Bio 206 Presentation
• Goal is to develop student skills in information and technology literacy– Information Literacy: Develop the ability to find and
use information to support the process of critical and analytical pursuits.
– Objectives:
• I. Articulate an information need and access the information effectively and efficiently.
• II. Evaluate information and its sources critically.• III. Incorporate selected information into your
knowledge base and value system.
Bio 206 Presentation
• Goal is to develop student skills in Technology Literacy– Technology Literacy: Use appropriate technology to
support the process of critical and analytical pursuits.– Objectives:
• I. Understand the use of technological tools appropriate to a discipline.
• II. Identify and select appropriate technology tools to facilitate learning
• III. Use technological tools effectively and responsibly.
Bio 206 Presentation
• Overall requirement:– Working singly or in pairs, develop a small
PowerPoint Presentation.– Presentation will be submitted electronically,
you don’t have to present it!– Must discuss a single plant or animal disease
involving one or more of the systems discussed in class.
PLANT SYSTEMS
• Vascular System • Xylem- WILT DISEASES
• Phloem- VIRUS INFECTIONS OF PHLOEM
• Reproductive System• DISEASE OF FLOWERS AND FRUITS
ANIMAL SYSTEMS
• DIGESTIVE e.g. Peptic ulcer
• CIRCULATORY e.g. Hypertension & GAS EXCHANGE e.g Asthma
• EXCRETORY e.g. Kidney diseases
• NEUROMUSCULAR e.g. Multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy
Writing Requirements• Start with title page listing your name(s)
• Identify name of disease.
• What system is affected?
• How is system affected?
• What is the causal agent of the disease?– Is it genetic?– Is it caused by a pathogenic organism? If so, what?– Is the disease process influenced or aggravated by an
environmental component?
Writing Requirements Continued
• Appropriately cite in your text at least one recent (last 5 years) research journal article (primary source.) See Format below.
• Appropriately cite in your text at least one web source (internet site.) See Format below.
Writing Requirements Continued• Conclude with:
– 1. Bibliography containing an alphabetical list of literature citations for all references in appropriate formats
– 2- Evaluation of Information Source List. What electronic literature search tools (e.g. BIOSIS, MEDLINE, AGRICOLA, Web Search engines) you employed to find your resources.
– If you use more than two sources, you need to complete this assessment for only two.
– Describe each source and be sure to label the source as a primary source (original journal article), an Internet source, or other category (e.g. textbook).
Writing Requirements Continued• Evaluation of Information Sources • For two sources, identify:
How you found the information. (Did you look in a journal in the library? Do a web search using a browser? Use a scientific data base like BIOSIS or MEDLINE?)
How successful the search was. (Did you find useful information quickly? Was the method easy to use?)
How reliable or credible you believe the source is. (How can you tell whether you trust this source of information?)
Writing Requirements Continued
• To determine how credible an Internet source is, you might want to consider:
• a. What is its domain? e.g. .com, .org., edu, etc.• b. What are the author’s qualifications?• c. Is the site up-to-date?• d. Is the site accurate?• e. Does the site have a hidden agenda? Are they
trying to sell you something?
• f. Who is responsible for the site? Is there any editorial control?
Format for Literature Citations
• Most biological journals follow formats described by the Council of Biological Editors (CBE) in the CBE Style Manual. Citation examples are provided in Name-Year format. Bibliography items are listed alphabetically at the end of the research paper. These items are referred to in the body of the paper using the In-Text style. A summary is given below:
Citing a Book• In Bibliography: • Voet D, Voet JG. 1990. Biochemistry. New York: J Wiley. 1223 p. • In-Text:• (Voet and Voet 1990) If there are more than two authors then
use (Voet et al. 1990).
Format for Literature Citations
Citing a Book Chapter (or other part with different author)
• In Bibliography: • Kuret JA, Murad F. 1990. Adenohypophyseal hormones
and related substances. In: Gilman AG, Rall TW, Nies AS, Taylor P, editors. The pharmacological basis of therapeutics. 8th ed. New York: Pergamon. p 1334-60.
• In-Text: • (Kuret and Murad 1990) If there are more than two
authors then use (Kuret et al. 1990).
Format for Literature Citations
• Citing a Journal Article• In Bibliography: • Johnson DL, Lynch WE Jr. 1992. Panfish use of and angler

• In-Text:• (Johnson and Lynch 1992) If there are more than two authors
then use (Johnson et al. 1990).
Format for Literature Citations
• Citing an Internet Source
• CBE doesn’t have standards for this yet, but you should provide:• 1)Author's name (if known) • 2) Date of publication or last revision • 3) Title of document • 4) Title of complete work (if relevant) • 5) URL, in angle brackets • 6) Date of access• In Bibliography example:• Council of Biology Editors. 1999 Oct 5. CBE home page.
<http://www.councilscienceeditors.org>. Accessed 1999 Oct 7. • In-Text:• (Council of Biology Editors 1999)
Format for Literature Citations
• Citing Electronic Journals
• In Bibliography:• Slater PJB, Jones AE. Timing of songs and distance call
learning in zebra finches. Anim Behav [serial online] 1995; 49(2):123-248. Available from: OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center via the Internet (http://journals.ohiolink.edu/etext/).
• In-Text:• (Slater and Jones 1995) If there are more than two
authors then use (Slater et al. 1990).
Technical Requirements• Must use Microsoft PowerPoint (Either PC or
Mac platform can be used.)• Finished presentation must fit on standard
(1.4Mb) floppy disk.• Must contain text and at least one inserted
graphic (photo or graph.) If your image comes from a website, make sure to read the fair use copyright policy and attribute the source of the image in compliance with this policy.

How do I get help?• PowerPoint help is available for new users. Try:
– Handouts prepared by Computer Services available in the Franz Hall Microcomputer Lab.
– Computer Services will put on a class for you on either Tuesday,Thursday or Friday afternoons - See sign-up sheet.

– Help function built into the PowerPoint software.
• DUE DATE: FRIDAY, NOV. 15• One point deduction per day for late
submissions.
• Turn in one standard floppy disk plus a printout using 6 handouts/sheet (Use the Microsoft PowerPoint format, not the general printing format for this.)
