Special Note to Whitburn Collectors: This Spreadsheet does not reflect the Whitburn Information found in his books (specifically from 1960 onwards). Whitburn has changed the way he numbers the annual songs at least twice since this SS was created. The Only Data taken from it is the formulas in which he generates the Yearly Rankings. Many people have been working hard on verifying the information and have found many errors. Artists, Titles and Song Times have been affected the most. I do not deal with pre 1955, there are others that take care of this. They give me any corrections, then I incorporate it into the SS. You can still send corrections to me and I will pass them on to the appropriate people.

Notes from Previous Edition: 1999Many of us who collect charted singles find a spreadsheet or database format helpful to use in addition to books and charts. Most of us do, however, own the books and/or charts. If you do not own a copy of the new Whitburn Pop Hits Singles & Albums, or Top Pop Singles, we strongly encourage you to buy them. You can purchase it online from it's home page at www.recordresearch.com, or at bookstores like Amazon.com. While you can buy the older version from e-bay at times, the newer version has much more information, and is worth a few extra bucks. The new 2007 version of the Top Pop Singles and the new Annual changed the way Whitburn ranked songs. He is now including Airplay with the rankings. We will not be following his new rankings as we feel they have seperate charts and the purpose of this project was never to follow every chart.

We can't contribute to the Music Prof by buying his books, because AFAIK, he hasn't published any. And his rankings and 2,000+ tune music collection is freely available for the asking. Yet he has done as much as any other individual to make quality pre-1955 singles accessible for today's on-line music lovers. And he continues to help us, as new on-line users stumble through learning the same lessons over and over again. But, we can at least say, "Thanks," from time to time. Thanks, Bob!

One of the ways in which we can show our appreciation to those who have come before us, is to try to carry on in their tradition. Share your music that is needed and is of good quality, and do not post that which is not. Take the time to fill out as much information as you can in the ID Tags. Do the best job you can to make sure the information is accurate FOR EACH SONG. Listen to your music and make sure it sounds as good as it can before posting it for others. Help point the newbies in the right direction. And above all, be cheery and have fun!

"Explicit" column to help identify what versions of the song are available "e"xplicit and/or "c"lean - thanks to Dubie for suggesting and implimenting this idea. Please note in the filename of posted songs [explicit] for songs of that nature.

Actual Weekly Billboard Data for 2000-2003 Added Total Weeks on chart, Total Top 40, Total Top 10, "weeks at Peak Position" and Peak Position all tallied from the weekly data in ranges "AI" through "CP" SPECIAL THANKS TO "Wyl E Cyote" for his expert help in Excel formulas!

Times For ALL songs 55-02 thanks to "PcHelp"

Moved ", The" and ", A" 's to the beginning of Titles Only, Artists name are still the same (A and The after the Artist Name).Put all Artists 'following' a (With(/)) or (Featuring) to a "Featured" column. The reasoning behind this is to keep filenames to a minimum and put the featured information directly into ID3 tag.Additionally there is an UnFeatured Column for Artists commonly referenced with the song, but not on the actual Label.

Errata - These are lists of corrections made as they come in. Also added a "Key Tab" for Titles on main sheet.Added file "1940-1954 Charted Singles.xls" by RosieTime Lengths of songs (Thanks to WhoMe for the 55-70 list)UncleDave for his list of 1930-1944Added Yearly Song Positions to the list 1955-1999

Notes from Previous Edition: 1999

"Prefix" "99_###", used as an index number. The songs needed an identifying index number to simplify the updating process. It is also used in Xenolith's "WB Tagger & Renamer" to mass rename & tag entire catalogs of music.

Thanks go out to "UncleDave" - Pop Memories 1890-1954" This was (and still is) a HUGE project. The book is sorted alphabetically so it had to be completed before any Yearly Charts could be produced. It was then compaired to Pop Hits 1940-1954. The Yearly rankings in Pop Hits did not and could not change as they were written in stone by Whitburn, but the remaining songs from Pop Memories (during '40-'54) were added to the already existing Pop Hits lists (And are subject to change in the future).

"ChartedMusic1" - 1955-1999 Whitburn list.xls, Spreadsheet included Artist, Title, Year, and Top Charted position. From the Joel Whitburn book "Pop Annual 1999 Sixth Edition" This started the whole project.

NOTE: All songs listed in Spreadsheet are considered the [Clean] Versions played on the Radio. (No [Dirty/Explicit] Versions to be posted with the Prefix unless noted in filename!) Keep in mind that due to the DD [Digital Downloads] there are some that don't have a clean version - note it anyway in filename.

91_118, 92_032 & 92_298 - Rhythm Syndicate' s/b 'Rythm Syndicate' (notice spelling)

Time shows 3:58, this is incorrect, charted version was Album, which runs at 4:33.Single time is 4:04 not 4:45 that WB has. No idea where he got it

Whitburn shows 3:31, however charted version is Album cut. Clean is 5:34, Explicit is 5:59

NOTE: These are not typos: matchbox twenty, BLACKstreet, StainD, 5th Dimension

BB says 'Soundtrack Cut' there are 2 versions, Clean and Explicit, Clean is 4:08, Explicit is 4:23 since we assume clean versions, time was changed to 4:08 to reflect this

I found several errors in your spreadsheet, how can I fix them?

All Years are numbered Most Popular to Least, What's Up with the current years Data?

You have David Whitfield - Santo Natale as both 1954_128 and as 1955X001 the renamer picks up on the 1955X001 and so if you use that prefix you are left with a hole for 1954_128Aames Brothers - Naughty Lady Of Shady Lane -- is in SS as both 1954_019 and also 1955_023

I can't see all of the data in your spreadsheet, even after I move the lower-right bar back and forth.

Just what are all those numbers to the right of the spreadsheet (Weeks 1 thru 75)?

How are songs ranked each year?

Yes, All Years are sorted by "Most Weeks At #1" then "Most at #2" and so on. Current year is sorted chronologically, in the order of "Highest Position of Week" to "Lowest". Notice the "-" in the Prefix instead of the "_" , The " - " is used for temporary numbers. Current year will be renumbered somewhere around April-May of next year when the last of this years songs fall off chart.

This is a rarity caused by the book cut off dates, whitburn has this song listed in both Pop Memories and Pop Hits, and, although it is probably the same chart history. This will eventually be changed as we move away from Whitburn.

Place Mouse Pointer on the line separating the letters on the top of the spreadsheet. For Example if we want to hide the "Artist Inverted" column, Place the mouse pointer on the line directly to the right of "L" until you see the pointer change. Hold down the mouse button and move it to the left as far as it will go.

Some people prefer a complete list for Inverted Artist, Copy and paste the Entire Inverted column on top of the "Artist" column, but use Edit -> "Paste Special" and choose "Values" and "Skip Blanks" when pasting.

1. Open up the Spreadsheet so that the song lists are viewed ""Click the ""Pop"" Tab on bottom left, 2. Make sure ""ALL"" columns are visable...i.e. column ""A"" column ""B"" column ""C"" etc.3. Hit select all (Do this by clicking the empty grey square before the ""A"" column and the ""1"" Row - you will see everything highlight itself, 4. Copy <Ctrl-C>, 5. Open a blank txt document with ""Notepad"", Make sure wordwrap is turned off, and paste <Ctrl-V>. Click ""format"" and ensure that there is no check next to ""WordWrap"")6. Save the new text file to a directory you can remember. Open ""Tagger & Renamer.exe"" and point to that new text file.

These are the Weekly Chart Positions for each song listed in the spreadsheet. The first week, you may notice a number - this number is the position on the chart during the 1st week on chart. The date is entered in the "Date Entered" column. The 2nd week is a week later, Third...etc. If you notice blank cells between numbers, that means the song fell off the chart for that amount of time.
