David is responsible for managing Standard Chartered Bank’s global market data expenditure.  David has over 20 years experience in Finance and Banking technology, having previously worked for Nomura, Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs. At Standard Chartered, David has transformed Market Data from being a support function into a virtual business group which is almost entirely recharged back to active users on a month to month basis.  Changing Market Data into a business team required an overhaul of the financial recharge systems and processes and the implementation of a centralized cost management and MIS system.  The next phase of this transformation will be providing the users with ‘Market Data as a Service’ via an integrated portal.

Steps toward a Traders personal P&L

Most large financial organizations struggle to really be sure which areas of the business are most profitable.   The old 80/20 rule often applies, when it is carefully analysed 20% of the traders or groups generate 80% of the profits.   Cost Centre accounting provides one view, but significant expenses are often hidden at a group level, and technology costs in particular are often reallocated using arbitrary measures.   To understand whether an individual trader or team are in the red or black it is necessary to allocate costs at a much more granular and precise level than is standard practice. As a result of the current market and regulatory pressures the financial industry is inevitably heading to a type of personal P&L.

David DaviesGlobal Head of Market Data Control,Standard Chartered Bank

Mr. Clarkson is a developer and designer who has been working in the algorithmic trading space since 2005.   He has led teams at DeutscheBank and J.P. Morgan developing high-performance, soft realtime, event-driven applications in the proprietary trading space.  Prior to that, he was a consultant at ThoughtWorks, implementing high-end enterprise applications and training Agile development techniques for some of the world's top companies.

Algorithmic Trading and Distributed Computing Expert

The emergence of new business models which depend on the collection and processing of massive quantities of data

in near-real time on a near 24-hour basis has outpaced the capabilities of traditional application and infrastructure architectures.  To solve this problem, large web firms have developed a "Modern" approach to system design and the organisational structure required to support them.  These models will increasingly become of greater importance in all industry, as companies look to build systems that can unlock the potential of the data in their enterprise and on the Internet. In this talk, Matt will cover topics including: application architectures for massively parallel systems, server virtualisation, distributed databases, as well as the key role of build and testing process automation and the structure of the IT organisation of the future which will be required to support these systems.

To take advantage of the big data asset of a world class eCommerce company that produces over 150TB of data every day from both desktop and mobile devices, and to apply the appropirate technical solutions to address the horizontal needs of data and analytics across different functional business units worldwide, eBay's global data and analytics platform team applied product discovery and development approaches at the conjunction of big data technical challenges, usability frictions and value proposition implications, to create the big data product solutions that 'activate' the data and deliver insights to the users.

David Zhao, Senior Product Manager of eBay's global data and analytics platform, and Guest Lecturer at School of Software Engineering of Tongji University.
