At United Bicycle Institute, learning bicycle mechanics is fun —

serious fun — and every UBI instructor understands that when

learning is fun, it’s effective! While ensuring every student’s

enjoyment, we also pay close attention to safety, reliability,

efficiency, and industry standards.

Each member of our team draws upon a wide array of industry experience to offer aunique perspective on our course materials — whether it’s operating a busy servicedepartment, working the trenches of the World Cup race circuit, or helping develop innovative new equipment with some of the bike industry’s premiere brands.

Each UBI lesson builds an understanding of how each system on a bicycle works beforedemonstrating how to service it. This combination of experiencing why and how, along with significant hands-on learning time, allows students to hone their problemsolving skills and become well-rounded mechanics.

You can’t miss the infectious enthusiasm that flows throughout UBI’s campuses — It’sthat energy that helps us connect with a wide variety of students and learning styles, and consistently earns rave reviews from graduates.

School FacilitiesUBI classes are offered at two state-of-the-artOregon campuses: our headquarters in Ashland,a beautiful town in southern Oregon, and anurban facility in Portland, the state’s largest city.

The Ashland facility features a 2000 square footmechanics classroom and a 1200 square footframe building shop, and provides quick access to world-class mountain bike trails and scenic road rides.

In Portland, students enjoy a 3000 square foot mechanics classroom, with a separate2400 square foot facility dedicated to frame building classes, located in the heart ofPortland — one of the country’s most unique urban cycling cultures.

Whichever campus you choose, we’ll provide a hands-on manual to take home as well as the use of a professional tool kit for classwork and after-hours projects. Bothframe shops feature top-notch professional machine tools, TIG welders, torches and the best frame jigs in the industry. The Ashland and Portland campuses share the same polished curricula.

UBI is licensed by the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission as a privatecareer school and is also approved for most VA-funded occupational education oppor-tunities. Additionally, UBI is approved by the US Department of Homeland Security to issue student visas for our foreign guests.

ReferencesIf you would like to contact any of our former students to ask their opinionsof UBI and our courses, we’ll be happy to supply you with a list of graduates.

About Ashland, OregonRanked as one of the top 10 small towns in Americaby Fodor’s in 2014, Ashland is nestled in the scenicCascade and Siskiyou mountains of southern Oregon. Ashland is one of the top mountain bike destinations in the country justminutes from UBI-Ashland’s front door. The Rogue Valley provides miles of scenic, peaceful road riding with plenty of varied terrain and light vehicle traffic.Additionally, the 18-mile Bear Creek Greenway makes exploring by bike a fun and safe experience for all ages and abilities.

Home to the world famous Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashland’s historic down-town looks much like it did at the turn of the 20th century, featuring quaint shops, craft brew pubs, cafés, boutiques, art galleries, and dozens of restaurants, all within a 5 minute bike ride of UBI. Ashland is also home to the historic Lithia Park, listed byTripAdvisor as a top 25 US park. Families will enjoy a hands-on children’s museumand a lake with waterslides. Those looking to explore the rest of the Rogue Valley will find over 50 wineries within a short drive, as well as an internationally acclaimedcreamery famous for its blue cheese.

Some students also choose Ashland as their outdoor adventure basecamp. Mt. Ash-land features a seasonal ski resort, and the nearby Wild and Scenic Rogue River pro-vides world-class rafting, hiking, fishing, and jet boat trips, as well as a great place torelax. With Crater Lake and Redwood national parks, Mt. Shasta, the Pacific Crest Trail, and the stunning Oregon coast just a short drive away, it’s hard to pass up this once-in-a-lifetime access to some of North America’s most unique outdoor adventures.

About Portland, OregonOften rated as the #1 cycling city in America, Portland offers students as muchmythology as it does geographic and social opportunities. With over ten times thenational average of people commuting daily by bike, it’s quickly evident that Port-land is an urban oasis for cyclists. The city is crisscrossed with bike lanes and sharedroadways, and is home to over 100 bike shops, dozens of custom frame builders, several major bike industry manufacturers, and a unique, trendsetting cycling culture.

But Portland is so much more. Foodies love Portland for its diverse and reasonably-priced quality restaurants and food carts, as well as the rich micro-brew culture. No

matter your taste or budget, there is always something around the corner. Most UBIstudents attending class at the Portland campus prefer to remain in the city duringtheir stay, to experience the countless music venues, museums, galleries, an amazingzoo, parks, and shopping — all within cycling distance, and also easily accessed usingPortland’s extensive public transit infrastructure.

Those adventurous enough to venture out of the city during their downtime can easilyaccess the Oregon coast and the Cascade Mountains, each just over an hour’s drive away. With year-round access to Mt. Hood, epic mountain biking at Mt. St. Helens and SandyRidge, hiking in the Columbia Gorge, and touring northern Oregon’s countless wineries,Portland is close enough to nature for day trips with all the convenience of city life.

The PerksFor each class completed, UBI students qualify for a discounted order with our Ashlandneighbor, United Bicycle Supply. This one-time opportunity gives students up to ayear to compile a tool and repair parts order at near wholesale pricing.

While attending class, students also have an opportunity to place a one-time order fromone of our wholesale distributors at a substantial discount. Many take this opportunityto replace or upgrade parts during our optional evening shop sessions. Additionally, UBI has agreements with a number of industry partners that provide students with anopportunity to purchase products at a substantial discount while attending UBI.

UBI Mechanic CertificationUBI is the bike industry’s most respected traininginstitute. In fact, there are more UBI graduatesworking in the cycling industry than from anyother national mechanics school. We’re proud ofthis record, and continue to expand and evolveour curriculum to reflect the industry’s ever-changing technological landscape.

Our two types of certification programs are recognized and respected by profession-als at all levels of the bicycle industry.

Certificate of CompletionWe award a Certificate of Completion to all students who attend every class sessionand successfully complete all required coursework. This certificate is available forevery class we offer.

Certified Bicycle Technician ProgramFor those seeking employment in the bicycle industry, or for experienced mechanicswanting advanced certification, we offer the Certified Bicycle Technician program. This certificate verifies that the student has demonstrated their proficiency in a specific discipline by passing a rigorous testing procedure, and surpassing industry-recognized standards.

The Certified Technician Program is offered for our Professional Repair and Shop Operation class and both of the Advanced Mechanics Seminars. Attending studentsare not obliged to take the certification exam, but it is the only way to attain a certifi-cation from UBI. Students who take the certification exam as part of their class may re-take the examination should they not pass the first time.|

Frame Building and Welding ClassesUnited Bicycle Institute’s frame building school offers students the opportunity to learn the craft in a classroom setting from some of the finest frame builders in the country.

UBI first began offering frame building classes in 1991, and since that time over3000 students have graduated from our frame courses. Many alumni have goneon to successfully launch their own frame building businesses, while others simply enjoy riding their new custom built frames recreationally.

Our curriculum, which has evolved over 3 decades through the experience ofsome of the world’s highest-caliber builders, allows even beginners to design andbuild a custom steel or titanium frame in just two weeks. At UBI, you won’t justwatch someone else build your frame – you’ll do all the work yourself under thetutelage of our expert instructors with top-level tools and fixtures. UBI’s frameclasses are capped at eight students each, ensuring each student receives theindividual attention and expertise necessary to build a high quality custom frame.

When you sign up for a frame building course at UBI, you will benefit fromlearning in a fully equipped classroom environment with your own work station, a highly evolved curriculum, and faculty with decades of frame building andinstructional experience.

Brazed Steel Frame Building 10 days

With the recent resurgence in handcrafted bicycles, it’s no surprise that our most popular frame class is theBrazed Steel course. This class is ideal for avid cyclists, shop mechanics and managers, and aspiring profes-sional frame builders. Students can choose lugged or fillet brazed frame construction, as both techniques are covered in class.

Frame building is a craft that requires focus and dedica-tion. While the process challenges students, even thosewith basic mechanical aptitude and no previous build-

ing experience finish class with a frame they’re proud of. Generally, every step ofthe frame’s construction is executed by the student with their newfound skills. We always have expert instructors close by if additional assistance is required.

Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality custom steel bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welded Steel Frame Building 10 days

Our TIG Welded Steel Frame Building class offers the same instruction in frame designand construction as our Brazed Steel class, butuses TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding as thejoining method. Specially designed practicewelding sessions early in the course preparestudents to TIG weld a quality steel frame.

TIG welding skills can be somewhat more difficult to acquire than brazing, so we recom-mend that students interested in this coursepossess above-average mechanical skill andhand-eye coordination. Good close-up visionis also important, especially in the high-contrast light conditions characteristic of the TIG welding process.

Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality custom steel bicycle frame ready for painting and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welded Titanium Frame Building 10 days

Our TIG Welding Titanium Frame Building class offers all that the TIG (TungstenInert Gas) welded steel class encompasses, but uses titanium instead of steel as a frame material. Special emphasis is placed on proper cleaning and purging of titanium tubes, titanium machining problems and solutions, as well as proper titanium welding techniques.

Professional Career Development Seminars 1 to 3 days

UBI offers Professional Career Development Seminars as continuing education forindustry professionals who want to add to their skills or seek training in emergingtechnologies. Students who have completed UBI’s Professional Repair and ShopOperation class are also welcome to enroll. Current offerings include a disc brakeseminar, a seminar on servicing Chris King components, and the Fox Master TechClinic, which trains mechanics in the latest Fox suspension technology. Check ourwebsite at www.bikeschool.com for topics, schedules, and locations.

Specially-designed practice welding sessions early in the course prepare the student to weld their own titanium frame. As with our steel TIG frame class, good close-up vision is important, especially in high-contrast light conditions.

Students who successfully complete this class will leave with a high quality custom titanium bicycle frame and a Certificate of Completion.

TIG Welding Seminar 2 days

The TIG Welding Seminar introduces TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding to pros-pective frame builders, or builders with only brazing experience. This weekendclass is typically scheduled following a Steel Brazing Frame Building class to allowstudents to experience both types of joining. Though not required, students canbenefit from this seminar in preparation for TIG welding frame building classes.

The seminar provides a detailed look at equipment selection and use, with emphasis on producing strong, aesthetically-pleasing weld beads. As with all UBI classes, plenty of hands-on practice is combined with lectures and demon-strations to give students an appreciation for accurate tube mitering and bestpractices for joining bicycle tubes.

Students who successfully complete the seminar will receive a Certificate of Completion.
