keep your patient from improving

• Learn how patients with no cycle and extremely irregular cycles conceived naturally

• How to address dysfunctional uterine bleeding.

Recurrent MiscarriageDate: Wednesday 26 April

Hours of learning content: 6.5

Cost: $149

During this module, practitioners will be introduced to most common variables regarding recurrent pregnancy loss (RCPL) and how to address this effectively. The information presented will also assist in developing an understanding of the unique emotional turmoil these couples experience and how to help them cope physiologically and emotionally.

Topics covered include:

• Thyroid and adrenal components of RCPL that are often overlooked

• A revisit to genetic mutations and their importance. What is the latest research?

• Autoimmune involvement in RCPL, and how to assess and address this

• Fibroids and uterine abnormalities will be discussed.

Fertility Over 40Date: Wednesday 26 July

Hours of learning content: 4.5

Cost: $129

A significant portion of couples facing fertility difficulties are approaching,  or over 40 years of age. There are specific imbalances and dysfunctions which are more likely to be associated with this portion of the population. This module will assist in developing a thorough understanding of the most common hurdles faced by couples/individuals over 40, how to assess for,  and manage them.

Topics covered include:

• What is realistic regarding fertility over 40

• Special considerations regarding more mature couples dealing with fertility issues

• Adjustments to the Five Step Fertility Solution for couples considered “too old”

• Revisit AMH and other tests that help or hinder these couples.

Secondary Fertility and Working with Patients Undergoing IVFDate: Wednesday 25 October

Hours of learning content: 4.5

Cost: $129

It can happen often that couples conceive their first child(ren) naturally without trouble, yet then experience difficulties the second, third, etc. time around. Furthermore, when couples are considering IVF it can be difficult to understand the best and safest methods of supporting them effectively. This module will explore secondary infertility and approaches to supporting IVF patients.

Topics covered include:

• Typically overlooked areas related to secondary fertility issues

•  Unique emotional aspects of infertility and how to address these

• Taking an effective history related to IVF and how this information can help with an effective treatment plan

• How to use herbs effectively before, during and after IVF

• Understanding the mindset of couples having undergone multiple IVF cycles that do not produce viable pregnancies, and how to help and support them.

The Australian population is ageing, while the incidence of obesity and metabolic syndrome is a persistent threat to the health of many. More and more, ageing and overweight customers are seeking solutions to support their wellbeing, and this represents a significant opportunity in the pharmacy setting. Obesity and sarcopenia (muscle loss) are closely associated with an increased risk of pre-diabetes and the development of type 2 diabetes, whilst having associations with additional age-related conditions (e.g. dementia).

This workshop will explore the various pathways involved in the functional and metabolic health of lean muscle mass, the benefits of high quality whey protein for supporting lean muscle mass and weight management, and the effect of microbial balance in regulating systemic inflammation and its influence on glucose and insulin signalling.

Learning objectives• Understand the various causes of metabolic imbalance as we age and

the interplay between hormones, the microbiome, inflammation and their influence on ‘lean muscle mass

• Learn how chronic stress and adrenal maladaptation can lead to abdominal obesity and increase the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the ageing population

• Discover the benefits of optimal nutrition, exercise and lifestyle modification and how they can assist in the management of age-related sarcopenia, and type 2 diabetes

• Identify why and when to ‘recommend’ the IsoWhey Clinical Nutrition and Weight Management formulas to support the health of ageing and/or overweight customers.

Some of the more common presentations in people with thyroid disorders are emotional and mental health issues. Depending on the type of thyroid condition, symptoms can typically include depression, mood swings, difficulties with cognition, failing memory and anxiety.

While the official incidence of hypothyroidism in Australia is estimated at 5.4 in 1000, the rate of subclinical hypothyroidism, and thus, related mood and cognitive issues, is likely to be much higher. For the clinician, this is a pressing health concern that requires a comprehensive understanding of thyroid function, its relation to wider endocrine physiology and its impact on neurotransmitter and brain function. Only then can the practitioner implement an effective therapeutic strategy.

In this webinar Beth Bundy ND will examine hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism and their influence on mood changes and intellectual performance. Adrenal hormones and neurotransmitters will also be reviewed as essential elements in relation to proper thyroid function.

This webinar will demonstrate how these synergistic pathways can be effectively assessed using functional pathology testing and case studies to provide better treatment protocols for your patients that may be suffering abnormal symptoms from their ‘normal’ results.

Learning objectives• Develop a systems biology approach to thyroid physiology and function

• Understand the types of thyroid imbalances and their clinical implications

• Discover how endocrine - nervous system cross talk affects mood and cognition

• Effectively address the balance between adrenals, thyroid and sex hormones

• Understand how to best measure thyroid and adrenal hormones using standard blood pathology

• Discover how to assess thyroid and adrenal hormones using functional pathology

• Devise effective treatment strategies for thyroid, adrenals and neurotransmitter regulation.

21-23 APRIL 2017 5th BioCeuticals Research Symposium

BioCeuticals warmly welcomes you to the 5th BioCeuticals Research Symposium, a three-day masterclass highlighting the future of personalised medicine.

As we continue to better understand the drivers of chronic illness it is becoming increasingly apparent that there are certain common, underlying factors which present as consistent features throughout most disease states. Certainly, the latent influence of persistent low grade inflammation and oxidative stress are well described in the literature, but these are only outcomes of more fundamental forces that are now universal in their presence and almost impossible to escape. Of particular relevance are the effects from the overconsumption of carbohydrates and refined sugars, exposure to synthetic chemicals and toxins, and disruption to the critical balance of the intestinal microflora.

From 21-23 April 2017, the 5th BioCeuticals Research Symposium will provide you with an opportunity to explore this critical relationship in depth. We have invited key experts in the fields of functional gastroenterology, endocrinology, toxicology, and genomics to examine how their research and clinical insights intersect to reveal how you can better assess an individual’s health risks to create more personalised and effective treatment strategies.

Under the theme The Age of Personalised Medicine, this event will take the concept of functional medicine to the next level. By marrying the influences of genomics and systems biology, you will learn how to move away from the ‘trial-and-error’ approach that so typically leads to patient dissatisfaction. Our speakers will reveal a targeted clinical model defined by decision-making that distinguishes, in advance, those patients most likely to benefit from a given treatment from those who will not.

The much celebrated BioCeuticals three-day masterclass format is a truly unique experience and will ensure you have the opportunity to explore every theme in depth. Each of our speakers will present their topics across several extended plenary sessions and workshops before they come together to identify key interrelationships in a series of panel discussions and question-and-answer forums.

We warmly invite our valued practitioner clients to join us in this innovative program where you will be able to apply new insights and treatment strategies in your clinic the very next day.

BioCeuticals is delighted to have confirmed the following international integrative health speakers:

Dr Steven Sandberg-LewisND DHANP (USA) Dr Steven Sandberg-Lewis has been a practicing naturopathic physician since his graduation from National University of Natural Medicine (NUNM) in 1978. He has been a professor at NUNM since 1985, primarily focusing on gastroenterology and GI physical medicine.

He is a popular lecturer at functional medicine seminars, presents webinars and is frequently interviewed on issues of digestive health and disease. He is the author or co-author of several Townsend Letter award winning articles and the author of the medical textbook Functional Gastroenterology: Assessing and Addressing the Causes of Functional Digestive Disorders.

In 2010 he co-founded one of only four centres in the USA for Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) diagnosis, treatment, education and research – the SIBO Center at NUNM. In 2014 he was named one of the “Top Docs” in Portland Monthly magazine’s yearly healthcare issue and in 2015 was inducted into the OANP/NUNM Hall of Fame.

Within gastroenterology, he has special interest and expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (including microscopic colitis), irritable bowel syndrome (including post-infectious IBS), SIBO, hiatal hernia, gastro-oesophageal and bile reflux (GERD), biliary dyskinesia, and chronic states of nausea and vomiting.

Many of the patients referred to Dr Sandberg-Lewis have digestive conditions that have defied diagnosis and effective resolution. Often these patients desire naturopathic treatment options in lieu of the courses of treatments they have previously undergone. He understands diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, but also can assess function and often find successful treatments to regain a balance in the digestive system.

Dr Christopher W. Shade, BS MS PhD (USA)

Dr Christopher W. Shade obtained Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Lehigh University in environmental and aqueous chemistry. Dr Shade earned a PhD from the University of Illinois where he studied the environmental and analytical chemistries of mercury as well as advanced aquatic chemistry. During his PhD work, Dr Shade patented analytical technology for mercury speciation analysis and later founded Quicksilver Scientific, LLC in order to commercialise this technology. Shortly after starting Quicksilver Scientific, Dr Shade turned his focus to the human aspects of mercury exposure/toxicity and the human detoxification system. He has since developed specific clinical analytical techniques for measuring mercury exposure and a system of products to remove metallic and organic toxins by upregulation of innate detoxification biochemistry.

His current focus is at the intersection of neuroinflammatory issues, immune dysregulation, toxicity and infection – specifically how to peel away the layers of overlapping dysfunction in the sick individual until you get to a point at which the system rights itself.

Dr Denise Furness, PhD BSc RNutr REP (AUS)

Dr Denise Furness is a molecular geneticist, registered nutritionist and registered exercise professional. She conducted her PhD at CSIRO Human Nutrition, before completing a postdoctoral fellowship with the University of Adelaide’s Research Centre for Reproductive Health. Specifically, her research investigated folate nutrigenomics, methylation and DNA damage in relation to pregnancy outcomes. She has published her work in peer reviewed medical journals and regularly presents at national and international conferences. In 2012 Denise shifted from an academic research position to a consulting role at “Your Genes and Nutrition”, helping patients and practitioners understand the role of nutrigenomics and genetic testing in relation to various health outcomes. In particular, Denise is passionate about helping couples achieve optimum health and wellness to improve their chances for natural conception and healthy pregnancy outcomes. In addition, she holds regular educational seminars and workshops discussing the links between our genes and our environment and how these impact on our health throughout all the stages of the life cycle.

In this clinically-focussed workshop, gastrointestinal expert Alessandra Edwards will share with you the latest research and therapeutic approach to diagnose and treat small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and parasites such as Blastocystis hominis and Dientamoeba fragilis.

Alessandra will share a new perspective on the treatment of gastrointestinal infections that will focus on the restoration of the biomechanics involved in healthy digestion, rehabilitation of the gut microbiome and ecosystem, as well as addressing a malfunctioning gut/brain axis. This seminar will challenge the traditional therapeutic approach of weed, seed, feed for gastrointestinal infections in line with novel research into the microbiome and its functions.

You will learn how toxic microbial metabolites are affecting your treatment outcomes, why carbohydrate restrictive diets are detrimental in the long term and why antibiotic and antimicrobial therapies have a high failure rate for both SIBO and gastrointestinal infections. Alessandra will also share her therapeutic approach for complex, highly sensitive patients who present with multiple intolerances including salicylate, amine and histamine and who usually cannot tolerate nutritional interventions.

Learning objectives• Explore screening, testing and diagnosis: how to correctly identify

patients at risk for SIBO and gastrointestinal parasites• Discover the relationship between SIBO and common chronic disease

states• Evaluate gut brain axis imbalances and considerations for SIBO• Understand biomechanics: the role of adhesions, motility and

gastrointestinal valves dysfunction in SIBO• Analyse the role of biofilm and SIBO• Review the current literature and therapeutic considerations in regards to

the presence of parasites• Learn how to treat super-sensitive patients and those with complex

intolerances• Discover treatment strategies including dietary, herbal antimicrobials,

prebiotics, probiotics and ancillary therapeutics for correction and prevention of SIBO and parasites

• Recognise inflammation, methylation, immune dysfunction, nutrient deficiencies and their role in treatment-resistant SIBO and gastrointestinal infections

• Identify why and when to ‘recommend’ the IsoWhey Clinical Nutrition and Weight Management formulas to support the health of ageing and/or overweight customers
