Standard Libraries Group
• British Water is the trade association that is both overseeing the generation and custodian of Standard Library collateral
• Developing guidelines to ensure consistency in the electronic data provided by suppliers for use in the design, construction, operation & maintenance of projects within the water industry
Standard Libraries Group
• To develop the building blocks for all products used in the water sector, which at present are as follows:-
• Mechanical Couplings – Viking Johnson & AVK• Valves – AVK & Viking Johnson• Actuators – Auma / Rotork (TBA)• DI Pipes & fittings – SGP• PE Pipes & Fittings - GPS• Pumps – Xylem & Pump Centre• Manhole Covers – SGP & EJO
Standard Libraries - “BIM” comprises two elements:-
Level of Detail (LOD)Graphical representation (3D drawing / image) to provide a pictorial view & dimensional information that allows a design engineer to place the product in a drawing
Level of Information (LOI)The detailed technical information relating to the product that is required by:-• Design engineer = to select appropriate product• Contractor = to procure & install the product• Client = to operate & maintain the product over design life

Pump Centre BIM Awareness Day
3rd November 2016

Today’s presentation
• BIM4Water Product Data Templates (PDTs)
• Background
• Pump Centre role
• BIM4Water & WIMES (Water Industry M & E specifications)
• WIMES summary
• Specifying BIM Level 2 via WIMES
• WIMES datasheets & BIM4Water
BIM4Water PDTs - background
• Product Data Templates (PDTs) are currently being developed by the
BIM4Water Standard Libraries Working Group for valves, actuators,
couplings, pipes and pumps
• Within the project design & installation phase, designers will be able to
access equipment performance & design information via the PDTs. This will
facilitate process design and verify that equipment can be installed in the
space available
• Within the asset management phase, the asset manager will be able to
access equipment operation and maintenance information via the PDT and if
necessary obtain information on spare/replacement parts
• The use of PDTs will avoid the need to re-enter asset technical information
into specifications and asset management databases during the project
design and delivery process, thereby reducing costs and reducing the
likelihood of mistakes
BIM4Water PDTs – Pump Centre role
• The Pump Centre is currently helping the BIM4Water Standard Libraries
Group develop pump PDTs for use within the water industry
• The Pump Centre are well placed to do this because of their wide knowledge
of the pump types commonly used within the water industry, gained over the
last 20 years via the WIMES activity
• The current pump PDT has been ‘developed’ from the ‘baseline’ CIBSE pump
PDT by reference to the existing WIMES pump datasheets
• Assuming that the pump PDT and WIMES datasheets will both form part of
the BIM Level 2 dataset for a typical pumping station/installation, there is
perhaps a need to review the contents of the PDT and the WIMES datasheet
to ensure there is no unnecessary duplication of information?
BIM4Water PDTs – Pump Centre Role
• There is presumably a need for the BIM4Water Standard Libraries Group to
develop PDTs for other equipment items used within the water industry
(screens, mixers, aerators, blowers, scrapers, etc.)
• The Pump Centre can assist with this process, however, perhaps there is
perhaps also a need to agree timescales for the development of the PDTs
and discuss how more OEMs can be encouraged to take part in the process?

WIMES summary
• WIMES stands for Water Industry Mechanical & Electrical Specifications
• The objective of the ‘WIMES activity’ is to provide water companies with
specifications that will enable them to procure M & E equipment which is fit
for purpose and provides the lowest Life Cycle Costs (LCC) at a competitive
purchase price
• The WIMES have been managed by the Pump Centre since 1996
• There are now over 70 WIMES available, ranging from relatively simple
machinery items, such as pumps and motors, to complicated pieces of
package plant such as odour control equipment
• A full list of the WIMES and their associated resources can be found on the
Pump Centre website (www.pumpcentre.com)
WIMES summary
All of the UK’s WASCs and half of the UK WSCs use the WIMES:
Affinity Water
Anglian Water
Bristol Water
Cambridge Water (South Staffs)
Dwr Cymru (Welsh Water)
Essex & Suffolk Water
Northern Ireland Water
Northumbrian Water
Portsmouth Water
Scottish Water
Severn Trent Water
South East Water
South West Water
Southern Water
Sutton and East Surrey Water
Thames Water
United Utilities
Wessex Water
Yorkshire Water
The EA and Network Rail also use the WIMES, as do a number of overseas
water utilities (including Irish Water)
Specifying BIM Level 2 via WIMES
• WIMES can obviously start to specify that water industry OEMs provide
product information that is compliant with BIM Level 2, but what should be
the timescales for doing this?
• Presumably, water industry OEMs already have 3D CAD models of their
products, but are these compliant with BIM Level 2?
• The BIM4Water SLG has only just started to develop water industry PDTs,
so far with the involvement of a relatively small number of OEMs
• What is the best way to encourage more OEMs to take part in this process
and is the BIM4Water SLG resourced to manage the simultaneous
development of number of water industry PDTs?
WIMES datasheets & BIM4Water
• WIMES datasheets should evolve (via a number of revisions) through project
tender stage, contract award and finally equipment handover. The final
version of the datasheet should go into the project file, as a record of the
equipment specification
• Within the BIM strategy, the ‘evolving’ WIMES data sheet could form part of
the data made available at the various ‘COBie Data Drops’. WIMES
datasheets are currently MS Word files, so they will need to be converted to
MS Excel files to allow this occur
• As discussed earlier, it is envisaged that water industry PDTs will contain a
reference/link to the associated WIMES datasheet, to enable designers/asset
managers to access a ‘greater level of detail’ relating to equipment
performance and design than is available via the PDT alone
