Santa Claus has garaged his sleigh and some of us are still feeling the after effects of singing “Auld Lang Syne” a little too boisterously a few evenings back. Now that the holidays are behind us and we’ve dodged the bullet on the whole MayanApocalypse-thing, it’s time to set our sights on an exciting new year. 2013 glistens before us like a fresh, ocean-brightSteelhead and for us here, it’s never been a more exciting time to be a part of the Big R family. Patagonia is releasing a new and improved line of fly fishing gear that’s sure to give both Simms and Korkers a run for their money. Echo Rods and Reels are on the racks and Rising Tools and Spirit River Tying Materials are on the pegs. Business at the Omak and Ponderay shops has never been better, and we’ve got more trips and excursions scheduled this year that we can shake our two handed rods at. All of which will be reported and brought to you through this, our humble eMagazine - so stay tuned.

Fun Fact:The so-called “Mayan calendar” we’ve all seen recently on t-shirts and goofy Facebook posts is actually not a calendar atall, and it has nothing to do with the Mayan. It’s called the Sun Stone. The gruesome fella you see in the middle of the concen-tric circles represents the Aztec sun god Tonatiuh. It was carved to comemmorate the ascension of the Aztec ruler Itzcoatl about 500 years after the Mayan civilization began to fall apart. So if anything, it’s more like a commemorative plate.

The selection of flies to match the hatch during our winter months is conveniently limited to one major insect; the midge. While inconve-niently diminutive in size (18-24), they are biometrically sufficient in volume for feeding trout. There are midges by the billions in all stages and trout see enough of them to put them high on the dietary list. Larva, pupa, emergers and adults are eaten by hungry fish. When a big midge hatch occurs, adults often form mating clusters. This provides trout with an opportunity to get multiple adults in a single gulp. Beyond the midge, nutrient rich Tailwaters such as the Missouri River are loaded with aquatic invertebrates. We call these critters scuds and sow bugs. Scuds and sow bugs are eaten by trout all year, but are particularly important during the winter months, when there are no other significant hatches beyond the midge. For some reason, Missouri River fish love pink flies with orange bead heads. You can’t go wrong fish-ing with a Fire Bead Soft Hackle Ray Charles. Is it a scud, sow bug or possibly an egg? Only the fish know when they eat it, and they eat it.

Along with scuds and sow bugs, aquatic annelid worms are present and recognized by trout as food. The popular San Juan Worm is one of the most productive patterns of all time. Red, Orange, Pink, Tan, Brown, Black and Purple all catch fish, but Red is the all time leader.

How about streamers? Sculpins, various minnows, juvenile trout, whitefish, suckers and leaches are targets of opportunity providing a larger protein package then the midge. Swing a streamer past a lethargic fish who has been living on nothing but tiny stuff and you just might tempt an eat. Streamers sometimes take some commitment to fish, but they can produce the larger and more aggressive fish that just might make your winter day truly special.

nWhen compared to the sometimes complex hatches of multiple insects with multiple stages that are in play during the summertime, winter fish-ing is pretty simple. The complexities come into play when one is trying to dress warm and keep appendages and lines from freezing. Along with your fly box, you might want to add a thermos of something hot, a flask of something tasty, some hand and foot warmers and possibly an external heat source.

When winter fly fishing slows down, be sure to use the hatch charts to plan your hatches when sitting at the fly tying bench. Plan to tie patterns that can be used now and as soon as March. Hatch charts can help you by maximizing your time and planning ahead. There’s no need to be tying hoppers, ants, or beetles in January when these terrestrial patterns are not effective until late summer. I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with tying these patterns now, it’s just that I’d rather prepare myself now for hatches that will occur in sequential order. Tie an arsenal of BWO nymphs, emergers, adults, and spinners and save yourself a little extra money and time when it’s time to hit the hatch. Or tie some Skwala nymph and dries if you plan on fishing this stonefly hatch on the Bitteroot river in Hamilton Montana early in March. Thinking this way will not only keep things simple, but will help you focus and prepare you for strategizing how you will attack each hatch. Start by gathering a few materials to tie some of the patterns you’ll need on the river now. The list below will help you to get started. Think pink, and flashy for worms, scuds and sows. Think simple and use mimimalism when tying midge larva, pupa, emergers and dries. And last but not least, have fun and be creative. There is no right or wrong way to tie your own flies. Fish don’t always care so why should you? The best feeling is catching a fat rainbow or brown on a simple size 22 zebra midge that took you about 1-2 minutes to tie in your own home, with your own tools, at your own bench, with your own hands. There’s nothing more rewarding when you can look at that fish in the eyes and tell him that you fooled him with your own fly.

The UVR spectrum is extremely common in the animal/insect world. This is how bees find flowers and mayflies find mates. While many male species exhibit UVR to attract mates or to feed, many females exhibit less UVR to camouflage themselves and their young. UVR is abundant in plankton, algae, baitfish, invertebrates & similar species. UV sensitive cones in the eyes of fish allow them to see in much greater detail in adverse water and light conditions. While visible light is lost in red at approximately 10 feet and orange at 25’…UVR and UVF light can penetrate up to 150 feet depending on water clarity. The RODS in a trout eyes do not allow them much sight in low light periods of dawn and dusk. However, UV sensitive CONES in their eyes do allow fish to see more details and at greater depths. Perhaps this is why some species prefer to feed at night. Bass anglers have known about UVR and UVF which is utilized on many of their baits and lures. Our special UVEM™ dye processes on feathers and furs add more UVR by increasing its electron mobility, its luminescence and overall light spectrum. The UVEM™ is high in reflectivity and has diffusing properties, which the animal world identifies and exploits. With a special UV light held behind a material, the lighter shades (red and above) will glow ever so slightly. A better way of saying this is that Spirit River’s fluorescent materi-als “scream” at you and the UVEM™ materials “whisper” to you.

Most humans can perceive only a small section of the Light Spectrum. This is called the Visible Spectrum, or VS, which runs between about 400 to 700 nanometers Below the VS light spectrum is the Ultra Violet spec-trum. There are 2 types. One is a UV Reflective Light or UVR and the other is UV Fluorescence or UVF. UVR are the shorter wave lengths the human eye does not usually perceive. These are what we are primarily concerned with. UVR reflects through a material or is emit-ted by the species and cannot readily be seen by the human eye unless very expensive equipment is used. UVF are what we all know as the usual florescent tying materials which absorb light and will emerge back out in a longer wave length we can see as brighter or will radiate under a black light.

Many factors determine the vulnerability of the trout during a hatch on a river, lake or stream. Among the most discussed are exact size and color of the natu-ral insects. Other criteria to consider are presentation, masking human odors, and the use of natural materials.At Nature's Spirit, they have taken as many of the above aspects as possible and incorporated them into the finest materials available. In 2004/05 Dylan Rothwell started RISING. Previous work with Vortex Backpacks and William Joseph had given him con-fidence in his own design skills, as well as a love for the out-door recreation market. From the beginning, the focus at Rising was to design and build products that would improve the fishing experience - be that on the water, on the road, at the tying table, or chilling by the campfire.

Our first products shipped in Jan 2005, and we continued to march to our drummer for four more years. In 2009 we entered into an exclusive distribution deal with Umpqua Feather Merchants. As the largest manufacturer of flies in the world, they were a natural partner for us: they were large, well funded, well staffed and had room in their large ware-house – we were small, cash strapped, and had run out of room in our basement. The arrangement worked well for both companies – but in summer of 2012 we made the decision to go our separate ways.

As of the summer of 2012 we are now back flying solo, and marching to our own beat (which is reggae oriented friends). We did so because we have re-committed to manufacturing as many of our designs in house as is feasible. In house pro-duction required new machines, new warehouse, and new partners.. We’ve expanded the ranks with incredibly diverse talent – Mickey, Lance, Robin, Rancher, Fischer, Whalen, and Erin to name the most prominent.
