In addition to founding and running a successful high-tech telecom management firm for 28 years, he holds magna cum laude degrees in piano performance and creative writing, and has concertized and performed for many years with a focus on bringing music to audiences in non-traditional ways. His recording of “Amazing Grace” topped the mp3.com charts in July of 2000, and was included in the Library of Congress permanent collection in 2016. In addition to two all-original CDs, he has performed and worked with opera stars, poets, Dixieland, jazz, rock and pop tribute bands, in musical theatre, and as a solo concert pianist and entertainer. On Memorial Day weekend 2007, Protzmann premiered a new version of his one-man show, “Connected!,” with a focus on using music as a self-intervention tool for issues related to military service. In 2011, he launched Music Care Inc, a for-profit corporation dedicated to providing education in music as adjunct treatment for post-traumatic stress, depression and anxiety. In addition to its concert format, “Connected!” is also offered as a keynote address, a daylong seminar and a 30-minute short-format teaser. Since 2007, “Connected!” has entertained many civic organizations and NGOs in San Diego County with a practical message of music as self care. Other representative clients include: 2016 Western Region Music Therapy Association keynote in Boise, Idaho; 2014 Seventh Annual Financial Literacy Leadership conference in Alexandria, Virginia; 2013 Consumer Action Conference in Chicago, Illinois; San Diego VA Healthcare System and SHARP Hospital Wellness Center; VA Chaplaincy couples program “From Warrior to Soulmate;” Episcopal Community Services of California’s “Friend to Friend” clubhouse (weekly since 2010); 2-1-1 San Diego employee in-service enrichment program. In 2015, Mr. Protzmann received an Award of Excellence from the National Council for Behavioral Healthcare for his work in advancing music as self care. Since 2010, Mr. Protzmann has volunteered as a Partner in the San Diego Veterans Coalition, and, from 2011 until 2015, was as a volunteer Director and San Diego Area Facilitator of Guitars for Vets, a nationwide non-profit corporation that provides guitars and instruction to Veterans for relief from post-traumatic stress. He is an Associate member of the American Music Therapy Association and a member of the Healing Music Organization. When he talks about music and self care, he speaks with gentle conviction and from real experience. "Listening to Bill Protzmann pulls all of the positive things about living into place. He is a master at his ability to relate his music to recovery for everyone. His music and his words of wisdom touch and teach at the same time that recovery is truly a gift, just like his music."
