BIGGEST DANGER TO THEPOPULARITY OF BETTING
Op/Ed by Kevin Blake
Horse racing, in common with any sport, has its share of
opportunities and challenges as it fights for the public's
attention and support. The world of sport and entertainment
has never been more competitive than it is now, and with it
being a world that is ever changing and evolving, those sports
that fail to adapt to their customers' needs and wants are being
left behind.
Of all the challenges that horse racing faces in Great Britain
and Ireland, one of the biggest dangers is also the one that is the
least discussed in the racing media. It is a problem that has been
growing steadily for the better part of a decade and now
represents one of the biggest threats to the future financial
stability and popularity of horse racing. That problem is the
rampant practice of bookmakers severely restricting the stakes
it allows bettors to place on the outcomes of horse races.
Listening to the plethora of bookmaker's PR reps that are
omnipresent in the racing media, an outside observer might
think that modern bookmakers are aggressive operators that
take on all comers both big and small. However, unless you are
an incompetent or ill-informed bettor that is a long-term loser,
the reality couldn't be further from this image.

SIX AUSSIE RAIDERS FOR APPLEBY Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby will have his first Australian
runners during the spring carnival, and the Newmarket-based
conditioner will look to make a big impact with six shippers,
according to Racing.com.
Scottish (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) was on Wednesday assigned a
weight of 54.5kg (120 pounds) for the G1 Caulfield Cup Oct. 15,
and Appleby told the site, "I am happy with that weight. He is an
adaptable horse with a high cruising speed, who I think will be
ideal for Caulfield.@
Scottish is one of five nominated by Appleby to the Nov. 1
G1 Melbourne Cup, and the trainer said, "All of the five in my
stable have completed their preparations over here [in
Newmarket] and they are ready to go into quarantine on
Sept. 15.@

Biggest Danger To The
Popularity of Betting cont. from p1
While bookmakers will do everything they can
to court, accommodate and encourage bettors
that have proven themselves to be consistent
losers, bettors that show even a hint of
competency and seek to avail of a competitive price can expect
to have their stakes with online bookmakers
severely restricted, often to literally cents and
pennies. The situation isn't much better in
betting shops, with bookmakers employing all
sorts of methods to make it as difficult as
possible for skilled bettors to place bets of
anything bar small stakes with them.
The betting world has unquestionably
undergone significant change in the last 15
years or so, primarily due to the popularity of the internet and
online betting. This has made it easier for bookmakers to
monitor their customers, but it has also led to bettors becoming
more informed and aware of the importance of value.
In that time there has also been a notable change in
bookmaker behaviour that has led the betting industry to the
situation it now finds itself in.
In the past, bookmakers took pride in their bravery in taking
on all comers, being willing to take losses from individuals in the
hope that they would beat that customer in the long run.
However, the modern reality for bookmakers is that the
bean-counting accountants have taken over. The type of
customer they primarily want to deal with is the small-staking
recreational bettor that will bet all day long without any regard
for value, strategy or discipline.
How they seek to achieve this is by either
closing the accounts or more commonly
severely restricting the permitted betting
stakes of any of their customers that show
competency in their betting.
The danger of this policy should be obvious
to all. Horse racing is an incredibly complex
sport in which the betting odds are
fundamentally fixed in the favour of the
bookmakers. Becoming skilled and disciplined enough to have a
chance at making a long-term profit by betting on it takes
thousands of hours of work and only a very small percentage of
people that bet on horse racing make it pay. Cont. p3
“Bettors that show even a hintof competency and seek to avail
of a competitive price canexpect to have their stakes with
online bookmakers severelyrestricted, often to literally
cents and pennies.”
TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 3 OF 12 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 2 SEPTEMBER, 2016
Kevin Blake cont.
With the modern reality for successful bettors being that
placing meaningful stakes at fair prices is often a bigger
challenge than finding winners, one could understand why
intelligent, hard-working sports enthusiasts would rather
dedicate themselves to getting good at betting on a sport in
which they can at least bet in big stakes if they wish to without
undue hassle, such as football.
What is even more concerning is that risk-averse bookmaker
practice doesn't just detrimentally effect profitable bettors. One
doesn't even necessarily have to win money off the bookmaker
to have their account restricted or closed, as backing horses at
bigger prices than they are sent off at no matter whether they
go on to win or lose is often sufficient to result in stake
restrictions from bookmakers.
Worse still, rather than taking these decisions to restrict
bettors based on a large sample of bets, in many cases bettors
are finding their stakes restricted after a mere handful of bets.
This means that countless recreational punters that have been,
or are likely to be, long-term losers are being caught up in the
crossfire of bookmaker stake restrictions, causing no end of
frustration and disillusionment amongst a group that is one of
the foundation stones of the racing industry. It is hard enough to
attract new customers into horse racing as it is without
risk-averse bookmaker practice turning them away from betting
on the sport.
Given that not all horse racing supporters are regular bettors,
this problem is not one that will be familiar to everyone involved
in racing. Awareness of the scale and seriousness of the problem
has also been stifled by the fact that bookmakers are one of the
leading advertisers and employers in the racing media, meaning
that precious few racing journalists and broadcasters have been
willing to upset the apple cart by raising the issue.
Even to those supporters of horse racing that have no interest
in betting, the bigger-picture ramifications of all of this should
be very clear. Whether one likes it or not, horse racing and
betting are joined at the hip. In all bar a handful of super-rich
racing jurisdictions, a significant proportion of the funding that
funds horse racing comes either directly or indirectly from the
betting industry. Whether one is talking about betting tax/levy
that directly funds the sport, the lucrative media rights deals
that are so vital to the finances of racecourses or the significant
sponsorship/advertising revenue the racing industry attracts
from the betting sector, all of it is directly linked to the
popularity of betting on horse racing. If betting turnover on
racing continues to drop, the value of all those revenue streams
will drop, which will translate to drastically-reduced funding and
media coverage for horse racing. Cont. p4
TDN EUROPE/INTERNATIONAL • PAGE 4 OF 12 • THETDN.COM FRIDAY • 2 SEPTEMBER, 2016
Kevin Blake cont.
Horse racing's share of the betting turnover pie has already
been significantly reduced in the last 15 years as betting on
other sports and wagering mediums has increased in popularity.
Increasingly risk-averse practice by bookmakers and active
efforts by bookmakers to funnel horse racing bettors into other
betting mediums that are more profitable and predictable for
them, such as sports betting and casino games, are only serving
to accelerate this redistribution of betting turnover.
The solution to this very serious problem is simple. A
precedent has been set in Australia in recent years whereby the
racing authorities in New South Wales made it a requirement for
any bookmaker that wished to take bets on races held there to
guarantee to accept a bet from any customer to lose a minimum
liability of AUS$1,000 at country tracks and AUS$2,000 at city
tracks. Despite a great amount of protest from the bookmakers
at the time that new rule was introduced, two years into the
arrangement reports suggest that the guarantee is working to
the satisfaction of both bookmakers and bettors. Indeed, a
similar policy is currently in the process of being implemented in
Victoria.
The closest thing we have to such a situation in Great Britain
and Ireland are a set of similar guarantees that were voluntarily
introduced by Coral for their British-based betting shop
customers, which they have expressed satisfaction with. More
recently, a new bookmaker called Black Type Bet has launched
in recent weeks that seeks to return to a traditional bookmaking
model and offer a guaranteed bet up to a ,500 liability to all
comers as well as a promise not to close winning accounts.
While it is admirable for Coral and Black Type Bet to take it
upon themselves to offer such guarantees, if the tide of falling
betting turnover on horse racing is to be reversed, the
introduction of an across-the-board bet guarantee is the only
realistic solution. This is too serious a situation for the
government and the racing authorities to continue to ignore.

BBAG YEARLING SALE FRIDAYBy Emma Berry
Germany=s main yearling auction gets underway today in the
picturesque spa town of Baden-Baden. After withdrawals, 238
yearlings are set to go under the hammer for the one-day sale
held during a week of top-class racing, culminating in Sunday=s
G1 Grosser Preis Von Baden, at Iffezheim racecourse next-door
to the sales complex.
A New Approach (Ire) colt named Woodkid (Ger) from the
Gestut Brummerhof draft topped last year=s sale at i400,000,
with turnover of i6,345,250 being accrued from the sale of 152
horses at an average price of i41,745 and median of i30,000.
Gestut Auenquelle=s popular stallion Soldier Hollow (GB) (In The
Wings {GB}) was the leading sire by average in 2015, with 15
yearlings sold for i81,300, and he has an even bigger
representation in this year=s sale with 31 yearlings catalogued.
The 2013 running of the G1 Prix Ganay at Longchamp saw
Soldier Hollow=s top-rated son Pastorius (Ger) narrowly get the
better of the Niarchos-bred Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}), and
the two--now
stablemates in
Gestut Fahrhof=s
stallion yard--will go
head-to-head again,
this time in the ring
at Baden-Baden,
where members of
their first crops will
be put to the test.
Pastorius has eight
catalogued, while
Maxios, whose first foals averaged over i70,000 in Europe last
year, has 21.
Maxios is not the only freshman son of Monsun with yearlings
on sale today, as Darley=s Haras du Logis resident Masterstroke
is represented by four yearlings. The first-season sire line-up is
completed by Gestut Rottgen=s Reliable Man (GB), along with
Camelot (GB), Dabirsim (Fr), Havana Gold (GB), Lethal Force
(Ire), Most Improved (Ire) and Planteur (Ire).
Lot 194, Gestut Wittekindshof=s filly by the 2009 G1 Deutsches
Derby Wiener Walzer (Ger) (Dynaformer), has benefitted from a
decent update this season as her dam Serienhoehe (Ire) (High
Chaparral {Ire}), winner of the G3 Maurice Lacroix-Trophy, is a
half-sister to the G1 Preis Der Diana (German Oaks) heroine
Serienholde.
The sale starts at 10 a.m. local time.

EAGLE TOP RETIRED Eagle Top (GB) (Pivotal {GB}BGull Wing {Ire}, by In The Wings
{GB}), winner of the 2014 G2 King Edward VI S. at Royal Ascot,
has been retired, trainer John Gosden told Racing Post. The 5-
year-old, campaigned as a homebred by Lady Bamford, was
runner-up at Royal Ascot the following year in the G2 Hardwicke
S., and recorded perhaps his most memorable performance
when second by a
nose to Postponed

last year=s King
George VI and Queen
Elizabeth S. Eagle Top
had failed to hit the
board in three tries
this year, and was
last seen finishing
ninth in the
G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud July 3.
"We've decided to retire Eagle Top and hopefully we can now
find a nice stud job for him,@ Gosden told Racing Post. AHe is a
good-looking horse with a good mind on him and he was very
much a top-of-the-ground performer.@
"I thought his best performance was his win in the King
Edward VII S., as the form of the race has worked out very well,@
Gosden added. AAs I remember, he had subsequent Grade 1
winner Adelaide well behind him in second that day."
Out of the stakes-winning Gull Wing, Eagle Top is a full-brother
to this term=s G2 Dante S. winner Wings Of Desire (GB), who
emulated him with a runner-up effort in the King George, as well

FOURTEEN FOR CHINA AUSTRALIA CUP A field of 14 has been drawn for the inaugural Inglis China
Australia Cup, whichBwith a purse of -1-million
(US$149,738)Bwill be the richest open class race ever contested
in China. The race will be run at Yulong Racecourse in Shanxi
Province in the North China region on Saturday.
The field for the 1200-metre race is made up of graduates of
various Inglis sales, and six of the 14 were formerly trained in
Australia.
Seven ownership groups are represented, headed by Yuesheng
Zhang, who has six entered. With two runners each are Zhiheng
Zhao and Zhiqiang An.
The race forms part of Inglis=s program to support horse racing
in China. The company=s Managing Director Mark Webster said,
AThe Chinese racing market continues to evolve at a rapid rate
and Inglis is thrilled to have been a long-time partner. To be
involved with the richest open race run in China in such a long
time is something we are very proud of. Saturday=s race will
mark a significant milestone in the Chinese racing industry and
Inglis hopes to be involved for many years to come and continue
to play a role in strengthening the industry with our Asian
neighbours.@
Yuesheng Zhang added, AThere=s no doubt at all that the Inglis
China Australia Cup will create a big demand of Inglis graduates
exported to China for racing and breeding purposes. Even more
importantly, by having Inglis already signed on for their support
again for next year=s running of the race, they have created their
own brand in the Thoroughbred industry in China as a great
contributor to the development of horse racing in our country.@

SARATOGA SPRINGS, New York--When trainer Mark Hennig
went down to Lexington last year for the Keeneland September
sale to shop with Don Adam of Courtlandt Farms, he had no idea
what he was getting himself into
AHe just called me up, kind of sent a few horses in and then we
just kept getting more until we had all of them,@ Hennig said of
around this time last year when he started training for the
prominent owner/breeder. AThen we went to the sale at

Nice babies might be an understatement. When the dust
settled at KEESEP, Adam, Hennig and Courtlandt farm manager
Ernie Retamoza had signed for six regally bred yearlings for a

STRIVING TO BE BIGGER, BETTER, NEW
ENHANCEMENTS AT KY DOWNS MEETBy Bill Finley
With his track already having purses that are nothing less than
staggering, a five-day festival meet and a betting product that
horseplayers find irresistible, one of the biggest challenges for
Kentucky Downs President Corey Johnsen is how to make one
meet better than the next. It may not be easy, but track
management will try to build on past successes this year with an
improved simulcasting presentation, even higher purses and
through a purse contribution it made to Ellis Park, which
Johnsen believes can only help his track.
Johnsen wants Kentucky Downs to be known as the most
horseplayer-friendly track in the country. With its big fields and
low takeouts, Kentucky Downs is already ranked No. 1 as the top
track for gamblers by the Horseplayers Association of North
America. Yet, Johnsen felt the track's simulcasting presentation
needed work. Cont. p4

Ball=s In Hennig=s >Court= cont.
AI didn=t know when I got there,@ Hennig said Wednesday
morning outside of his Saratoga barn when asked what the
game plan was going into KEESEP. AMr. Adam just asked me if I
was coming to Keeneland and said he might buy something. I
thought he might buy one horse. But when we started out it
didn=t take me long to realize he was pretty serious about it. And
I think he will be again this year.@
He continued, AMy wife and I went down there and we
combined the lists of horses we had each looked at
independently--I wrote down some horses, Ernie wrote down
some horses and Mr. Adam wrote down some horses and we
looked at those and put together what we felt was a real nice
list. We hit it off right away--it=s a great relationship. We had a
lot of fun during the sale, and we=ve had a great time
subsequently the rest of the year. We=ve had great
communication and we=ve enjoyed it. It feels like a real team.@
When Hennig returned to his New York base after the sale, he
was joined by Courtlandt homebred Strike Charmer (Smart
Strike), winner of the
2014 GIII Cardinal H. for
previous conditioner
David Carroll. The then-
5-year-old mare took a
grassy Aqueduct
allowance in her first start
for the Hennig barn in
November, and has been
in the best form of her
career this term at six.
She annexed the GIII Beaugay S. May 14 at Belmont, but was
eighth in the GI Just a Game S. back there June 11 and fifth--
beaten just 1 3/4 lengths--in the GI Diana S. at Saratoga July 23.
Last Saturday, Strike Charmer rallied from last to first to upset
previously unbeaten Lady Eli (Divine Park) at 27-1 in the
GII Woodford Reserve Ballston Spa S.
AWe were optimistic--we were hoping she could get one of
those with her name on it,@ Hennig said when asked if he was
surprised at all by his charge=s most recent performance. AShe
was close. She had won the Beaugay at Belmont and had shown
she kind of fit with that group. In the Just a Game, she had no
chance to run, and was only beaten six lengths. You kind of just
have to wait until the luck falls your way sometimes. It got us off
the duck [at the meet], too.@
And those pricey Keeneland babies have started showing up in
the afternoon, as well. In last Saturday=s opener, Capitaine
(Tapit), a $400,000 purchase from the family of Kitten=s Joy and
Dreaming of Anna, finished a sneaky-good fifth going six panels.

AHe was out a little wide, got bounced around a bit, but I
thought going three-quarters he ran a very credible race,@ said
Hennig, who added that few if any of the horses he=s ever
trained have run their best race in their first race, and that the
horses Adam purchased at Keeneland are all more geared
towards Classic-type races.
Sunday it was $340,000 pick-up Cursor (Quality Road)=s chance
to strut her stuff. Away slowly, she kicked home nicely down the
center of the track to put a scare into well-meant fellow
newcomer Sky Gesture (Tiznow) and finish a clear second.
AI thought she might go ahead and get the job done going
three-quarters because she=s just that kind of horse,@ Hennig
said of the close relative to local Grade I winner Visionaire and
Grade I-winning >TDN Rising Star= Tara=s Tango. AShe does
everything right. But she had that outside post, got shuffled back
a little bit early. I had told [jockey] Junior [Alvarado] don=t rush
her--don=t chase--let her run her race. She=ll take the dirt, she=ll
do everything right. She=s never done a thing wrong. I thought
maybe class would get her there, but she ran into a nice filly.@
He added, AYou=ve got to be excited about a horse like her. She
was probably less fit than Capitaine, but she just did it out of
pure will. Like I told Mr. Adam after the race, if the winner
wasn=t in there she would=ve broken her maiden by 8 1/2. And
that=s knowing that she wasn=t even totally fit yet. It=s
encouraging, and obviously more ground is going to help her.@
Hennig says he=s pleased with what the Courtlandt 2-year-olds
have shown him despite some setbacks, and will debut a Tapit
colt named Spectacular Jack for Adam in Saturday=s fourth race
at Saratoga.
AHe was just kind of backwards all through the spring,@ Hennig
noted. AIt=s taken him a long time to come around, but the light
seems like it=s really come on for him and his last few works
have been very nice.@
Carrying a $550,000 price tag at the sale, Spectacular Jack is
out of an unraced half-sister to 2002 GI Personal Ensign H.
heroine Summer Colony, who Hennig trained on behalf of the
late, great owner/breeder Ned Evans, in addition to the likes of
Grade I winners Raging Fever and Gygistar around that same
time.
The native Ohioan and former D. Wayne Lukas assistant=s
shedrow is starting to look like it did in the 1990s and 2000s
when he had more firepower behind him.
AIt makes you feel good to know you=ve got those prospects
coming,@ Hennig offered. ASomebody asked me the other day
how many Tapits I=ve trained. I said, >I never had any Tapits
before Mr. Adam came along.= Between the loss of Mr. Evans
and Mr. Adam coming in, it=s a familiar feeling that we haven=t
felt in a long time.@
Bill Finley cont. from p1
AOne of the challenges we have always had has been our video
presentation,@ he said. AI don=t want to make excuses but when
they built this place they built it so the sun sets on the
backstretch and the cameras are looking right into the sun and
it=s also a big, undulating course. With over 90% of the wagering
done off-track, we felt we had to do a better job with our
presentation. This year, we will broadcast in high definition,
which we felt was necessary to get the best video presentation
possible. That was the necessary starting point. We=ve also
changed a camera position in the stretch, and improved our
entire graphics presentation, which will be more easy to read
and easy to understand.@
Johnsen has also gone for quantity and quality in the on-air
talent that will be part of the simulcast presentation. Rather
than one talking head, he will have five, all of them zeroing in on
handicapping and race analysis. The team will include former
turf writer Gary West, handicappers Joe Kristufek, Dick Downey
and Kevin (The Cowboy) Cox and announcer John Lies.
AWe have a group of handicappers and presenters on air and
via social media that is second to none,@ Johnsen said.

Corey Johnsen
The takeout on win, place and show bets at Kentucky Downs is16% and exactas are 18.25%. With the recent cuts in the takeoutat Canterbury Downs, Johnsen acknowledges that his track nolonger has the lowest takeout structure in the country. He saidhe would look into lowering it next year but did not know if thatwould be practical because he doesn=t want to cut too muchinto the profits made by the ADWs, OTBs and simulcastingoutlets taking the Kentucky Downs signal. But he believes whenKentucky Downs lowered its takeout two years ago, it led othersto do the same.
AIt=s actually gratifying to me that we no longer have the
lowest takeouts in North America,@ Johnsen said. AOne of our
goals is to affect change throughout the industry. Our major
source of revenue comes from historical horse racing and we
only have a five-day season, so we can do some things and can
take some risks that other tracks can=t and see if they play out in
a way that would benefit all of the
industry and all of the participants.
We are unique in that way.@
In another move, one that is surely a
first in U.S. racing, Kentucky Downs
and the Kentucky HBPA decided to
donate $1.35 million in purse money
to Ellis Park. The idea was to help a
track that feeds horses to the
Kentucky Downs meet and Kentucky
racing in general.
AWhy didn=t we just keep it for
ourselves? This was something done
in conjunction with the Kentucky HBPA and we collectively
decided it was in the best interests of Kentucky horse racing and
Kentucky Downs to do this,@ Johnsen said. AThe stronger the
Kentucky circuit is, the better the horses that we=re going to
attract at Kentucky Downs. I am fully convinced of that.@

Even with the contribution to Ellis, Kentucky Downs purses this
year, when including funds from the Kentucky Thoroughbred
Development Fund, will total $7.8 million. Johnsen says that is
an increase of about 10% from last year. And when it comes to
overnight purses, no track--not even Saratoga--comes close. This
year, maiden special weight races will go for $130,000. On
Saturday=s opening-day card, there is a $145,000 allowance
race. In the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf, the Kentucky Downs
Juvenile, the Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint and the Exacta
Systems Juvenile Fillies, there are four $350,000 stakes on the
Saturday card. The Sept. 10 card includes the $600,000 GIII
Calumet Farm Kentucky Turf Cup, plus three other stakes worth
a combined $900,000.
Johnsen said another goal is to attract the attention of the
graded stakes
committee in hopes
that it will upgrade
these rich races that
usually draw top
quality fields.
AI think we=re right at
tipping point where
the graded stakes
committee will
recognize the fields we
have,@ he said. ALike in
our Turf Sprint, we have Undrafted (Purim) and Regally Ready
(More Than Ready) and both are Grade I winners. The field is
really deep.@
In addition to this Saturday and next, Kentucky Downs will race
on Sept. 8, Sept. 11 and Sept. 15. Florent Geroux was leading
rider last year and looks poised to repeat his title in 2016.
DEL MAR STAKES SCHEDULE RELEASED The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club will stage 14 stakes races
worth a total of $2.05 million during its so-called ABing Crosby
Season@ beginning Nov. 11 and continuing for 15 live dates
through Sunday, Dec. 4.
Fully 10 of the 14 black-type races are graded and are
anchored by a pair of Grade I tests at the end of the meet--the
Dec. 3 Hollywood Derby for sophomore turf males at nine
furlongs; and the Matriarch S. for turf distaffers at a flat mile
Dec. 4.
Owing to recent reductions in handle during the fall meeting,
some races have been canceled altogether while others have
seen their purses
slashed. The $100,000
Desi Arnaz S. for
sprinting 2-year-old
fillies has been
shelved, while the
purses for the GII
Hollywood Turf Cup
(now $200,000), the
GII Seabiscuit H.
($200,000) and GIII Native Diver H. ($100,000) have each been
cut by $50,000. Added to the schedule is the GII Bayakoa H.,
previously staged at Los Alamitos, while the Golden State
Juvenile, Golden State Juvenile Fillies and Goldikova S. have
returned to the Santa Anita schedule.
AWe had to do some tucking and trimming,@ noted Del Mar
Thoroughbred Club=s Executive Vice President for Racing Tom
Robbins. ABut in the end, we=re pretty much offering our
horsemen a very similar lineup to what they=ve seen here the
past two years. We=ll have a big Thanksgiving weekend with six
stakes and close out strongly in the first week of December with
three of our best races.@

Flintshire (pink cap) squeezes through
inside of Inordinate (green) and Roman
Approval (blue/yellow) | Arianna Spadoni

Adam Coglianese
THREE DIAMONDS APPEALS SWORD
DANCER DECISION by Joe Bianca
Three Diamonds Farm has filed an appeal with the New York
State Gaming Commission regarding the Saratoga stewards=
decision to make no change to the order of finish in the GI
Sword Dancer S. Aug. 27.
Juddmonte Farms= Inordinate (Harlan=s Holiday), entered in
the race as a Arabbit@ for heavily favored Flintshire (GB) (Dansili
{GB}), led to the top of the stretch in the race before appearing
to be guided off the rail by jockey Aaron Gryder while tiring,
allowing Flintshire to slip through inside of him. That move
impeded Three Diamonds= runner Roman Approval (Roman
Ruler) around the quarter pole, forcing rider Florent Geroux to
take up sharply. Flintshire went on to win, while Inordinate
finished fifth, a half-length in front of Roman Approval in sixth.
Mike Maker, Roman Approval=s trainer, lodged an objection, but
the foul claim was dismissed by the stewards.
Jordan Wycoff of
Three Diamonds Farm
justified the appeal by
pointing to two New
York racing statutes
that he says Gryder was
in violation of: Rule
4035.4, which requires
a jockey to ride solely
with the purpose of
winning the race, and
Rule 4035 (2) (a), which
prohibits careless riding.
AYou can=t say Aaron was riding to win this race,@ Wycoff told
the TDN. AIf a rider is careless, he=s supposed to be taken down. I
stopped it when we were watching at home, he grabbed his
right rein and looked back to his left. By definition, that=s
careless. He never even looked at Roman. He bumped him first,
then looked back. When these horses start backing up, you=re
supposed to be looking to see if it=s safe, not trying to open up
the rail. We could=ve clipped heels and taken the whole field
down with us.@
Wycoff noted that the rules of New York racing stipulate that
Flintshire, as an uncoupled entrymate of Inordinate, could have
been disqualified for that one=s transgressions, but insists that is
not the goal of this appeal.
AI don=t think that should happen,@ Wycoff said of a potential
Flintshire disqualification. AI think he wins every time you run
that race. It=s not about that. Inordinate wasn=t ridden to win the
race. It=s a $10,000 difference (between the payout for fifth and
sixth-place). It=s mind-boggling that the stewards didn=t see it
the way a lot of people saw it.@
Wycoff said the three jockeys involved were called by the
stewards to discuss the events in the Sword Dancer, but no
claim of foul was made.
AIt=s tough for a jockey to file an objection against Juddmonte
and Chad Brown,@ Wycoff said. ABy nature, it=s just not good for
business.@
Wycoff said Three Diamonds has not yet heard back from
NYRA or the NYSGC as to their appeal.
SPECIAL RISK TO TRY SPINAWAY On a sloppy Sunday afternoon two summers ago, Condo
Commando (Tiz Wonderful) gave trainer Rudy Rodriguez the
first Grade I victory of his training career in the GI Spinaway S.
Though only a maiden, but placed in her two trips to the post to
date, Special Risk (Eskendereya) will be given a shot against
some of Saratoga=s fleetest juvenile fillies in the 2016 renewal
Saturday afternoon.
Owned in partnership by Michael Dubb and The Elkstone
Group--who also campaigned Condo Commando--and Sol
Kumin=s Head of Plains Partners,
Special Risk outran debut odds of
15-1 to finish a good third at
Belmont Park May 18 and bridged
most of a seven-length deficit in
the final furlong of a July 22 Spa
maiden before finishing second by
a half-length behind the front-
running Bowie (Malibu Moon).
"We're just taking a chance. She
looks like she wants to go the
distance so that's going to be a
plus, but the race is going to be
tough," Rodriguez said. "We've
just got to hope that she improves a little bit and is competitive.
There's a couple horses in there that look like they're pretty fast,
so hopefully they hook up and go :21 and :44 [seconds] and
maybe we can sit behind and pick up some of the pieces."
Special Risk drew gate two and will be ridden by Joel Rosario.
"She looks like she's coming into the race good, and the post is
good,@ Rodriguez commented. AShe drew on the inside and she
doesn't have much speed. She's going to be sitting there and she
doesn't have to take back so maybe she'll be a little closer than
drawing on the outside and having to save ground. Hopefully we
can pick up a check. If we win, I'm not going to get mad.@

SUMMER REVOLUTION TO STRETCH OUT Summer Revolution (Summer Bird), who suffered the first lossof his young career when a solid fourth behind >TDN Rising Star=Drefong (Gio Ponti) in the GI Ketel One King=s Bishop S. Aug. 27,will try a route of ground for the first time in the GI PennsylvaniaDerby at Parx Racing in suburban Philadelphia Sept. 24. "He came out of the race very good, so I'm going to take iteasy with him," he said. "He looks very good, very happy. Ithought he ran a good race considering the race he ran beforewas a huge race. We're going to take a look at the PennsylvaniaDerby. I think he can stretch out. We're going to take each raceas it comes and hopefully he'll run good over there.@ Summer Revolution returned $30 to his backers when rompingby 7 1/4 lengths at first asking at Belmont Park on IndependenceDay and proved that effort was no fluke with a smart three-length allowance success at Saratoga Aug. 6. After briefly flirtingwith the idea of a start in the GI Travers S., trainer RudyRodriguez and owner Jeff Drown elected the King=s Bishop andthe colt attended the modest early pace before staying on wellto be fourth, beaten four lengths. "Right now I don't have any regrets about running him,@Rodriguez offered. AHe looks like he came back good; the onlyregret is that we didn't win the race," Rodriguez said. "Thewinner ran a big race. I don't think he embarrassed himself. Hegot a little tired. For a minute it looked like we were going to besecond, but he ran good." A $40,000 Keeneland September yearling turned $90,000 OBSApril juvenile, Summer Revolution has earned $126,000 to date.

JOHN E. CASSE
My name is John E. Casse and many people around Ocala,
Florida, might tell you that my father Norman Casse was "OBS."
But I am here to tell you that he was
not....Tom Chiota was. Tom was at
OBS day in and day out working and
caring for the Ocala Breeders' Sales
Company for more than 25 years.
Without Tom Chiota, the Ocala
Breeders= Sales Company would not
be where it is today, which is known
as the pre eminent Thoroughbred
institution to buy a training horse. I
know and believe this in my heart.
Let's not get too caught up in this
accomplishment because that was not
the ultimate goal to him or the men who started OBS. What
meant everything to Tom and my father and Harry Mangurian
and Hilmer Schmidt and all of those pioneers was that Florida
and Ocala horsemen had something that they could be proud of,
and I am quite confident that they are. Thank you Lorraine,
Nicole and all of Tom's family for sharing him with us. God Bless
and Godspeed, Tom.
Sincerely,
John E. Casse

TDN=s Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato will give their best bet of the day
for every Friday, Saturday and Sunday card of the Saratoga meet, and bet
$50 Win/Place on their selection. In the case of a scratch, an alternate pick
will be posted on Twitter. The handicapper who has accrued the biggest
bankroll through Sept. 3 wins.
SS: Last Sunday=s Result - Absolutely brutal beat with C d=Cat,
who sat the exact trip I was looking for and just got tagged on
the line to lose by a nose in a painful bobber at 7-1... Another
great job by DiDonato, who seems to do nothing but tout live
firsters at overlays in this contest as well as out of town on
Twitter... Only three races left to go--time to go bomb hunting.
Total: $1,117.50.
Friday, Race 10, Md40k - Was very tempted to go with
Luckystrikedelcoco a bit earlier on the card, but will take a big
swing for the fences with another Joe Sharp trainee fresh off the
heels of C d=Cat=s big effort last weekend. It hasn=t really
happened yet this meet, but the inner turf course at the Spa can
produce some pretty hefty payouts on longshot frontrunners in
races going at or around this distance. The speedy Bermuda
Triangle returns to grass and adds blinkers in his first start off
the claim after setting a hot pace in a six-furlong dirt sprint here
back in late July. His lone attempt at this level going seven
furlongs on grass at Belmont was pretty solid. He finished up
sneaky good and was awfully rank in the early stages while
racing under cover. Seeing out this distance is an obvious
concern, but here=s hoping he gets brave on a clear lead at a big
price. Selection: #8 Bermuda Triangle (20-1).
BD: Last Sunday=s Result - Sky Gesture took a little tote support,
went off at 5.7-1 and led box to wire to keep our success with
the 2-year-olds going. Meanwhile, that was just a gross beat for
Steve. Contest or no contest, was rooting hard for that one to go
the other way. Three more races to dodge a big one from him--
this thing=s certainly not over yet. Total: $2070.
Friday, Race 6, MSW - I knew I wanted to pick someone in this
race, but I probably scrolled through pedigree reports, watched
sales breezes and looked at trainer stats for a good hour before
just deciding to throw a dart and move on. There are strong
cases to be made for and against a number of runners in this
race, and in the end I went with the pure pedigree play: Happy
Motoring. She=s a half to GII Breeders= Cup Turf Sprint and GI
Nearctic S. winner Regally Ready, and hails from an old but very
productive family of French sprinter/milers. Trainer Gary
Contessa and owner Lee Pokoik have already connected with a
winning debutante at the meet, and she seems to have shown
some speed in two grass blowouts across the street. Selection:
#1 Happy Motoring (12-1).

It was hardly an easy trip for >TDN Rising Star= Coasted, but the
Treadway Racing Stable colorbearer got the job done anyway,
squeaking through a narrow gap at the fence inside the final 100
yards to collect the P. G. Johnson S. at Saratoga for her first
stakes victory Thursday. Fifth sprinting over the Belmont main
when unveiled July 2, the $210,000 KEESEP yearling drubbed
her rivals over course and distance by six lengths in her turf bow
Aug. 7 en route to >Rising Stardom=. Bet down to 3-5, the bay sat
second last against the fence, as longshot Mo Promise (Uncle
Mo) showed the way through fairly easy splits of :24.80 and
:49.86. In the meantime, Coasted made steady progress up the
inner until the head of the lane where she lacked racing room. It
appeared Coasted would remain hemmed in against the pine
until too late, but the tiring Mo Promise moved out just enough
to let Coasted through. She fought off the rallying Noble Promise
(More Than Ready) in the shadow of the wire to score
comfortably. Majestic Bonnie (Majestic Warrior) completed the
trifecta. Coasted is the sixth stakes winner for her sophomore
sire (by Tiznow).
"The whole race I was having minor heart attacks all the way
around,@ said winning trainer Leah Gyarmati. AFrom where we
were, to watching the times, where we were on the inside, and
where we were in relation to the front runner ... it was kind of
exciting. It's pretty cool to see her do that, because we're going
to need to do all that going forward to these bigger races with
more horses and traffic trouble. It's nice to know you have a
bold horse who can bull her way through. I think probably the
[$200,000 GIII] Miss Grillo [at Belmont Park Oct. 2,], then
hopefully the Breeders' Cup; obviously a lot depends on how she
comes out of the race."

The Claiborne Farm Visitor Center=s grand opening will
commence at a Paris Bourbon County Chamber of Commerce
ribbon cutting ceremony held out at the visitor center Sept. 15
at noon, Claiborne=s Allison Bishop told the TDN Wednesday.
AThe idea came about a
couple of years ago really,
but we knew it wasn=t
feasible until just this
year,@ said Bishop,
daughter of former
Claiborne Farm helmsman
Seth Hancock and sister to
current head Walker

really understand the
purpose of gaining more fans and retaining the current ones,
especially after the report came out about horse racing [being in]
the state that it was in. This winter, we put the plan into action.@
Already open in a limited capacity, the visitor center will
operate 9:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. every day farm tours run. It will
be closed during the first week of the Keeneland September
Sale, but will re-open
beginning the following
Monday, Sept. 19. It will
also be closed during the
Keeneland November
Sale, Thanksgiving and
Christmas.
AWe thought this would
be a nice addition to our
farm tours,@ Bishop
continued. AWe=ve been
giving tours for about 30 years or so, but it was a whole new
approach to look at the visitor expansion. Really they [the fans]
are the ones who keep our game going.@ Cont. p6

Only a maiden entering this contest, Spring Tempest was a
debut second to subsequent SW Conquest Vivi (Court Vision)
here June 12 and, after a rough start, ran third to Let It Ride
Mom (Into Mischief) and Tapa Tapa Tapa (Tapit) in a local affair
July 16. She pressed the early pace, but tired to fourth in her
longest start to date behind the latter going seven furlongs Aug.
27. Positioned in midpack while perched three deep behind a
rapid early tempo, Spring Tempest made her bid for the lead
widest of all up the center of the track turning into the lane. It
took the length of the stretch, but she found the front in the
dying strides to get off the
mark and add some black-
type to her resume, with a
well-timed ride under Patrick
Husbands. AShe went through
the ring and she was really
athletic looking,@ recalled
trainer and co-owner Steve
Owens. AAnd we were looking
for something to purchase to
run in the Yearling Sales S.
That=s the only reason we purchased her. She has tried every
start.@ Her dam Hold the Sugar foaled a filly by Oxbow in 2015
and a colt by Data Link this year. From the same family as GSW
& GISP Haunting (Kris S.), she was later covered by Congrats. Click

BREEDERS’ EDITION
OLG Simcoe S. Cont.
Only a head behind the
reopposing Pachi Cruze
(Valid N Bold) in the
restricted Frost King S. in
his career bow over this
strip June 26,
Lokinforpursemonee
donned cap and gown in
the July 27 Victoria S. at
this venue last out July 17.
Heavily favored to repeat,
the son of Lady Angela S. heroine Anne=s Purse was bumped at
the break and loitered at the rear of the field for the backstretch
run. He inched into contention through a half-mile in :46.48,
split horses in midstretch and narrowly snatched the win from
rival Pachi Cruze in the shadow of the wire. AHe=s been a
dynamic little horse,@ said conditioner John Ross. ATrains well in
the mornings and does all the things good horses do. You can
race him from behind and he goes through tight situations in the
race and that=s what a classy horse does. We=re thrilled to have
him in the barn.@ Anne=s Purse foaled a filly and a colt, both by
Stormy Atlantic, in 2015 and 2016, respectively. She visited Sky
Mesa this spring. Click for the Equibase.com chart or VIDEO,
