JULY 2012 TABLE TALK 3

In this day and age we have way too many people who make c o m m i t m e n t s and do not follow through. Do yourself a favor. If you decide to try something

new and maybe a little difficult, don’t give up on it right away. For most of the pool leagues in this area we have this problem with some players. There are few things in life that are as distracting or aggravating as having someone make the commitment to try a new format just to have them drop out of the league as soon as they find out that it is going to take some effort on their part to learn something new. If you make this kind of a start in a new league setting, at least give it one whole session to see if it gets easier and who knows, you might even start to have fun with it. I shoot on 3 different leagues as of now. If I had more time I would probably shoot on more than that. The different formats and rules make me use what little brains I have left. This kind of exercise is akin to reading 2-3 books at the same time.

If you can keep the story lines separate you have increased the usable part of your mind and given yourself the power of concentration. God gave us a brain to use not to gather dust. We all know right from wrong even if we don’t always do it. When you know what is right and what will make things better for you and you ignore it, you are just asking for trouble in your life. If nothing else you will be labeled a quitter. The only time I know of where that label is a good thing is when you are breaking a bad habit. I quit smoking when I was just a teenager in high school. I can look back on that today and honestly say that it was the best thing I have ever done for my health. I was at 2 packs a day when I quit. I sincerely hope you find something in your life that you feel that good about. I guess what I am saying here is, if you make up your mind to try something new don’t give up on it right away. It may turn out to be one of the best things you will ever try. Have a great month and I will see you again next time. Till then, keep smiling, it makes them wonder what you have been up to. The phrase is “I’ll never tell.”

Your Tennessee Country BoyChuck Webb

DON’T SELL YOURSELF SHORT

Hi everyone I want to take this time to let everyone know what’s happening with the paper and with me personally. As most of you know I’m recovering from a serious motorcycle

accident in January. I’m still recovering but it seems to be taking forever. Our best wishes go out to our very own Assistant Publisher Tamii Schrum. Tamii became sick a few months ago and has a serious fight on her hands. Keep an eye out on Dethkitn’s pages 8 and 9 and she will keep us all updated. We love ya Tamii. Now with our newspaper, we have decided to move in another direction, we will still be promoting pool and darts but we are looking at different ways in doing so. In the next few months it will be clear to everyone how we will do this. Let me give you a few hints as something we may do, and maybe you will have some suggestions for us. First, I have two friends getting into the pool tournament business at their homes, yes at their homes and 3 or more friends running dart tournaments at

their homes and they are all becoming successful, meaning they have between 12 and 25 players showing up. Another friend is doing Karaoke at his place and has about 20 to 30 people showing up. We now have poker rooms, Vapor lounges, and other clubs opening that are getting in on the actions of pool, darts and other entertainment. Also if you look around, on just about every corner there are empty places that are just dying to be leased out on short a term basis. Some wise person OR persons are going to start a tournament room for the above activities WITHOUT THE OVERHEAD. Think about it. When I look around at who is promoting our great sports of pool and darts I see changes being made. Our home players are getting more involved but have different ideas as to where they want to play. So now you have some idea of who else is trying to promote our games. I’ll keep you informed each month as to what’s happening and how you can get involved. Watch your kids and pets around water and please don’t leave them in your cars not even for a minute. Have a great month and play fair.Support your sports. Get out and play!

4 TABLE TALK JULY 2012

IT’S YUKIO!YUKIO AKAGARIYAMA WINS THE 2011 WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP WITH A

BRILLIANT 13-11 WIN OVER RONNIE ALCANO.

Story and Photo by Ted Lerner

(Doha, Qatar)—With a super cool demeanor and a red hot stroke, Yukio Akagariyama of Japan won the 2011 World 9-ball Championship, defeating the Philippines Ronnie Alcano in a tense and scintillating finals match on Friday night, 13-11.

Akagariyama won the title with a brilliant display of pressure packed 9-ball before a cheering partisan crowd of close to 1500 people, most of them Filipinos, at the Al Sadd Sports Club in Doha, Qatar.

The victory capped what has been a tremendous recent surge for the 36 year old. Back in May Akagariyama made it to the semi-finals of the World 10-ball Championship in Manila. Then in early June, he placed 5th at the China Open in Shanghai.

In Doha Akagariyama played solid and steady all week. But he also had moments when mistakes crept into his game, especially late in matches during the knockout stages, when the pressure became too much to bear. But always the 36 year old from Nagano quietly sucked it up, and got right back down to business and made it across the finish line. It’s exactly what happened on Friday night.

The match had just about everything fans of championship 9-ball could ask for. The lead and the momentum swung both ways on several occasions, and the outcome was in doubt right up until the last ball dropped; both players made jaw dropping shots and strung racks together while showing absolute

mastery of the table. Each player committed a handful of errors too, but under the weight of the moment this was to be expected, and in fact made the match an even more nerve jangling affair.

Alcano, who had just come off a definitive semi-finals win over compatriot Dennis Orcullo earlier, won the lag and immediately broke and ran for the first point of the match. Akagariyama, who advanced by beating England’s Mark Gray 11-10 in a thrilling semi final, tied it in the next rack after Alcano bobbled the 5-ball in the corner pocket.

In rack 3 Alcano fouled leaving Akagariyama a tempting 1-9 combination that rattled in the jaws of the pocket. With the 9 still sitting in the corner, Alcano sent the crowd into fits when he caromed off the one ball, and sent the cue down table, back up off of two rails and into the 9 which fell in for the win.

From there the pair stepped their games up a gear, as Akagariyama broke and ran, and then Alcano fired back with one of his own to go up 3-2. They split the next two racks with each converting one clutch pot after the next. At 4-4 the match was already shaping up to be a high quality battle of attrition.

Akagariyama grabbed his first lead in rack 9, and stamped his class on the match. Alcano left the 2 ball in the jaws, and the Japanese continued with his concise and steady shooting to move up by 1. In the next rack Alcano tried to jump but left the 2 ball open. Again, Akagariyama

coolly picked off the balls and now led 6-4.

Alcano got one back in the subsequent frame with a break and run. But Akagariyama countered yet again with one of his own to move up 7-5. The 36 year old from Nagano was clearly focused like a laser, while potting balls with deadly accuracy and a fine rhythm. He was going to be very tough to beat on this night.

It was more of the same for Akagariyama in the next rack as Alcano missed a makeable two ball and the Japanese methodically began to pick off the colors for what seemed like a sure 3 rack lead. But just as he was about to put a stranglehold on the momentum and the match, Akagariyam left himself poor position on the 9 ball and the cue ball scratched after the winning ball fell.

With the crowd cheering wildly, the scratch seemed to have the makings of a pivotal turning point but Akagariyama was obviously in the zone this night, and broke and ran the next frame with some sensational shooting. In the next rack he continued his measured assault, winning a safety battle then running the table after banking in the 1 ball to go up 9-6.

Alcano knew it was now or never and cleared off an errant safety to get one back. Alcano then executed a marvelous full table jump on the 1 with position of the 2, a shot that had the crowd going wild. With the run out he was now down by 1, 9-8 and the crowd started sensing the momentum swinging back to their boy. When Akagariyama missed a makeable 6 ball in the next rack, Alcano convinced them it was so, running the table to tie the match at 9.

Alcano continued his fine run in the next frame when he broke and confidently started potting the remaining balls. But suddenly he was stopped in his tracks when a full table 8 ball bobbled in the jaws. As the crowd gasped in horror, Akagariyama stopped the bleeding and regained the lead, 10-9.

Next Akagariyama made a gutsy full table pot on the 1, leaving perfect position on the 2 ball, and a path

to a 2 shot lead. But just when it appeared he had grabbed back the momentum, Alcano pulled the same extraordinary shot in the subsequent game and moved one down at 11-10. Alcano won a safety battle in the next rack, and then ran the balls to tie the match at 11-11.

The World 9-ball title was now a race to two and Alcano had the upper hand as he had won the lag and would be breaking for the hill. But with an open table, Alcano missed a very makeable 2 in the side pocket. The former two time world champion couldn’t believe what hit him and neither could the fans. Meanwhile, Akagariyama stepped in and executed some tough shots to make it to the hill.

With one rack to go for the world title, Akagariyama couldn’t have asked for a better break and opening layout. As he had all night, he calmly and methodically potted the balls and took the World 9-ball championship without any further drama.

Afterwards, the low key new champion attributed the biggest victory of his 20 year career to his consistent training regime which, he said, led to self belief that he could ride out the inevitable rough patches and win the big prize.

“I wouldn’t say I played perfect this week,” Akagariyama said through an interpreter. “I had some misses. But I had confidence. I’ve been playing well in the past few months. After the World 10-ball and the China Open I went back home and I trained hard, on my game and physical training. I had too much confidence.”

Alcano was left to rue what might have been. He knew he had come close to winning his third world title but realized that at this level, you can’t expect to cash the big ticket when you make elementary mistakes.

“I missed four easy shots,” a clearly dejected Alcano said afterwards. “How can I win if I miss four shots? Maybe it was the pressure.”

Akagariyama collected $36,000 for the victory, while Alcano received $18,000

Gotta go, I’ll keep y’all posted as things evolve. Thanks for reading!

Hello friends and readers…

You may notice that this month there is a lot less on my pages. Sorry about that…I’ve had a different kind of adventure this month. After being sick with stomach pain for over two weeks, I finally decided to go to the ER and see what was up. They did a CT scan and found a tumor in my abdomen and kept me for a week and a half, and yes, it is cancer, and it has spread to a few other places in my body.

I was so mad when I found out I had to miss Annefest, my favorite event of the year… (I know, I’ve got some messed up priorities, huh? Lol) so that just made matters worse. I was heartbroken.

Rather than tell everyone in person about what was going on, I opted to post it on my facebook page to keep all of my friends and family in the loop. I swear, I did not realize how many REAL friends I have out there! The responses were overwhelming the support blew me away! So I decided to use this space here to thank everyone who came to visit me, gave me moral support and still stands beside me in this. You guys are more awesome that words can express. A very special thank you to Michael Synnestvedt and all who helped him! Mikey actually brought a laptop to Club 910 and carried it around all evening at Annefest so I could be there! Friends chatted with me online while I was getting chemo in the hospital…and i got front row air conditioned seats for the whole event. What an amazing friend! Thank you Mikey and friends for making me feel so special! I love you dearly!

Danny DiLiberto (born February 19, 1935, Buffalo, New York) is an American professional pool player, nicknamed “Buffalo Dan”.

A veteran player from the Johnston City era, a teacher, an author, and today working as a commentator for Accu-Stats, DiLiberto is an active member of the pocket billiards community. He was elected into the One Pocket Hall of Fame in 2004 for his “outstanding contribution to the legacy of the game of one pocket”.

The 1981 BCA National Eight-Ball Championship was a memorable victory for DiLiberto when he faced Nick Varner in the finals. Running out the deciding match was most appropriate for DiLiberto in what was until then a neck-and-neck race to 7 for the win.

On October 20, 2011, Diliberto was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America’s Hall of Fame. The ceremony took place alongside the 36th annual US Open 9-Ball Championships.

Ralf Souquet (born 29 November 1968 in Eschweiler, Germany) is a German professional pool player. His nicknames are “The Kaiser” and “The Surgeon.” Since 1981, he has won more than 250 tournament titles, including 41 German Championship titles and 34 European Championship titles.

He began playing billiards at the age of six in his parents’ pub, practicing up to five hours per day. He won his first German Championship title at the age of fourteen in the juniors division. In 1996, Souquet won the WPA World Nine-ball Championship where triumph over Tom Storm of Sweden. He also reached the finals of the same event in 2001 and 2006, only to be bested by Mika Immonen and Ronato Alcano.

In 2008, Souquet won his second world title at the WPA World Eight-ball Championship with a victory over Ronato Alcano (Alcano was also a winner of this event). Souquet won the $ 60,000 championship prize, with 13-9 final score.

With the popularity of the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro, the import-makers are getting into the sports-coupe act with choices of their own. Hyundai has gone all out with the 2013 Genesis coupe, as we can see with its eye-c a t c h i n g s t y l i n g . It’s a real a t t e n t i o n getter on the street.

The base engine is a 2.0 liter turbo rated at 275 horsepower, but I had the real potent 3.8 liter V-6 cranking 348 horses, and hooked to an 8-speed (yes, eight!) automatic transmission, with manual override, and paddle shifters. And it moves, reaching 60 mph in about 6 seconds. I am sure we could have gotten a quicker time by driving harder, but Hyundai likes getting their cars back in one piece. Besides, this is a sporty machine, so we wanted to tackle some tight corners.

For high-s p e e d c o r n e r i n g , we got mixed results. The steering is heavy, with no

feel. Then again, it moves as directed -- good thing, as a skunk ran out in front of us during a quick mountain ride, and I missed it “by that much.” The brake feel seemed a bit soft, but the car stops quickly, with

no fade. With good weight d ist r ibut ion and wide t i r e s , handling was very tight, and will keep up with any Mustang or Camaro you

might encounter. The car does not hop when encountering rippled pavement, helping to keep it glued to the road. Overall, an excellent performer.

The interior was very good overall, but that tilt-steering wheel doesn’t rise much, and the glove- box room is about useless. The oil pressure gauge is useful, but the torque and “miles-per-gallon” gauges are pointless. The quality of materials and workmanship

was excellent. The base-price with a small turbo engine starts at $25,000 and gets 20/31 mpg. My V-6 coupe came standard with e ve r y t h i n g ,

so it was $32,875 and is rated at 18/28 mpg.

BRAVE MAN,A SOLDIER’S STORY

I am but a child, speaking of love, of peace. Being in harmony with all around me and yet you ask me to be a man. You ask me to go and fight a war I know nothing of, or no reason for. Brave man, I am told to serve my country, defend her freedoms and beliefs. But, whose freedom do I defend and who will defend me? I am but a boy.

Brave man, they say as I board the trains and busses and watch all I know click be with every turn of the wheel. My family, who defend me, friends who scream “traitor” and baby killer in anger. I am torn. I do not feel so brave.

Brave man, I am told by my leader as we go into a land as dark and sinister as any I have dreamed, yet as beautiful as can be seen. Where is this enemy I am sent to find. Who is this I am fighting and why?

Brave man, they say as I run to hold the hand of my best friend and watch as the holes in his body pour out life as surely as they pour blood. I do not feel brave. I feel only anger and sickness. As fire rains down we close in, bodies flying, unidentified and forgotten.

Shouts, unintelligible, lost in the rumble of gunfire and explosion, then a silence as thick as the jungle itself, a silence of the dead.

Brave man, they say as I step off the plane amidst the jeers of the ones who know not. Only my family there believing I have done the right thing. No one defends me. I have fought and now wish only peace. There is no peace. I relive daily the screams, the horror and deaths I helped to cause. There is no peace in the night, only nightmares.

Do not call me “Brave Man” for I am but a child, trapped forever in a world I never wished to see. I am a voice, but only one of many. Do you hear our cries?

Regrets, we have them. Would we go again? You better believe it, forever!

Just thoughts from the minds of those who have given so you can have the right to call them baby killer, friend, father, son, brother or “Brave Man”. You have this right because they chose to give up theirs for a while and bear the memories for the rest of their life.

IF YOU WANT TO DO ANYTHING, THANK THEM.

From a brave man to all who served and the ones who respect them.

THANK YOU!

Need a washer? Dryer? Refrigerator? Stove? How ‘bout a dishwasher? Well, don’t feel too bad, you’re not alone, a lot of us do; unfortunately. Would you also like service after the sale? Along

with those appliances delivered, installed, plugged in, and running without doing more than answer your door? For all this, and more you need to go to Louie’s appliance at 15012 N. Cave Creek Rd. Phoenix, Az. Just 2 blocks south of Greenway Parkway on the west side of the road. You will find all of this and lots more! These guys literally go the extra mile for their customers.

Family owned and operated, with over 30 years experience working at Louie’s. These guys know how to turn a wrench. Well, except Krystal, but she sure knows how to get the guys to turn them wrenches. If you have a broken

down appliance, then they can come out to your house, and check it out for you. Or bring it into the shop if need be, and return it of course. You’re in good hands with Brian, Chris, Louie, and Dave, and Doug’s there to make sure of this. Give

them a call, that’ll let you know if your old one is fixable or not. Don’t worry though, nothing leaves their showroom without Louie’s guarantee. Let me tell you, that’ll keep your lettuce crisp. Louie’s Appliance, 15012 N. Cave Creek Rd., and let Doug know you need your lettuce a little crisper. 602-765-0221.
