Her Early lifeEmma Lazarus was born on July 22,1849 in a Jewish home in New York. With 5 sisters and a brother. Her family was well to do and often had over important quests. Her and her siblings had private tutors and were taught literature, math, history, geography, music, and languages.Emma became interested in poetry and books. When she gave herself time to play she gave her dolls the roll of Greek goddesses and heroes instead of the normal rolls of house.Emma wrote a book of poetry and got it published with the help of her dad. The Jews helped rebuild America because they were eager to work.Emma met her favorite poet Mr. Ralph Waldo Emerson. They wrote letters back and forth and Emma found a lot of inspiration from him.She wrote him about her book she made and he said he wanted a copy. She wrote a second book and gave it to Mr. Emerson to check he wrote a letter back full of admiration.Mr. Emerson wrote a book with poems from different people in it. Emma bought the book immediately and leafed through it looking for one of her poems. She found that none of her poems were in the book and she wrote a letter to him asking him why. A little while later she decided to no longer be his friend.

Early years continued In the time that Emma was growing up women didn’t have many

rights at all. They weren’t aloud to go out in public without a man to guard them and they were not aloud to own property. Women were seen as weak minded and fragile and men thought that all they were good at was to keep house, cook, clean, and take care of the children.
