FOCUS | OCTOBER 2012 3

There is nothing more motivating than the

prospect of a promising future.  I, for one am

confident our business models, our technol-

ogy, our work processes and you, our people,

are getting us closer to our goals every day.  What’s more

heartening to note is that our quarter on quarter results

are proof of this.

Of paramount importance is our rapid expansion into the

key BRIC markets of India and Brazil.  We are happy over

being shortlisted for Chennai’s 57 km monorail project.

In June, we were honoured to have Chief Minister Shri

Prithviraj Chavan visit our monorail site at Bhakti Park

Station.  Should we clinch the Chennai work, it will be

our second project in India after Mumbai.  Meanwhile our

Quark endeavour in Brazil sees us moving forward with

our production and engineering of our monorail systems.

We also made quite a name for ourselves when we show-

cased our Oilfield Services products at Neftegaz 2012 in

Russia and also our Transport Solutions earlier at an exhi-

bition in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during

the Rail and Metro Latin America

Conference.  Both our showings

not only expanded our pres-

ence but also attracted great

interest in our offerings.

Internally, we continue to

move ahead with the internal

restructuring of our businesses.

Once completed, we will see a

consolidation of the businesses

between Scomi Marine and the

OFS Eastern Hemisphere that we

anticipate will result in a signifi-

cant growth of our businesses

in the oil and gas industry.

The restructuring will also

allow us to provide greater

value-added services to

our oil and gas customers.  Further the emergence of a

new shareholder at Scomi Group Bhd, IJM Corporation

Berhad, brings complementary capabilities and business

growth potential to the group.  This strategic alliance

grows our profile and market presence as well as the op-

portunity to extend our product offerings.

Then there is you, our talented and dedicated pool of

individuals.  Recognising your importance to our organi-

sation, we have invested in training and development

programmes to keep you sharp and constantly moti-

vated to give your best towards the Group’s growth and

prosperity.  As some of you already know, our trainers

from GLaD have been travelling to various countries to

give you the tools and training you need to reach your

potential.  It is exciting and motivating and we are deter-

mined to continue with our training and development

programmes as we value each and every one of you as

our talent and our asset.

At our recently concluded Global Executive Meeting

(GEM) which had “Harnessing our Strengths” as the

central theme, we carried out a detailed analysis of the

strengths of our senior leadership team and I was pleased

to see that Teamwork emerged as our top strength. The

expert on enduring companies, Jim Collins, who au-

thored ‘Good to Great’, ‘Built to Last’ and ‘How the Mighty

Fall’ wrote that we all have to be on the same bus going

in the same direction if we want to achieve our corporate

strategy and become a long-lasting sustainable com-

pany.  Scomi is on the journey to become a market leader

in urban transport solutions and oil and gas, especially in

emerging markets.  Let us take that journey together as

a team.

“BESARNYA!” (Translated - “THAT’S HUGE!”). That was the first reaction from most

of us here at Scomi Oiltools Malaysia when we first got a glimpse of our very own

SCM-2564 Big Bowl Centrifuge at the Kemaman Supply Base (KSB), Malaysia. We

were of course referring to the sheer size of the unit, compared to other centrifuges

that were being used in our DWM operations.

BIG IS HOW WE LIKE IT!

FOCUS | OCTOBER 2012 5

Basically, the SCM-2564 is a de-

canting centrifuge that consists

of a conical and horizontal steel

bowl that rotates at high speed

using a double screw type conveyor. The

conveyor rotates in the same direc-

tion as the outer bowl but at a

slightly slower speed. The

centrifuge will typically be

used to remove drilled

solids from the active mud

system and possibly pro-

cess recovered drilling fluid

from the Extractor Dryer.

The reason why this unit is

known as a big bowl is because the

size of the bowl is larger; hence the average

handling capacity is higher than a regular

centrifuge (500gpm compared to 100-

150gpm). The superiority of the big bowl is

also apparent due to the enhanced VFD and

PLC systems. This allows for a low start up

amperage and the ability to have variable

speed on the bowl scroll. In terms of safety,

it has a fully automatic safety control system,

with rigid safety devices.

Several months before the centrifuge

arrived in Malaysia, we sent two

service engineers over for two

weeks to our colleagues at Scomi

Oiltools Inc, Houston to undergo

intense training on the principles

and operations of the centrifuge.

This proved vital towards achieving

optimum operation of the centrifuge

over here in Malaysia, as they had then

conducted training with other engineers at

our yards in KSB and ASB Labuan.

Presently, the first unit that arrived in

Malaysia is in operation on a jack-up rig at

offshore Terengganu. Another two units are

being used at the Liquid Mud Plants (LMP)

over in KSB Kemaman and ASB Labuan while

there is one more that will soon be used on

a semi-sub rig at offshore Labuan. Opera-

tions of the centrifuge have been successful

thus far.

So far, we have received positive comments

from our client as it has been running trouble

free for the continuous three wells drilled. Our

client is satisfied with the high volume pro-

cess rate because it reduces rig time during

the cut back of mud weight. In addition to

that, the high mud weight cut point provides

a clean mud return. With this in mind, we are

pleased to be expecting several more units to

arrive in the near future.

Higher revenue postedin Q2

Scomi Group posted a higher

revenue of RM442.9 million for Q2

2012, an increase of approximately

RM35.7 million due to the increase

in revenues from the Transport Solutions

and Energy Logistics divisions.

Although revenues were positive, profits

were affected by unrealised foreign

exchange losses of its Transport Solu-

tions division and termination costs in its

Energy Logistics division resulting in the

Group recording a lower profit before tax

of RM17.1 million, RM9.8 million lower

than the RM26.9 million reported for Q1

2012.

Overall revenue for the six-month period

ended 30 June 2012 (H1 2012) was RM850.1

million, an increase of 8.2%. Profit before tax

for this same period is RM44.0 million, an

increase of RM9.5 million. The contributions

to the Group’s revenue and profit before tax

came from the business segments of Oilfield

Services, Transport Solutions and Energy

Logistics.

OILFIELD SERVICES - this division

recorded slightly lower revenue of RM242.1

million as compared to the previous quarter.

However, the division recorded higher rev-

enues of RM485.4 million in H1 2012, a 15%

increase. The decline in the quarter revenue

was mainly due to delays in client drilling

programmes in most major countries except

Malaysia. Progressing through the year,

with increased drilling activities, the division

continues to show its expected results and is

confident of achieving its targets for the year.

TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS - this

division recorded higher revenues of RM103

million due to a bigger volume of work on

the KL Monorail fleet expansion project.

However, the division posted a loss before

tax of RM7.6 million due to unrealised

foreign exchange losses in the Mumbai

and Brazil’s St Judas projects as a result of

the weakening of the respective currencies

against Ringgit Malaysia. However excluding

the net unrealised forex losses, Q2 2012 reg-

istered a profit before tax of RM3.6 million.

ENERGY LOGISTICS - this division

recorded higher revenues of RM97.8 million,

an increase of 7.7%. However on a year on

year basis, the division posted slightly lower

revenues of RM188.6 million for H1 2012

as compared to RM194.7 million recorded

in the corresponding period H1 2011. This

decrease was mainly due to a reduction in

the coal transportation business. However

the impact to operating profit was cush-

ioned by savings in the fleet operating costs

comprising of bunker consumption, third

party re-charter and interest expenses. The

group also continued to derive steady earn-

ing streams from its offshore marine vessel

fleet enjoying an overall utilisation rate in

excess of 80%.

Scomi Engineering and its Indian partner IL&FS Transportation Network Ltd (ITNL) was shortlisted on 15 June 2012 to undertake Chennai’s 57 km monorail project, the first phase of which is estimated to be worth RM6 billion.

Touching on this development, Scomi

Group CEO Mr. Shah Hakim Zain said,

“We are honoured and excited to be

shortlisted with ITNL in this tender and

it’s a reflection of the growing interest in

monorails in India.”

Scomi Group’s Group COO Kanesan

Veluppillai commented that if Scomi

secured the Chennai project, it would not

only be the company's second monorail

project in India but the biggest monorail

project ever to be undertaken by Scomi.

The monorail business in India alone is

estimated to be worth US$15 billion over

the next five years with 20 cities inclu-

ding New Delhi, Thiruvandram, Pune and

Bangalore already working on implemen-

tation plans for monorail systems.

Scomi's operations in India also cover

Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, both of which

have master plans to implement mono-

rail projects. The tender exercise is likely

to take two months.

Scomi Marine Berhad (SMB) has embarked

on a capital repayment scheme to reward

shareholders while placing it on a stronger

growth trajectory to produce better returns

and improve shareholders’ value over the long term.

The scheme was approved by shareholders at an Ex-

traordinary General Meeting held on 11 June 2012 and

disbursed on 29 August 2012.

According to the terms of the capital repayment exer-

cise, SMB shareholders will receive a cash distribution

amounting to RM135.61 million on the basis of RM0.185

for every existing ordinary share of RM1.00 each in SMB

held at 5 p.m. on 17 August 2012.

The cash distribution will be funded by proceeds re-

ceived from the disposal of the entire equity interest

in CH Logistics Private Limited, CH Ship Management

Private Limited and Grundtvig Marine Private Limited

by Scomi Marine Services Pte Ltd (SMS), a wholly

owned subsidiary of SMB. The equity disposal exer-

cise was completed on 12 April 2012. The entire ac-

cumulated losses of SMB and the estimated expenses

in relation to the capital repayment scheme will be

offset against these proceeds prior to distribution to

SMB shareholders.

As a result of the capital repayment exercise, the par

value of each SMB share will be reduced from RM1.00 to

RM0.45 per share and the entire share premium of the

Company will also be reduced.

Apart from placing SMB on a clean slate, the capital

repayment scheme will pave the way for Scomi Group’s

corporate restructuring plan announced on 19 February

2012, which aims to establish a new business unit focus-

ing on upstream drilling services. This new entity which

will combine Scomi Group Bhd’s Eastern Hemisphere

Oilfield Services business units with SMB’s Offshore Ves-

sel Services business is expected to strengthen Scomi’s

competitive position in the oil and gas industry.

Scomi Marine Rewards Shareholders through RM135.61 Million Capital Repayment Exercise

SCOMI’S INDIA UNIT, Urban Transit Pvt Ltd can look

forward to begin work on the Mumbai Monorail project when

operations begin in January 2013. The announcement was

made on 14 June 2012 by the Chief Minister of Maharashtra

Shri Prithviraj Chavan at the end of his visit to all major infra-

structure projects in the state.

Scomi Group’s Group COO Kanesan Veluppillai

said Scomi would be in charge of the operations

and management of the full completion of the

19 km project for a duration of six years. He

added that Scomi already had a team of 60

personnel trained in all aspects of the Monorail

including operations control, depot and rolling

stock maintenance. Scomi also had the mono-

rail drivers to run the system. The Monorail is now

undergoing various tests in preparation for upcoming

trial runs. The first phase of the Monorail is 10.5 km and will stretch

between Chembur and Wadala. The second phase measuring 8.5

km will connect Jacob Circle and Wadala.

Glowing reports for Scomi Oiltools Team

Country Manager of Scomi Oil-

tools Malaysia Rozali Sidek was

proud to share with his team,

the praises of Jonathon Sheldon

of Sarawak Shell Berhad Lutong who sent

him a letter highlighting the outstanding

performance of the Scomi Oiltools / Scomi

KMC team. According to Jonathon, Scomi

was arguably one of the best service

providers the Wells Department has had

since 2011, saying they have enjoyed zero

NPT in the past 12 months leading up to

December 2011.

During that period approximately 334,000

bbls of various fluids (water-based and

synthetic-based muds, drill-in fluids

and completion brines) were mixed and

handled within the Liquid Mud Plant,

without any issues. Fluids load-outs were

also consistently prompt, with no signifi-

cant downtime. SMEP also experienced no

major issues with their centrifuges, augers,

cuttings dryer, brine filtration units and

mud cooler equipment.

Also mentioned was Scomi’s tank clean-

ing system that had been a phenomenal

success. Scomi’s flat-rheology CONFI DEEP

mud system specifically designed for

the Gumusut-Kakap campaign had been

exceptional for deepwater wells, saving

the company some US$4 million in fluids

costs.

Scomi was also praised for their hands-on

field engineers that Jonathon described

as very experienced. Confident enough to

voice their opinions and give suggestions

on how to improve performance, these en-

gineers were also very receptive towards

SMEP’s QHSE programmes.

Scomi’s desk engineers were also praised

for their excellent HSE leadership and

technical support as were DWM person-

nel for their excellent support. Finally

Jonathon stated his satisfaction at Scomi’s

KL Monorail Fleet Expansion Project

MALAYSIA

ScomibusinessA R O U N D T H E W O R L D

The KL Monorail Fleet Expansion

Project was awarded to Scomi in

early 2011. The scope of work in-

volves the complete replacement

of existing rolling stocks (12 x 2-car trains)

with a new fleet of 12 x 4-car trains, up-

grading works for Electrical & Mechanical

Systems (communications, power supply

and distribution, new signalling system,

new Platform Automatic Gates (PAGS),

workshop equipment and track switches)

and also civil and structural (C&S) works.

The latter involves the upgrading of 11 sta-

tions as well as the construction of a new

depot building and stabling yard.

FOCUS | OCTOBER 2012 13

As you walk around our North KL Facility in

Rawang, you will surely notice the striking

new 4-car KL Monorail Trains in chilli red

and sparkling white. The body shell of the

first and second sets has been completed

and the cars are now being equipped with

peripheral equipment for testing soon.

On the other hand, trains 3 and 4 have

commenced fabrication. It is expected the

delivery of the first two sets of 4-car trains

to Brickfields will most likely take place by

year-end.

On the civil side of the project, the works

include the construction of a 3-storey new

depot building and upgrades to 11 existing

monorail stations. The new depot build-

ing can be seen clearly from the Federal

Highway. This building will be used for

the maintenance of the new 4-car trains.

Construction is almost complete on the third

floor, after which the roof structure will be

tackled. Apart from that, apparent along the

riverbank is the Fire & Rescue Department

of Malaysia (BOMBA) Access road where

almost 50 columns have been constructed.

Measuring approximately 350 meters in

length from the main entrance and passing

along the riverbank of Sg. Klang, it will serve

as the main access road to the new depot as

well as the emergency access for BOMBA. Its

construction was completed early this year.

Lastly almost all monorail stations have had

their platforms extended, which is the major

work in station upgrades. Next, the existing

fabric-like roof membranes will be replaced

with metal roofing, which are more durable

and appealing in design. All in all, the KL

Monorail Project is making good progress.

Soon we will be able to spot Scomi Mono-

rails chugging across KL City Centre. Stay

tuned for more updates in the coming issues

of FOCUS as we get ready to board the new

Scomi 4-car trains.

comi Engineering Bhd together with Montagens e Projetos Espe-

ciais (MPE) were happy to accept an invitation to showcase their

products at the annual Rail and Metro Latin America Conference

held from 8-10 May 2012 at the Windsor Atlantica Hotel in Rio de

Janeiro, Brazil.

Recognised within the rail industry as ‘Latin America’s dedicated technical

congress for rail and metro infrastructure’ the conference was also a great

opportunity for networking. There were also numerous seminars held that

gave more insight to the opportunities that existed within the Brazilian Rail

industry.

THIS YEAR’S CONFERENCE TOPICS INCLUDED THE FOLLOWING:

METRÔ INSIGHT: ‘The Rail Systems: An approach to mobility projects in

Brazil, new technological trends and models’ by Conrado Grava de Souza,

Presidential Representative of SP Metrô

ASSOCIATION INSIGHTS: ‘Metro Rail Technology’ by Luiz Fernando Ferrari,

Vice-President of Simefre

INDUSTRY INSIGHTS: ‘Exploring the potential of new technologies to

a seminar on monorails on 3 May 2012 in the city of

Belem. The purpose of the event was to introduce the

benefits of a monorail system to some 20 people from various

government bodies of the state of Para. Apart from Nadia Hasbi

who represented Scomi and Alex Pires from MPE, the other del-

egates were Halan Moreira and Andres von Stockert from Brasell

as well as Thomais from Thales.

Transportation consultant Antonio Maria Claret was also present

to support the event. Halan, Thomais and Claret gave presenta-

tions about the benefits of a monorail system.

The event was a success because ABRAMON received an invita-

tion from the Secretary of the State of Para for an official visit the

following day to discuss a possible monorail project. Belem is

located within the state of Para, northeast of Brazil and has a total

population of approximately 7.5 million. It has been identified as a

city with monorail potential.

It was a proud moment for us when

Scomi Group’s Group COO Kanesan

in New Delhi, India.

With the theme ‘Moving Towards Cleaner,

industry leaders, government officials

and other stakeholders that made up the

summit delegates. Kanesan was among

16 panel speakers who discussed a wide

range of issues including ways to ensure

advantageous booth location certainly

caught everybody’s attention. Since the

equipment is the newest of its kind in

the Russian market, many existing and

potential customers were interested

to know more about the equipment’s

For the first time ever in Russia a little

stand with chemicals was presented

at the booth. This proved to be a great

success among visitors as only few

companies offer production chemicals

services together with DWM equipment.

Scomi Oiltools’ booth was a great success,

gathering people from different industries

and it is our hope this endeavour will be a

step towards taking the company to a new

level of rendering services in Russia.

Our participation in the exhibition also

gave us the opportunity to organise a talk

Potential customers were invited to the

event beforehand and many of them

• Dealing with Change

• Preparing for Change

• Barriers to Change

• Making Change Happen, and

The underlying message that everyone

Learning from the experts MALAYSIA

Scomi Oiltools has initiated a

series of OFS Accelerated Learn-

THE OBJECTIVES OF THE

SESSIONS ARE TO:

• Accelerate the learning process

of employees in various avenues

• Facilitate knowledge-sharing

within the company

• Promote inter-departmental

communication, understanding

and appreciation of roles

Speakers, who came from a diverse range

of functions within the organisation, were

each given 30-45 minutes to speak on

their experiences and

share their knowledge

with the audience. There

was also time for questions

from the floor later.

The first session kicked off with DF En-

gineer Hadi Hamzah who spoke about his

first hitch (offshore rig experience). Hadi

introduced us to life on the rig and got us

familiarised with terms such as monkey

board and spud mud.

Other speakers were GLaD’s Sasidha-

ran Muniandy who spoke on ‘Personal

Branding’; DWM Engineer Suphasan who

touched on the topic of ‘Drilling Waste

Management’; GRTC Technical Training’s

Tom Elliot who spoke on ‘Competency

Mapping’; Legal’s Quin Leon who shared

his views on ‘How the OFS Legal Division

Adds Value to Operations’ and Supply

Chain Management’s Nafeesa Najwa who

spoke on ‘Procurement’.

The sessions were very inter-

esting as it was informal but

informative. The OFS Accelerated

Learning Sessions take place twice

a month and we are happy to note that

attendance is slowly picking up.

As our President, Steve Bracker said, “The

idea of these [informal] sessions is to learn

from people who are also learning them-

selves [not just subject-matter experts or

interactions in formal classroom environ-

ments]. So the sessions are more accessi-

ble rather than intimidating; encouraging

W ithout realising it, 2012 is

coming to an end, with

each Scomi employee

engrossed with more work

and career progression. Similarly, Scomi’s

very own Speakers Club has established

itself as the focal point of many conversa-

tions, with each participant going a step

closer towards realising their potential

from a vocal perspective.

APRIL saw all Speakers Club participants

dressed in black, looking sombre, as they

shared their self-written eulogies. With

the theme of the session being that of a

funeral, the participants were taught and

groomed about the art of captivating an

audience even at the most depressing of

times. However, that did not wipe out the

usual fun of the Speakers Club. Amongst

the highlights was Nafeesa’s outpourings

of an emotional granddaughter, comple-

mented by her attractive funeral-themed

fascinator (these are the exhibitionist

hats), as well as Andrew’s fictitious life as

an assassinated criminal mastermind.

MAY’S session was themed ‘The Voice’,

that applied the same concept of its reality

TV show namesake, where participants

were given a set of tongue twisters to

recite in front of a three-judge panel.

‘The Voice’ taught participants the art of

pronunciation, punctuation, and enuncia-

tion, which keeps a voice alive even in an

agonisingly dull text. The concept of the

reality show resulted in a very entertain-

ing session, especially when the panel of

judges were asked to recite the tongue

twisters themselves, with the previous

contestants judging the judges.

JUNE brought about arguably the most

memorable Speakers Club session to date,

which was themed ‘Dramatic Speech’. Par-

ticipants were at their creative best, recit-

ing Shakespeare and Martin Luther King,

even re-enacting the famous Star Wars

scene when Darth Vader utters, “Luke, I’m

your father” (with a very witty improvised

script) performed by Rueben, Aliff and

Gene. Despite the high standards set by

each participant, the stage was stolen by

an enthralling performance by SEB’s Chris-

topher, who provided us with his rendition

of The Joker, bringing about a chilling, pin-

drop silence throughout, that concluded

with rapturous applause. Amidst the fun

and jokes, all participants obtained invalu-

able lessons on preparation, the calming

of nerves, body language, and eye contact.

“ MAY YOU LIVE TO BE 100 AND

MAY THE LAST VOICE YOU HEAR

BE MINE”, said Frank Sinatra once

upon a time.

While the thought of living up to a

hundred years may appear far-fetched, it

seems rather believable that his is indeed

the voice that many will hear last. Analo-

gously, we should always remember, that

dreams should never be underestimated,

as we learn to implant a soul in every word

we speak, a rhythm in every beat of our

voices, a genius in every thought we share,

at Scomi’s very own Speakers Club.

Geng Anti Karat (G.A.K), The Pioneers, and

The Avengers.

After settling down, we plunged

straight in with a case study

and ice-breaking games on

the programme’s training

objectives. One particular game ‘Birds,

Nest and Hurricane’ had everyone running

around the hall in a frenzy; showing the

importance of knowing one another’s

roles and being flexible to change. This

was very relevant as we soon sat down

for our new GM, Khairil Anuar’s presenta-

tion on PET’s performance and strategies

moving forward. He introduced everyone’s

role in the organisation and stressed the

importance of each individual’s action in

achieving the organisation’s overall goal.

Before the night ended, we were divided

into three teams - Geng Anti Karat (G.A.K),

The Pioneers, and The Avengers. The next

morning, a scoring system was introduced

that pit the teams against each other

as more activities continued to put our

various skills to the test. The highlight of

the day was when we had to build a boat

using materials to be found around the

resort; testing our leadership capabilities

and innovativeness.

The third day was the most taxing as it

was jam-packed with outdoor activities

from morning till afternoon. Our mental

skills were equally challenged as each

team took time to reflect on our learnings

from previous activities to share with the

class. This was followed by a CSR activity at

Rumah Kanak-kanak Kota Kinabalu in the

evening. We were rewarded at the end of

the day with a nice seafood dinner cour-

tesy of Khairil. On our final day, we merged

into a single Team Sosma to complete our

final task - a scavenger hunt of sorts which

saw the team leveraging on each other’s

strengths to successfully reach comple-

tion. This was a testament to us meeting

our objectives at the outset of the Team

Enhancement Programme, proving the

veracity of our adopted motto that indeed,

Cooking our way into their hearts

MALAYSIA

The Scomi Sosma team was

given one task - to prepare

a night to remember for

the residents of Rumah

Kanak-kanak (RKK) Kota Kinabalu

in Kampung Beringgis, Papar. The

specifications? Dinner for 125 chil-

dren and adults, with a menu set by

the kids’ themselves: Chicken Biryani

(fragrant spice rice). Our resources?

RM300, and a recommendation

from our course coordinator to visit

Google. The date? 14 July 2012.

Led by our Head Chefs for the

evening - Japar and Syaiful - we

more than tripled the initial pool of

money (over RM1,000); all out of our

own pockets, as it was for a good

cause. By 4 p.m. we arrived at RKK

ready to take on our roles as chefs for

the day. Upon arrival, we set about

our prep work such as peeling veg-

etables, boiling stock, chopping on-

ions and blending spices. Here, the

inherent cooking skills of the team

were revealed whilst others picked

up some new skills for the kitchen at

home. Talent Manager from GLaD,

Sasi walked around exclaiming

dramatically at everything - from the

proper way to fry chicken to criticis-

ing the size of the grapes we bought

- in an attempt to throw us off our

game. As time passed and our team

of runners stuck in traffic with our

missing key ingredients, the pressure

of finishing on time built up. I am

proud to report the team remained

unfazed by the pressure and Sasi’s

shouting presence. As the last of the

kids’ trickled into the dining hall, the

final tray of food was cling-wrapped

and ready to be served after a short

entertainment session. First

up, Aien started a pop quiz,

complete with attrac-

tive prizes, which was

a big hit with the kids.

Next, Syaiful took over

with some games and

funny antics that filled

the hall with laughter.

By then, the spirit to win

had caught on and the chil-

dren cheered as the RKK staff

were called on to participate. Lastly,

Japar addressed the hall with a talk

to inspire the kids to strive for their

best, even in the face of challenges

and less-than-ideal conditions.

Finally, the team served up the

highlight of the night - a three-

course meal of fruit salad, nasi

biryani served with ayam masak

merah (spicy chicken) and pappa-

dum (Indian crisps), and for dessert

- grapes, mango pudding and a

selection of chocolates; complete

with sirap bandung (syrup milk

drink) and fruit punch. Whilst there,

we found out more about the plight

of some of RKK’s residents, which

left many of us shocked and teary-

eyed, contemplating how fortunate

we all are in comparison. As the

kids thanked us one by one for the

hearty meal, we couldn’t help but

wonder if it was us that should be

thanking them for letting us into

their hearts. After all, what is one

dinner compared to the lifelong les-

sons we learnt from our humbling

experience at RKK.

commencing his work, the tradesman took the neces-

safety glasses and ear plugs. However Matt felt more

precaution was needed. When it was safe to stop him,

Matt asked if he would prefer a face shield and ear muffs

instead. The man agreed but said he did not have those

items in his kit. Matt then provided him with the proper

PPE and had a safety conversation with him on the

importance of giving his personal safety greater prior-

the deck floor he noticed a pool of water and a wet floor. He located a

worker performing high pressure cleaning in the area and immediate-

ly brought his attention to the pool of water further away. He advised

him to be careful as visibility was low since it was nightfall. Damian

did this to help prevent the worker from accidently slipping or falling

and injuring himself. The worker was thankful and a ‘caution wet floor’

Bong receives safety award

IT IS WITH FOND MEMORIES

that we look back on 6 May 2012

when Nathan Alexander presented

the popular Safety Leader of the Week

award to deserving recipient Bong

Chee Kiong. “This week’s Safety Leader

award recipient is Bong Chee Kiong

from Scomi. Kiong has been nominated

a number of times for his consist-

ent START card participation and his

penchant for always looking out for his

workmates. Kiong’s peers and supervi-

sors value his worthy safety leadership.

Thanks for looking out for your work

mates Kiong,” said Alexander. Kiong was

a family man and his family was his life

and first priority. We recall only recently

having a conversation with Kiong about

his family and his plans for his future

with them. They made him very proud.

Rest in peace, dear colleague.

It was with deep sadness that we learned that

Bong Chee Kiong, one of our most senior col-

leagues had passed away on 30 May 2012. Kiong,

previously from our Malaysia operations, was

then working with our Australia operations. Bong Chee

Kiong’s passing will be felt by everyone who had the

pleasure of working with him. A popular figure, Kiong

was liked and trusted by everyone who had the good

fortune to know him. He was a highly skilled engineer

and greatly respected by his colleagues. He was held

in deep affection by all of the crew on the Deepwater

Frontier, which was his final assignment. We

noted that he had recently received a

Safety Award and that he had been af-

fectionately nicknamed ‘BillaBong’ by

his colleagues on the rig. This was a

true mark of affection between Kiong

and his mates.
