June? Where did April and May go? It never ceases to amaze me just how quickly the end of another school year
approaches. Please be sure to have a look at our upcoming events (page 2), as ‘time flies when you are having fun’ and
we don’t want you to miss out on a thing!
Bike to School Week was a huge success! Thanks to Mrs. Freeman and her
Grade Three students, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of
students participating in the event! Sponsored by the Region of Peel, this
annual event helps to motivate and increase the number of students taking
active transport to school! We have so many students participating that we
don’t even have enough bike racks! Thanks to the Peel Region, we were
selected to receive an additional two new racks! These will be installed over
the summer following the field work that is taking place.
At this time of year we also like to extend warm wishes and say goodbye to
our Graduating class of students! This year’s cohort is small, but simply
amazing! We are really going to miss these wonderful leaders. We are
however, very excited for all of our graduates and look forward to honouring
them at the Graduation Ceremony on Wednesday, June 28th at 1:30 pm. We
would also like to extend well wishes to some of our K-5 students and their
families as they transition to new schools for September. We will miss you
all and would like to warmly extend our thanks for all that you have
contributed to the Kenollie community. Through your participation,
volunteering, many fundraising activities and efforts you have had a
significant impact on Kenollie and our school and community has truly benefitted. We wish you all continued success!
For our final well wishes, we would like to draw your attention to page 3 of the newsletter where we wish some of our
staff members a fond farewell: Mrs. Arnold, Ms Morris, and Ms Harte, who will be moving on to new schools for
September, and to Mrs. Giannone and Ms Hamilton who will be welcoming new family members over the summer
months! We wish all of you great success as you move into these new roles and want to thank you for all that you have
done to make a difference here at Kenollie Public School.
As always, at this time of the year I like to draw special attention and thanks to the very generous Kenollie Community!
In addition to the amazing funds raised to support our school (please see page 3 for a list of all of the amazing supports
provided through School Council funds!), our families have come together this year to support The Children’s Wish
Foundation, The World Wild Life Fund, Save our Scruffs, The Peel Regional Police—Special Olympics Adopt-An-
Athlete program, The Terry Fox Foundation and we are currently raising funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation
through participation in Jump Rope for Heart! Each year our community gives to others and this year was no
exception. By setting the example, our school community is instilling life long values and character traits that teach our
students to help others and give back! Thanks to each of you for all that you do to help us to meet the needs of others!
Only a few more sleeps until we come together for another great community event! This year’s Dad’s BBQ is shaping
up to be a great one and I simply can’t wait for the burger contest! Can you imagine designing your own burger for the
Port Credit Burger’s Priest location!!! Good luck to all of our student competitors; I can’t wait to taste your creations!
Community events like this, where we all come together to support one another are what make Kenollie a truly
wonderful place to work and learn! This is such an amazing school because of all of you, our students, staff, families
and community members make this school the “Best it Can Be!” I wish you all a safe and happy summer, I can’t wait
to come back to Kenollie in September when we can do it all over again!
Sincerely,
Jennifer El Refaie, Proud Principal of Kenollie Public School
We’re looking forward to seeing everyone out at this
year’s BBQ, the 35th year of this Kenollie
community tradition.
Thank you in advance to this year’s organizing team
and all the other parents supporting this wonderful
event!

Our Graduation Ceremony will be held on

We look forward to celebrating the accomplishments
of our wonderful graduates! Special thanks to the many Grade
4 and 5 parents involved in orchestrating this year’s event!
Save the date! Calling all volunteers!

worked so diligently on behalf of the Kenollie parent community.
Their service is sincerely appreciated. A special thanks to members
who have completed their terms: Co-Chairs, Shaylene Finch and
Laura Halbert, Treasurer, Maya Corbic and Secretary, Suzanne
Dicerni, for their hard work and selfless dedication to their roles on
School Council this past year. They have given a lot of time and
energy and will be greatly missed. It has been a pleasure working
alongside this amazing team of parents!
School Council executive positions are elected annually and
nomination forms and more information will be sent home in early
September.

Thank you once again for everything you do to
help Kenollie students thrive!
As always with this time of the year, I would like to take
some time to wish those leaving Kenollie a fond farewell. It
has been an incredible year, and we wish you all of the very
best!
Firstly, I am pleased to announce that Mrs. Arnold has had
her baby, please welcome George Patrick Arnold! As some
of you may have heard, Mrs. Arnold will unfortunately not be
returning to Kenollie following her Maternity leave. Instead, Mrs.
Arnold will be starting at Brian W. Fleming PS as a teacher in one of
their FDK classrooms! We are so sad to see Mrs. Arnold leave our
school, as she has been a very flexible teacher. During her time here
with us, she has taught Grade 5/6, Grade 6 and Core French/PE
(taking over this last role following our Fall Re-organization). Mrs.
Arnold will be remembered for her commitment to her students and
colleagues and for all of the extra things she ran (intramurals and
clubs!). She has been a key member of our staff and is always
demonstrating an eagerness to learn!
Our second goodbye is for Ms Morris. It’s hard to believe that she
only started with us two years ago and we are already saying
goodbye! You have worked so hard with all of your students over the
past two years and have supported their growth and development. We
will miss all of the support you gave to our Running Club,
Mississauga Marathon Student Relay Team and Track and Field Team
too. Thanks for helping students by supervising and coaching! I
know they learned a lot about nutrition and your passion for all things
running and running shoes! Ms Morris will be joining the teaching
team at Conestoga PS starting in the Fall of 2017. We wish her all of
the best as she makes this transition and returns to working within an
FDK classroom. Best wishes from everyone here at Kenollie PS!
Our third good-bye for this school year is Ms Harte. Ms. Harte has
only been with us since February last year (2016) however, she has
certainly left her mark! She is going to be greatly missed for all of her
flexibility and support! Although Ms Harte works mainly in the
Grade 1/2 classroom alongside Ms Stoyanova, I know that she has
impacted many students as she helps them to solve recess problems
and her friendly smile has allowed her to develop special relationships
with staff , students and parents! I will miss all of her assistance in
the office, especially in the afternoons! Ms Harte will start her new
role supporting students and staff at Greenbriar Senior Elementary
school!
We are also saying a brief/temporary good-bye to
Mrs. Giannone and Ms Hamilton who will both
be welcoming new babies into their families! We
wish them all of the best and can’t wait to hear all
about the new arrivals! Please be sure to come and
visit us next year, we would love to see you and
meet the new little ones!
Scorch has been travelling! Thank you for sending us your
pics! When travelling, please remember to take along your
Scorch t-shirt and photograph your children wearing them
some place really neat! Send your pic-
tures to Mrs. Morrison to have them
featured in our next newsletter!

Religious accommodation available to all faiths,
reflects board commitment to inclusion
All Ontario school boards are legally required to offer religious accommodation (as per the Ontario Human Rights Code) and have a
religious accommodation procedure in place (as per the Ministry of Education’s 2009 Provincial Equity and Inclusive Education
strategy). While the Peel District School Board has been providing religious accommodation to its students and staff for over 15
years, the board has revised its formal Religious Accommodation Operating Procedure, which has been in place since 2012.
The Peel board recognizes and values the religious diversity within its community and is committed to providing a safe, respectful
and equitable environment for all, free from all forms of discriminatory or harassing behaviour, including those based on religion.
Who can make a religious accommodation request? Parents of Peel students or staff of any faith background can make a religious accommodation request.
How can a student or staff member make a religious accommodation request? Parents of Peel students or staff should contact their school principal or site supervisor in early September (or as early in the school
year as possible) to submit a religious accommodation request.
What religious accommodation can be requested? For many students and staff in Peel schools, there are a number of areas where the practice of their religion that may result in a re-quest for accommodation:

On the road again—how to keep your cyclist safe
Here are some tips you can review with your child to ensure bike season gets off to a great start:
The right fit
children should be able to straddle the bike with both feet on the ground
a bike that is too big or too small can be a safety hazard
the helmet should fit — if it’s too loose, it could fall off, if it’s too tight, it’s uncomfortable
Get noticed
a young child's bike should be equipped with a bell and reflector
older riders should have a light and/or reflectors
Follow the rules
no riding on busy streets
no riding at night
stop for all STOP signs
Actions that cause injuries
driveway ride out—not stopping and looking both ways before entering the street
running the stop sign
turning without warning
cycling in the dark
following the leader—one child goes through a stop sign or misses a parked car but the second cyclist doesn’t
Three steps to quality summer child care for your child If you have a school-age child, finding summer child care can be a real challenge. But you can follow these three simple steps to
help you choose a program that’s best for your family. It will mean a summer full of fun and learning for your child—and peace of
mind for you.
Step 1 Call Child Care Info Peel
905-890-9432 or 1-888-836-5550
Child care experts provide specific information about summer camps and other child care providers in your neighbourhood. They
can answer your questions and give you information to help you choose the program that’s right for your family.
It’s a good idea to call the info line early to give yourself enough time to investigate potential programs and make your decision
before the program fills up.
Step 2 Schedule an appointment to meet with the program director or to speak over the phone, so that you can get more information about
the program. If possible, visit the program or the facility in which it will be held. The more information you have, the better you will
be able to decide if this program is a good "fit" for your child and your family.
Step 3 When you are checking out summer programs, don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions—it’s the best way to make sure you have all
the information you need. In general, you will want to ask questions about the program, staff, health and safety practices, food
provided, and costs.
For more information, call Child Care Info Peel or visit www.cdrcp.com/ccip.html.
Summer activities that boost learning Kindergarten to grade 4 Sorting and stacking – Teach classification skills with dinnerware. Ask your child to match and stack dishes of similar sizes and
shapes. Also have your child sort flatware – forks with forks, spoons with spoons. This is like recognizing the shapes of letters and
numbers.
Comic strip writing – Use comic strips to help with writing. Cut the segments of a comic strip apart and ask your child to arrange
them in order. Then ask your child to fill in the words of the characters (orally or in writing).
Float and sink – Encourage hypothesizing (guessing). Use several objects – soap, a dry sock, a bottle of shampoo, a wet sponge, an
empty bottle. Ask your child which objects will float when dropped into water in a sink or bathtub. Then drop the objects in the wa-
ter, one by one, to see what happens.
Grades 5 to 8 Follow the news – As a family, choose an important news event to follow for a day or two. Ask each person to find as much infor-
mation on the topic as possible – read newspapers, listen to the radio and watch TV news. Then talk about what everyone learned.
Pro and con: what do you think? – Make a family game of discussing a special issue. For example, "Teenagers should be allowed
to vote," or "There should never be any homework." Ask your children to think of all the reasons they can to support their views.
Then ask them to think of reasons opposing their views. Which views are most convincing? For variety, assign family members to
teams and have them prepare their arguments pro and con.
Stretch, run, walk – Ask your child to do at least one kind of exercise every day. For example, run or walk briskly for 10 minutes.
Walk, when possible, instead of driving, for any distance less than a mile. Have your child make a week-long exercise plan. Try to
think of a modest reward for sticking to the plan and exercise with your child.
Let your voice be heard – Promote good citizenship. Help your child write a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about an
issue affecting children – for example, suggest that a bike path be built near the school or that a city event be planned for youngsters.
Children are citizens, and their ideas are worth hearing.
The safety of our students is our top priority
Throughout the school year, incidents in our school communities happen. Our staff take precautions to emphasize street-
proofing skills with your child. However, we feel that it is important that you take an opportunity to review safety proce-
dures with your child.
Peel Police have provided the following safety guidelines if your child encounters a stranger: Tell your children to never go anywhere with a stranger, not to talk to strangers and never take anything from them. You also
have to teach them what a "safe stranger" is in case they need help. A safe stranger includes a police officer, a cashier, a fire
fighter, etc.
Remind your child to never walk alone—always walk with a group.
Develop a "what if" game for the kids to get them thinking of how they would respond if they felt threatened or afraid.
Know who your children play with and where they go. This includes keeping a list of their friend's addresses and phone num-
bers.
Remind your children not to take short cuts through parks, ravines, or other secluded areas.
Your child's body is private. Tell your child that no one may touch the area their bathing suit covers. If someone does or tries to
touch them, they should advise you immediately.
Teach your children to talk to you immediately when someone does anything that makes them feel strange or uncomfortable.
Listen when your children are trying to tell you about something that bothers them and provide them with support and under-
standing.
Tips for riding the bus: Take a seat as quickly as possible, put belongings under the seat and stay seated.
Never stick anything out of the window, including part of your body.
Refrain from eating on the bus. If a choking incident occurs, the driver may not be able to help immediately.
Wait until the school bus stops before standing up to exit the vehicle.
Tips for exiting the bus: When getting off the bus, take two large steps away from bus. If you have to walk in front of the bus, do so at least three metres
(10 giant steps) away from the bus.
The driver must be able to see students exiting the bus and will give a signal when it is safe to cross. If more than one student is
crossing in front of the bus at the same time, they should cross in single file.
Children must never reach for something that is under the bus without the driver’s permission. Let the driver know that some-
thing is under the bus or wait until the bus moves out of the way.
Tips for walking to school: Help your child establish a safe, direct route to school. Avoid potential safety hazards such as train tracks, busy intersections,
and reinforce what safety precautions to follow.
Stay on sidewalks whenever possible. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left side of the road and walk facing traffic.
Cross streets at intersections and at crosswalks and learn to look to the left, the right, and the left again before proceeding.
Wait until traffic comes to a stop before crossing. Make sure drivers see you before you cross. Don't assume the driver will stop
for you.
