IT’S great to watch a motorcycle developfrom inception to production, and it feelslike it’s taken a while with KTM’s latestoffering. The new 1290 Super Duke Rhas been the source of much press

speculation, with even the prototype gainingthe nickname ‘the Beast’.

With a 1.3 litre engine and 180bhp on tap, it’sa mouth-watering prospect to say the least. Infact Fowlers of Bristol have already securedseveral orders based on rumour alone.

Whether it’s a supermoto that’s grown roadmanners, or a road bike that’s adopted thetrappings of the supermoto, the 1290 SuperDuke R is a leap of faith that further es-tablishes KTM in the world of bigger capacityroad bikes. It’s been given a brand new 75-de-gree V-twin engine that was developed from amerger of the RC8R and the 1190 units and nowsports larger pistons and a longer stroke.

The actual capacity is 1301cc and not 1290cc

Ve rd i c tThe KTM 1290 Super Duke R defies rational

explanation. It fits in no particular box but whenit comes to offering hedonistic enjoyment, therea re n’t too many bikes on the road that can touchit. Individual and never boring, the new 1290Super Duke R can’t fail to raise a smile.

as its name would suggest. The result is amonstrously powerful engine that without aneffective engine management system wouldbe completely uncontrollable even in thehands of a seasoned rider.

What does it cost? The latest Super Duke R isn’t cheap at a

shade over £14,000 but the detailing on thebike is excellent. The new Brembo brakes, the1190 Adventure dash with digital speedo-meter and analogue tacho, the beautifullyintegrated exhaust and tail light assembly allhint at a hefty development budget.

The 1290 Super Duke R is certainly dis-tinctive and will stand out on the roadsaround Bristol whatever company you keep.

How does it handle?Despite the huge power output and massive

wave of torque, the 1290 Super Duke R is not asmuch of a handful as you might expect. It isof course ludicrously fast, but the clever, unobtrusive engine management and ride-by-wire systems ensure both wheels can stay

rooted to the ground most of the time. For a V-twin, the new engine is pretty

smooth throughout its rev range while thesofter springs make for an unexpectedlysmooth ride. The steering geometry is alsosofter than previous Super Dukes and a brandnew Bosch traction control system helps tokeep it on the straight and narrow. For ahugely powerful bike, the Super Duke R isremarkably rideable.

M oto G PMarquez celebrateshistoric title victoryMARC Marquez became the youngest everrider to win the MotoGP world title afterriding a controlled race tothird place at the seasonfinale in Valencia.

The 20-year-oldSpaniard needed onlyto finish fourth orhigher to be sure ofbeating Yamaha’sJorge Lorenzo to thecrown, and did all thatwas required of himwith a performance thatyet again belied his tenderye a r s.

Marque z’s achievement sees him becomethe series’ youngest champion, breaking therecord of Freddie Spencer who was 21 yearsand 258 days old when he won the 500cc title in1983.

Marquez is also the first rookie to win thepremier class title since Kenny Roberts in1978.

The Honda rider’s title triumph was justreward for his stunning consistency acrosshis debut season, with his podium finish lastSunday his 16th in 18 races – of which six ofthose were victories.

Lorenzo, the only man who could denyMarquez his moment of history, won the racebut that was not enough for the outgoingchampion to overcome the 13-point advantagehis rival enjoyed at the start of the day.

IT may have been an incredibleyear for new boy Marc Marquezin the MotoGP, but it’s alsobeen a cracking season for locallad Luke Hedger who has won

the 2013 Pirelli National 600 Super-stock Championship in his rookieye a r.

It caps a memorable start to theYate-based 17-year-old’s career, whichlast year saw him take the 2012 Brit-ish Motostar series – and it’s partlythanks to a Weston bike dealership.

Tim Morse, of Morses Motorcycles,on Herluin Way, has been a familyfriend for many years and, as well assupplying Luke with tyres in the past, now provides him with top-of-the-range Shoei helmets and Sidi boots.

Tim said: “I’ve followed Luke on thepath to success for several years now.

“Local sponsorship is important tohelp young riders meet the high costsof taking part in racing champion-ships, and I’m delighted to be able tohelp out for the 2014 season as well.

“I’m really looking forward to trav-elling to Assen next year to see himride as he moves up to Supersport.”

Luke won this year’s championshipby 16 points in his debut season from

Jordan Simpkin and Callan Cooper.Riding for Gearlink Kawasaki, he

said: “I’m absolutely over the moonwith the Championship win, to moveup to the Superstock 600 class thisyear from the Motostar class was abig jump and it took me a while toadjust to the new riding style to suitthe 600.

“I couldn’t have done this withoutthe help and support this year. Thankyou so much to everyone who hashelped me this season, my personalsponsors, my team, my girlfriend andespecially my mum and dad.” Call Morses Motorcycles on 01934621187 for more on their range.
