hi i’m kristen i’m Isaac & i’m haas & we are proud to present to you kansas city’s big (ROMAN) picnic
haas: as a group, we decided to embrace the roman luxury exhibit and provide a historical experience at the picnic
isaac: here are some visual elements we were considering when we were brainstorming the concept we looked at things like mosaics and textures, symbols, colors, and foliage representing Roman luxury

haas: our keywords are REGAL, MEMORABLE, ENGAGING
kristen: we want to provide interest, promote discovery, and help to elevate the already memorable experience of the big picnic

isaac: we also decided to stick with Museo Slab and Scala because they work well with the rest of the elements we have createdthe color schemes are colors that complement the brand colors for the Big Picnic
Haas: this is a drawing reflecting the rendering style for the direction of the icon and navigation system. a bold, modern reinterpretation of Roman symbols based on roman Gods.
haas: these greco-roman maps inspired the line work and orientation of the physical map concept

Kristen: our user experience has five main components - beginning with the map and riddle cards corresponding to each sculpture. the riddle cards are all connected with mosaic imagery on the backside for the participant to color in.
Haas: once the participant has solved the riddle and found the corresponding sculpture, they will be able to color in the back of the mosaic with the number of the color at that station and the tenant will stamp their card. once all four stations are complete, the mosaic will be mostly colored in and the user can get their rewards.
Isaac: after the person has had their riddle cards stamped at each location they can redeem prizes at the art tent (indicated on map) ( bubbles, roman coins, stickers/temporary tattoos)
the Riddle cards can be recycled after they are redeemed to reduce print costs and save the trees
W H A T A M I ?
I have many feathers to help me fly.
I have a body and head, but I’m not alive.
It is your strength which determines how far I go.
You can hold me in your hand, but I’m never thrown.
kristen: here is an example of one of the riddles and the format of the riddle card we originally had and what the map looked like inside of the pamphlet

user testing day
HAAS:User testing day went really well. the families really liked the them and aesthetic of our map. Some of our suggestions were to:
-Add a directional compass-Add the pathway dots on the legend so it is clear that they represent the paths-Add more street names especially where the parking garage is-On the back of the riddle cards add textures that correlate to the sculptures-Make the riddle cards one long accordion fold so they are less likely to fly away-Get rid of the cuts halfway down the paper, they made the whole piece easier to rip. -Some of the riddles were a little easier while one (ferment) may have been too challenging. -One family especially wanted the riddles to include more of the nelson lawn. Maybe sending them on a scavenger hunt all around the lawn until they reach the final four spotlight sculptures-One family said the map was too artistic, time to bring back in more design-They also suggested using a thinner stock paper so there did not need to be any cuts but all folds. -Suggested using mosaics as an activity. Maybe they get pieces to the mosaic at each station then they can put them all together at the end.
We refined these details and redid our map and navigation system.

Here it is in real life.
My arms in the sky
are not l iving things
I don’t sway in the wind
or grow endlessly -OR- (green leaves)
Please call me Dendroid

There’s one way out

See if you
can get out again
Inside glass walls
you might get lost
and cross the path

I look ver y different

I have four legs

You can picture me
as you count to sleep
My sound is a bleat
because I ’m a _ _ _ _ _
I have many feathers

I have a body and head

KRISTEN
This is how we decided to lay our riddle cards out so they wouldn’t blow away. The families enjoyed the riddles. We added a texture of each sculpture on the page for a visual element so that kids that couldn’t read yet could still be involved. This also adds another level of interaction with the sculptures to keep people there for a bit longer with the color by number system. Each station could have a certain colored pencil with the end result being the near completion of the mosaic and the ability to go redeem the rewards.
I look very different without my coat I have four legs but I’m not a goat You can picture me as you count to sleep My sound is a bleat because I’m a _____

HAASThese are the rewards. The gold coins and the bubbles went over very well during user testing day. people of all ages seem to love bubbles.
kristen: The ideas we had for rewards for exploring the sculpture garden are replicas of roman coins, bubbles in gold containers and a gold laurel head piece. these things can be purchased in bulk. the laurel head piece could be made from paper or gold foil. Visitors can take a photo with a toga sheet and their newly acquired laurel and upload to instagram another thought we had was to have the attendees dress in togas to enrich the experience.
For a price example: It would be about 250.00 to purchase 20,000 coins (possibly less from wholesale) which provides 5000 people with 4-5 coins each. A more affordable option for a final reward could be a DIY laurel head piece station to give people the option to customize their own and take photos to provide a more memorable experience.
