Tips and Notes:

Removing Paper: After I paper piece my blocks, I place a small ruler along the sewing line and, using the back of a seam ripper (the smooth side), score the paper along the seam. The paper tears away easily with very few pieces to pick out.

A Quilter

I am a quilter and my life is in pieces. I prefer to live in my sewing room. However, I do occasionally come out for a glass of wine or a shopping spree. My stash is magical – no matter how much I sew, the fabric keeps growing. I have a friend who shops with me and she is a good friend in that she helps me hide it when I get home. Although my house does not have a walk-in closet, I have a fabric vault. I'm the gal sitting in the car in the parking lot working on a quilt project while waiting for the husband to come out of Home Depot. I'm the mom at the top of the bleachers working on yet another little applique block while the kiddos warm up for the game. Yep, it's the same project I was working on last year. I must admit that sometimes, when people my artistic zone, they confuse it with clutter. Also, my work uniform is often confused with pajamas. Although, my organizational skills are not the best, the sum of mycreativity is equal to greater than the mess left behind. Quilting keeps my hands busy, my mind clam, my heart happy and my family warm. Enjoy sewing.

Tip Tuesday: How to Piece a Quilt with Curves By Carrie Sisk

Most of us have struggled with sewing curves and rightfully so.

It’s so much easier to sew straight seams! But, piecing curves opens up a world of quilting

opportunities that, as quilters, we should take advantage of. Piecing curves can be a challenge,

but it doesn’t have to be! Not when there are so many great quilting tips on how to piece a quilt

with curves available to you.

There are so many helpful tips, tricks and quilting notions available to you that make piecing

curves so much easier! The Curved Seam Template Set, 9″ Curved Seam Template

Set and Jumbo Curved Seam Template Set are a few of the useful quilting tools to have on

hand when piecing quilts like String of Pearls.

Piecing curves in a Drunkard’s Path quilt block starts with aligning the center of the curves.

Take a look at the quilting tutorial below to get an idea of what this means.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIYgyxReeRI

Quilt patterns that are perfect for using this technique include Beach Ball

Bounce, Curvalicious, and Dazzled. The extended free quilting video tutorial, Sew Easy:

Piecing Curves, walks you through each step of the process. The trusty Fons & Porter staff

gives you all of the tips you need to succeed!

Quilter Angela Pingel has perfected the art of curved piecing with an entire book devoted to

quilts featuring the Drunkard’s Path quilt block and a quilting video tutorial illustrating how to

successfully piece those quilts. Here are a few tips straight from Angela:

Sewing curves quickly and simply is definitely doable, but some mishaps can occur. Here are

three of the most common problems and the solutions for fixing them.

Big Cypress Whispers

To prevent stretching in the first place, be gentler with your handling of the curved pieces.

Since the curve on both pieces exposes the bias of the fabric, the pieces are vulnerable to

stretching. This can happen when cutting, sewing, or pressing or a combination of all three. Try

to determine at what point in the process you are putting the most stress on the bias. Also note

that some fabrics are more easily stretched than others, even though you are using the same

technique to sew them. Some can make you feel like a rock star seamstress, and others make

you want to throw in the towel.

There’s plenty more where that came from! Learn more about Angela’s book and quilting

video tutorial and get more Problem Solving Tips from Angela Pingel for common problems

when sewing curves.

If you’ve never pieced with curves before or are frustrated when you sit down at your sewing

machine to piece a quilt with curves, let us help! Take advantage of the tools and quilting video

tutorials we have available for you. It makes for a happier quilter and a beautiful quilt.
