BIM käyttöön Britanniassa - Onko konservatiivinen Britannia ohittamassa Suomen?
Prof. Arto Kiviniemi Head of Design Directorate School of Built Environment
University of Salford
Point of the Departure In spring 2010 most people in UK felt
strongly that modelling will not be important for AEC professionals in the near future: ”The industry needs people who can make
drawings with CAD. There is no industry demand for BIM and we cannot start teaching it. 3D modelling is expensive and too complicated for students.”

Current messages around BIM, such as the client requirements…
…fast growing BIM adoption…

…reported benefits…
… and huge ROI numbers…
...have resulted a strong driver which often is related to
envy and greed We must also get those huge profits!
or fear Are we losing our position on the market?
…but do people really understand the concept?

BIM maturity model
Key question: What benefits are we trying to achieve with BIM?
Doing something just because everyone else seems to be doing
it, is not a valid reason.
Government Construction Strategy Published 31st May by the Cabinet Office The Cabinet Office will co-ordinate Government’s drive to the
development of standards enabling all members of the supply chain to work collaboratively through Building Information Modelling (BIM).
This will be a phased process working closely with industry groups, in order to allow time for industry to prepare for the development of new standards and for training.
Government will require fully collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data being electronic) as a minimum by 2016. A staged plan will be published with mandated milestones showing measurable progress at the end of each year.
A detailed process map and definitions for several levels of the client requirements are under development.

Conclusions UK is currently clearly behind Finland in the BIM
adoption, but development has been unbelievably fast in the last 12 months Companies are moving rapidly, investing in BIM and looking
for advice Individuals are looking for BIM skills
CIC (Construction Industry Council) has formed a BIM Forum Representation from all major professional, industry and
academic associations Zero resistance in the industry
Leading UK companies are very advanced – even in global perspective – and actively looking for research collaboration
