THE COPPER CORNER

April-June 2004 “Something for Everyone” 18th Century “CONDER” TOKENS-------17TH Century tokens—19th Century tokens

Medals, medalets, unusual historical items----

LIST 36

Dalton & Hamer’s “Provincial Token Coinage of the 18th Century”. New 2004 edition, with separate supplement, $185.

Hi Friends--- another three months, and time for another list. Seems like yesterday to me, but from the calls I get the lists must be far apart!! Headed to the ANA in Portland, where quite a few of my friends were happily met, and it was a good show. It did make me a bit late getting this list out, but, hopefully, you will find it worth the wait.

Provincial tokens (Conders) have been interesting to watch on the world scene lately. The British have rediscovered the series, and I am selling a fairly large number of tokens to customers there. It does give me a bit of a chuckle to have three separate customers in North Wales and on the Isle of Anglesey who buy Druid tokens from me, as that is where the series started. I feel like I am sending “coals to Newcastle” in a way.

Lists from England show prices much stronger than they are in the USA, and the pound is so strong versus the dollar that it is nearly impossible to buy for stock unless one is willing to stretch--- sometimes quite a lot. A bit of a payback for the years of the soft pound and the high dollar, and we just have to accept it. This list contains some surprises, and lots of new pieces. Thanks for your friendship, and have fun looking-----Bill

17 th CENTURY FARTHINGS AND HALFPENNY TOKENS PAGE SEVEN These tokens were struck out of necessity for change. They are quite crude, but served the need at the time. Most are quite rare, as they circulated in very small areas—many times only being accepted over a few blocks in the town---and most were struck in very small quantities. As well, when the King’s edict banning them was published, most were melted. They are listed by Williamson numbers, from his book on 17 th century tokens. Most of these tokens are scarce to rare---if listed as “unpriced”---they are REALLY rare----All listed are farthings unless described otherwise. 19 th CENTURY PENNY & HALFPENNY TOKENS These interesting tokens were not saved by collectors at the time they were issued like their 18th century counterparts. Very high grade pieces are thus all quite scarce. As well, many that were in circulation received edge dings and other scrapes, due to their large size. Issued primarily by large industry, they are a reminder of how industry coped with a lack of change as the industrial revolution gained momentum. Listed by Withers numbers, from his new book on 19th Century coinage, and by Davis numbers. Withers new book, with wonderful history of the times and the tokens, is available at $135. W51. D-40.
