Gingerbread VillageThe Guild’s 2016 holiday season kicked off December 5 with the always popular Gingerbread Village decorating event, where an estimated 130 children expressed their creativity on the walls of their personal gingerbread houses. Santa grinned his way from table to table, offering high fives and ho-ho-hos, as dozens of volunteers—members of the BHLH Loma Linda Guild—mingled with the kids, making sure they had plenty of candies and frosting to decorate the colorful, miniature abodes.

Fall into Reading: A respite for young patients by James Ponder

Approximately 35 to 40 pediatric patients participated in the annual Fall into Reading event, held Monday, September 19. Assisted by more than a dozen guild members and volunteers, the event has a three-fold purpose: • First, it gives hospitalized children an opportunity to socialize with other kids

while playing games that focus on the importance of words and reading. • Second, it provides a respite from the world of doctors and nurses,

medications and treatments. • Third, it encourages a lifelong love of reading by allowing each child to select

a book to keep from a large and colorful assortment of seasonal titles.

Thanks to a gift of instant photography equipment from board member Don Finch, each participant received their own color portrait taken at the scene.

Former LLUCH patient and piano sensation Ben Phipatanakul (pictured) performed at Loma Linda Guild’s annual membership luncheon, held Wednesday, February 1 at Redlands Country Club. Ten-year-old Ben and his twin sister Emma were born at LLUCH. Unfortunately, Ben had a duplication cyst in his bowel and required surgery the very next day. After spending his first two weeks of life in the NICU, Ben reunited with his family at home. Ben was honored to play the piano for the guild that supports the hospital that gave him a head start.

The theme of this year’s luncheon, “Healing One Heart at a Time,” underscored the role the guild plays in supporting the life-saving work of LLUCH. Ben’s father, Wes Phipatanakul, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at LLU Health, and Donald Moores, MD (pictured)—who performed Ben’s live-saving surgery—discussed the importance of the hospital in serving the needs of children from the Inland Empire and Desert regions.

According to Lynn Sleeth, who became president of the guild on January 1, the annual luncheon represents an opportunity for interested parties to meet the officers and members of the guild, learn about their charitable activities on behalf of vulnerable children, and explore different avenues of involvement and support. “We look forward to this every year because it allows us to share some of the needs of the children of our community and talk about what the guild is doing to provide for them,” Sleeth observed.

Guild ushers in the Christmas spirit with slate of holiday activities by James Ponder and Kara Watkins

See more photos and watch a video of KCAL Channel 9’s news coverage.

Carols in the LobbyAs they have for the last 10 years, members of the BLHL Loma Linda Guild brought a joyful mix of Christmas music and inspiration to LLUCH patients during the Carols in the Lobby program on December 12. Featuring elements of slapstick comedy as well as sublime musical artistry, performances included musical comedy sketches by area pastors Mark Holm, Roy Ice, Aaron Lay and Doug Mace, and carols performed by talented young vocalists and musicians, including vocal group Lioness, singer James Naibaho, pianist Jared Wareham, sibling piano duo Gian and Keziah Villlanueva, singer Mirana Mattson, and harpists Claire Elias and Emily Linlo (pictured).

Trees of HopeThe 2016 Trees of Hope campaign raised $22,000 to fund projects and equipment to benefit the LLU Children’s Hospital. The generosity of donors allowed more than 160 angels—ranging from small ornaments to large tree toppers and each in honor or memory of a cherished someone to be hung on Christmas trees in the LLUCH lobby. Special thanks to Julie Cutler for creating another stunning treescape for us all to enjoy throughout the holiday season, and to Home Depot for donating our new trees, which will serve beautifully as Trees of Hope for many years to come.
