Omar Hoblos 5/18/2015 Big Data Revolution After reading the article, I am definitely more aware of this big data revolution currently taking place in today’s healthcare market. Although it is a revolution in other industries, such as consumer markets to target trends to increase profit margins, the most important and global impact of big data is healthcare. Before reading this article, I did not understand how all these private companies could have access to such large patient files especially with the stressed importance of patient privacy in the medical field. I was very surprised by the government backing of big data and granting access to patient files to discover trends. A big focus of big data is definitely making patient records as private as possible, removing any personal information. I can only imagine how tedious this will be if there is not a software that is able to do this automatically. It is clear how revolutionary this could be though for the healthcare industry that the government is willing to grant access immediately and try to make regulations after the fact. While doctors are very trusted in society to make the right decision, they are only human and make mistakes just as often as they solve problems. There is a very high percentage of deaths caused by misdiagnosis of patients by doctors. If doctors had a protocol to follow along with their personal knowledge and experience, the chances of a proper diagnosis would certainly increase. Studying trends in thousands of patients with similar conditions will help physicians and other healthcare associates to discover patterns in treatments and perhaps mistakes.
