Name: Brooke Jordan

Title of lab: Environment

Problem statement:

algal bloom is seen more prolifc where there is runo rom armer brown’sgarden than where there is runo rom the kitchen sink.

Hypothesis:

Run o rom armer brown’s garden contains high level o nitrates andphosphates which causes algal bloom.

Apparatus:

Labels test tubes phosphorus test kit nitrates test kit samples rom runo !garden runo tap water" measuring c#linder

Method:

$. %btain water samples rom garden runo and another sample rom tapwater.

&. Label our test tubes '$ '& B$ B&.(. )lace *ml o garden runo water in each o the test tubes labelled '$

and '&.+. )lace *ml o tap water in each o the test tubes labelled B$ and B&.*. ,sing the nitrates test kit test both solution in test tube '$ and B$ or

0olor scales1

2hen '$ is tested with the nitrates test kit the solution would turn darkpink which indicates the presence o nitrates in the garden runo solution.2hen the color is compared to the color scale a dark pink color would beobserved which indicates the high levels o nitrate ions present. %n the otherhand B$ shows a #ellow color change which indicates little nitrogen present.2hen both '& and B& is tested with the phosphorus test kit '& !gardensolution" shows a color change to blue. 2hen compared with the color scalethe color o the solution indicates that there are high levels o phosphorus insolution. B& displa#s a cream cloud# white color change and it is concludedthat there is little phosphorus present as compared to garden runo .

Interpretation of results:

)hosphates and nitrates are naturall# occurring chemicals that are essentialto plant growth. 3or natural plants to grow and thrive the# need a number o chemical elements but the most important nitrogen phosphorus andpotassium. 4ost packaged ertili5ers contain these * macronutrients. 't

harm ul levels phosphates and nitrates in water lead to algal blooms. 'nalgal bloom is a rapid increase in the densit# o algae in an a6uatic s#stem.'lgae can multipl# 6uickl# in waterwa#s with an overabundance o nitrogenand phosphorus particularl# when the water is warm and the weather iscalm. 7n this e8periment high levels o phosphorus and nitrates wereobserved in test tubes '$ and '& as both contained water rom garden
