Biocatalysts is an ambitious company employing bright committed individuals who are integral to the company achieving its long term goals.
Company HistoryBiocatalysts is a long established,
profitable, privately owned company
enjoying great relationships with its
stakeholders. It started life as a small
start-up and is now operating in purpose
built facilities just north of Cardiff in
Wales (UK). It is not a university spin
off company but enjoys strategic
relationships with many academic
institutions both in the United Kingdom
and globally.
The company was established in Wales in
the late eighties, started exporting in the early
1990s and is now a truly global company doing
business in 82 countries. Biocatalysts Inc was
incorporated in 2011, in Illinois USA, to further
develop the American market that has been so
fundamental to the growth of Biocatalysts over
the years. Having a dedicated team serving this
important market has made a huge difference
to the profile of Biocatalysts in the USA.
Other markets are supported either direct or
through a network of agents, the details of
which can be found at www.biocatalysts.com.
The company has enjoyed a stable history
with sustained growth year-on-year. It has
made considerable ongoing investments
in manufacturing plant, staff and laboratory
equipment, as well as always enjoying a sound
finance/investment strategy.
In 2004, the company relocated to a purpose
built facility with state-of-the-art laboratory and
production facilities with financial assistance
from the Welsh Government.

Our VisionWe will become and stay the world’s leading speciality enzyme development and manufacturing company and, by the quality and dedication of our people, exceed our customers’ expectations.
Enzymes can... surprise and delight, not a
traditional solution but an under-utilised one.
The breadth and depth of their applications
is not yet widely understood by many. Our
dedicated team of researchers, make it their
mission to understand and exploit everything
that these natural catalysts have to offer.
Enzymes do… the work of a small factory,
catalysing reactions to produce many
outcomes including functional and commercial.
Enzymes will… in the future be designed
intelligently, to deliver the optimal solution for
a process faster and more cost effectively
than is currently possible. The time to produce
small samples of unique enzymes will be short,
allowing customers to speed up new product
development. The use of enzymes will be far
more wide spread and consumers will be more
aware of the role they play in everyday life.
1. CompanyPhilosophyBiocatalysts was set up with customer service at its heart. The founding philosophy of the company was to make what the customer wants, not what production makes. This was a revolutionary approach in the 1980s and one that endeared us to many
customers, most of whom are still with the company today.
To achieve this philosophy, the company had to know what the customer wants. When the
company was founded in the mid eighties it was a new player in a mature market. Hence it
had to offer something new and better compared to that supplied by the competition. The
joint offering of custom tailored or novel enzyme development and exceptional customer
service were the differentiators giving Biocatalysts considerable competitive advantage.
Innovation has always been a major driver of the company, whether we achieve it by
adding new technical capabilities to benefit our customers, or implementing a suggestion
from a member of staff to improve a process or increase efficiency.
2.Boardof DirectorsBiocatalysts is a privately owned company
with a small board of directors chaired by
Dr Hans Wernicke, ex Sud-Chemie board
representative. Sud Chemie AG was
purchased by Clariant (a global speciality
chemical company) early in 2012.
Managing Director Stuart West has day
to day responsibility for the running of
the company.
He is an active member of the
KnowledgeTransfer Network’s
Biosciences (IB group). He is also a
campaigner to improve the skill levels
of scientists coming out of British
Universities and was on the SEMTA
Bioscience Sector Strategy Group (SSG)
and is now part of the Cogent SSG. He is
also a member of the CBI’s SME council
and the Institute of Directors (IOD).

3.Company CultureThe company has a strong culture which reflects the commitment and personalities of the stakeholders. Biocatalysts’ employees are recruited as
much for behaviours as for knowledge.
These performance driven employees
are empowered to make decisions and
recommend changes because they are all
aware of the company’s objectives.
Biocatalysts’ employees are enthusiastic
about the freedom they are given to meet
a challenge, solve a problem or develop
an idea. We actively encourage personal
development and growth, and opportunity is
wide open for people to develop in line with
the company’s long term vision.
Biocatalysts is a company that truly values
its employees and their commitment to
the company is demonstrated by their
low absenteeism and high take up rate of
development opportunities.

Stabilityinacyclicalworld….Due to the global nature of the business, there is always an economic downturn somewhere, where financial commitment to improving processes or developing new products comes second to “just surviving” in difficult times.During these times, Biocatalysts focuses on working with our customers so that when the
upturn comes, they are primed and ready to reap the rewards. Our team of development
scientists work with customers on a wide range of projects, from developing totally novel
new enzymes for new products that have never been commercially produced at all, to
solving a problem at just one stage of a 10 stage biocatalysis reaction that may have
brought a project to a complete halt.
We are able to do this in times of global recession because our focus on operating
strategy and financial stability means that we are able to look to the longer term and enjoy
supporting our customers through these difficult times. We are a company geared for
growth, constantly looking to reduce the time to market for new products (our own and
our customers’) whilst constantly improving our cost efficiencies internally.
“The companies that survive the
longest are the ones that work out
what they can uniquely give to the
world. Not just growth or money,
but their excellence, their respect for
others and their ability to make people
happy.” Charles Handy
4.TheEnzymeBlackBoxUsed to produce small samples of enzymes appropriate for our customers’ requirements, the Biocatalysts Black Box approach is a novel and exciting way of giving customers a unique solution which outputs a small sample of enzyme that is suitable for testing.
The whole process can currently be carried
out in a few weeks, which is many times
faster than other sources.
Introduction of new technology means that in
the future these times will reduce even further
and we will become the fastest enzyme
company in the world, able to deliver small
quantities of a completely novel enzyme by
intra or extracellular production.
5.CommercialisationThroughout the above process, the focus is on scalability and ensuring the process can be easily and reproducibly performed at industrially relevant scales.
This commercial focus is different to the
services provided by other organisations.
The speed with which this service can be
carried out can reduce the time to market
for our customers, and very often helps
them to launch new products earlier
than expected.
In relation to our Novel Enzyme
Development Services, our clients cover a
hugely broad base from aromas/flavours to
mining! Irrespective of the end application,
we have the expertise to identify and
manufacture commercial quantities of
novel enzymes to deliver a wide range
of functional benefits from small sample
through to commercially viable, stable large
scale product that can be shipped globally.

7.OurInvestmentinInnovationAs a company based around knowledge and innovation, it is only appropriate that >8% of sales revenue is invested into the New Product Development team for R&D purposes.
This ensures that the department is well resourced
to allow us the flexibility to work on both market
and customer funded projects. Each scientist
has their specialism, but can also be deployed to
other areas if a project requires it, allowing us to
be fast and flexible in response to our customers’
needs. The majority of our customers are looking
for an enzyme solution, therefore our focus
on development and scale up to commercial
production, in addition to straight research, gives
us considerable competitive advantage.
6.OurInnovationInnovation is at the core of Biocatalysts. Our culture is based on quality, customer service, technical knowledge and a desire to make positive changes through innovation
Innovation underpins our growth at
Biocatalysts, allowing us to better
serve our customers and other
stakeholders. We actively celebrate
innovation.
All Biocatalysts staff make positive
contributions to the generation and
implementation of ideas linked to
our working environment, processes
and infrastructure, in addition to
stimulating ideas for new enzyme
products.
Many of our stakeholders also
contribute ideas.
Companies committed to ‘Open
Innovation’ are ideal partners for us
to showcase our skills in this area
as we truly believe in the merits of
collaborating in an open, honest
and mutually beneficial manner.
We proactively identify, and bring
into the company, cutting edge
technology that will change the way
that the enzyme industry develops in
the future and offers our customers
unique enzymes at very reasonable
commercial costs.
Customers that share information and
actively involve us as a “partner of choice”
get the best from us, as we share our
enzyme knowledge to achieve the best
outcome. In addition to high profile food
industry customers, we also work with
many of the large API/healthcare/
chemical companies.
118.OurCustomersWe work best on a collaborative basis with our customers. The level of technical knowledge that our customers have varies hugely, so a key part of our role is working with them at a meaningful level.
