A MESSAGE FROM BCR PRESIDENT & EDITOR

Jamie Veronica

Big Cat Rescue, one of the world’s most effective accredited sanctuaries for exotic cats, is a leading advocate in ending the abuse of captive big cats and saving wild cats from extinction. We are home to over 70 lions, tigers, bobcats, cougars, servals and other species of exotic cats, most of whom have been abandoned, abused, orphaned, saved from the fur trade, or retired from performing acts.

The sanctuary, located on 67 acres in the Citrus Park area of north Tampa, was founded in 1992 and is a 501c3 charity.

Big Cat Rescue is accredited by the Global Federation of Sanctuaries, certified by Independent Charities of America as a “Best in America Charity”, rated 4 Stars by Charity Navigator, and is part of a global coalition including HSUS, IFAW, WWF, GFAS, Born Free and other animal protection groups working together to end big cat abuse.

Summer is upon us and we are seeing record temperatures here at the sanctuary. Combine that with the extreme lack of rain and Big Cat Rescue is feeling more like a desert than a tropical paradise.

On the upside summer brings us more interns and thanks to these Big Cat Rescuers we are getting a lot of really important projects completed. Dozens of enclosures have been overhauled, cleaned, and planted with grass.

Check out our newest rescue on the following page. Two bobcats,

Lakota and Sioux were saved from deplorable conditions following the closure of a small road side zoo.

On the cover of this issue of the Big Cat Times is the majestic Mickey. Read his rescue story on page 24.

The new rehab enclosures are fantastic. So far we have hosted two residents; recently released Wyeth and currently in rehab Nova. This paw-some new space provides these native cats with everything they need to recover and prepare for release back into the wild.

The Wildcat Walkabout is nearing and we could not be more excited about the conservation projects this year's event will benefit. Be sure to purr-chase your tickets soon. This fun event always sells out.

There is a new easy way to contact your representative and request their support for the most important piece of big cat legislation ever. Check it out on page 6. Just a minute of your time will make a world of difference to the big cats.

ROAD SIDE ZOO SHUT DOWN

BOBCAT DUO RESCUED

A small road side zoo in the rural outskirts of Wilmur Alabama was home to a handful of exotic animals. The zoo was founded in 1994 and was registered as a non-profit organization.

Fast forward 22 years and the Mobile County Animal Shelter would be tasked with finding homes for all of the zoo residents.

In November of 2016 the USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) ordered the zoo to be shut down due to repeated animal

welfare violations. In a 28-page ruling, the judge listed repeated failures by the zoo owner and his staff to provide adequate veterinary care and housing in accordance with federal regulations. The zoo owner was charged with 28 counts of animal cruelty, each carrying it's own $6,000 fine. In addition, a one year prison sentence was sought.

Months later the case was finally settled and resulted in a total of $3,500 in fines and 2 years of informal probation. A slap on the wrist for the suffering the animals at the zoo endured for nearly two decades.

Big Cat Rescue was contacted by the Mobile County Animal Shelter and asked to take in two bobcats and a serval. Shortly after BCR President Jamie Veronica,

Media Producer Afton Tasler, and Senior Keepers Lauren Grant and Alyssa Weber were on their way to transport these three wildcats to their new home.

Unfortunately prior to their arrival the serval had been smuggled off the property. It was believed the serval was with an acquaintance of the zoo owner across the state line and out of the jurisdiction of Mobile County authorities. It was heartbreaking to know that this serval would not be rescued.

The zoo grounds were in disrepair. Cages were rusted and falling apart, buildings with rotted wood were crumbling. Garbage and spoiled food was piled on the ground in several places. The scene was like one from a movie where the town is abandoned and nature is consuming the man-made structures.

Most of the cages were empty. Several animals had already been placed in sanctuaries across the country. The remaining animals included two bobcats, a few bears, an ostrich, a pig, and some free roaming fowl.

Lakota & Sioux' cage at the Mobile Zoo. Cramped and barren.

Rescuers Afton and Lauren demonstrate how small the cage is.

Page 4: BIG CAT TIMES - Big Cat Rescue Caring for Cats and Ending ... · the big cats. Tigers get much needed dental work thanks to extraordinary vet team. Read all about it on pages 28 and

Big Cat Rescuers got busy making modifications to the small barren pen that housed Lakota and Sioux, a male and female bobcat pair. The cage had several holes, gaps, and areas of deteriorating wire that had to be repaired before entering the enclosure. Making these repairs was crucial to prevent an escape. The cage also lacked a safety entrance, meaning the main door to enter the cage opened out into the free world. Because there was no way to lock Lakota and Sioux in a separate section a safety entrance was

constructed with caging supplies stocked on the BCR rescue trailer.

A safety entrance is a small caged entryway attached to the main door into the animal's cage. This allows rescuers to enter one door, shut themselves into the caged entryway, and then open the main door into where the animal is housed. A safety entrance is just one more preventative measure to ensure an animal does not get loose.

Once the safety entrance was

constructed Big Cat Rescuers loaded all of the crates and gear inside it and then entered Lakota and Sioux' cage. Having just invaded the only home they had known for years, Lakota and Sioux both began darting around the enclosure in opposite directions.

The ceiling of the enclosure was quite low making maneuvering with a net a bit tricky. Dried out animal bones littered the floor and several months worth of feces was piled along the perimeter of the cage. Dried dog food that was scattered all over the ground crunched beneath the boots of rescuers.

Lakota was captured first and relatively easily. He was netted and transferred to a crate filled with soft dry hay. He tucked himself deep into the hay and peered out as Sioux was pursued.

Sioux was a little more difficult to catch. She did not hesitate to leap over the heads of her rescuers from one side of her cage to the other. Thankfully after a missed attempt or two Sioux was also captured without incident.

Lakota and Sioux did not know it yet, but this would be their last day living

in filth wondering when their next meal would come.

Both bobcats were extremely emaciated. Lakota weighed 16 pounds and Sioux a mere 13 pounds (both nearly half their ideal weight).

Upon their arrival at Big Cat Rescue the bobcat pair were separated and put on quarantine. Lakota

tested positive for parasites and was subsequently treated. To prevent breeding and to avoid future health complications Lakota was neutered and Sioux was spayed.

Lakota was first to settle in and warm up to his new keepers. Sioux took a little bit longer. Both bobcats love enrichment, especially fresh catnip! We are so happy that Lakota and Sioux have been given this second chance all thanks to generous supporters like you.

FEDERAL BILL REINTRODUCED WITH NEW EASY WAYFOR YOU TO CALL CONGRESSCongress meets in two year sessions. To get a bill passed normally requires building momentum over multiple sessions. That is exactly what is happening with the Big Cat Public Safety Act!

Thousands of privately owned dangerous big cats live in inhumane conditions, pose a danger to the public, and cost millions of tax dollars to be wasted on regulation that does not, and cannot, work. In brief the bill would:

End owning big cats as pets

Prohibit the cub petting, swimming andphoto ops that are 90% of the problem

Limit exhibitors to those whodo not repeatedly violate the law

Basically the bill tightens up large loopholes in the Captive Wildlife Safety Act passed unanimously in 2003.

At the end of last session (December 31, 2016) 95 members of the House had cosponsored our bill, i.e. agreed to vote for it when it comes to the floor for a vote. That is over 20% of the House!

Any bill that does not pass in a given session must be reintroduced in the new session. After we made a few tweaks to the bill language to respond to feedback from some legislators Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA) joined our prior sponsor Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC) in reintroducing the Big Cat Public Safety Act on March 31, 2017. Rep. Denham is a member of the Natural Resources Committee, the committee our bill must pass through before it can go to a vote.

As for momentum, at this writing, just six weeks after the reintroduction, 52 members of the house, listed below in the order they announced their support, have already signed on as cosponsors!

YOU CAN HELP RIGHT NOWANY WHERE, ANY TIMECALLING CONGRESS MADE EASIER BY NEW SYSTEM A major factor in building support in Congress is having legislators hear from constituents so they know it matters to people in their district. Last session supporters like you made over 8000 phone calls to legislators asking them to cosponsor the bill.

The call is simple. When you call, an aide answers. Their job is to record how many people call in either for or against a given bill. You simply say

“Hello. My name is _______________ and my zip code is _________. Please ask your boss to cosponsor the Big Cat Public Safety Act (H.R. 1818). Thank you!” The aide says “I will let the Congressman know.”

That is all there is to it! Those few minutes of your time can end the misery of thousands of big cats. This Big Cat Times goes to 80,000 homes. If every person who receives it makes this quick simple call, the likelihood of the bill passing this session will skyrocket!

And now, with our new system, the call is easier than ever because you do not have to look up your legislator’s phone number. The system actually dials your legislator for you based on your address. Just follow these simple steps:

Step One: From your mobile phone text CATS to 52886. (Message and data rates may apply. Text Stop to cancel, Help for help.)

Step Two: Simply input the required address information so the system can identify your Representative and then click the brown “Call Me” button. You will receive a call on your mobile phone from a 202-phone number and hear a short-recorded message. You will then be automatically patched through to your U.S. Representative. What could be easier?

PLEASE BE THEIRVOICE AND CALL NOW!

WYETH GOES FREELate in the night on February 13th Big Cat Rescuers received a call from Pinellas County Sheriff's Deputy Wyeth Whitehurst. He had been called to a scene where a young adult bobcat had been hit by a car and he feared that she had suffered a broken leg.

Having visited Big Cat Rescue previously he knew right away that if anyone could help this injured bobcat we could. He loaded the

bobcat into his cruiser and drove it straight to the sanctuary.

Luckily the bobcat had not sustained any serious injuries. A few small wounds were cleaned and sutured closed. Big Cat Rescuers decided to name the 8 month old bobcat Wyeth after her rescuer.

It appeared as though Wyeth would make a full recovery. However, the next morning we were saddened to discover she could not use her right rear leg. The limb would drag lifeless behind her as she hobbled from one

end of her recovery cage to the other. There were two possible causes for this type of lameness; muscle or tendon damage, or, worse, a spinal or brain injury.

Thankfully a course of steroids improved mobility in her leg and she was completely back to normal within a few weeks.

Nearly seven weeks after her rescue Wyeth was released on several thousand acres of pristine habitat very near where she was originally found.

NOVA BOBCAT'S RELEASE DAYFAST APPROACHINGEarlier this year a seven week old bobcat kitten was orphaned following a severe thunder storm. She was rescued and transferred to an educational facility in Arcadia, FL that houses a small collection of farm animals and native wildlife.

The caregivers recognized her fierce disposition would make her a good candidate for release back into the wild. They went on the hunt for a rehab facility and contacted Big Cat Rescue. We were more than happy to take in the young kitten.

Nova is the first bobcat to be housed in our state of the art rehab facilities. Each of the four new enclosures encompasses 4,600 square feet of natural Florida habitat. These massive enclosures provide the perfect environment for orphaned or injured native bobcats to be rehabilitated for release.

Nova spent her first few weeks in quarantine in the West Boensch Cat Hospital while she was treated for hookworms and roundworms.

Once cleared of this parasite infestation she was relocated to an outdoor rehab enclosure. It is here that she has developed and honed her hunting skills. She has also learned how to camouflage herself in the thick vegetation throughout the enclosure.

Nova's big day is arriving quickly and we are confident that this feisty little

Nova has grown up so much and will be ready for release soon

Nova has been doing great in rehab and has maintained her natural fear of humans.

BIG CATS AID IN RESEARCH

In recent years Big Cat Rescue has assisted students and faculty at the Florida Southern College by providing them with fecal samples for various research studies. Over a period of 8 months in 2016 we provided samples from lions, tigers, leopards, cougars, servals and lynx. These samples were used in a study, conducted by two students researching gastrointestinal parasites and the effectiveness of preventative medication treatment plans.

Infectious agents are always present in the environment through hosts (like fleas, lizards and rodents), the water supply, and on some occasions they can be airborne.

Big Cat Rescue has an abundance of squirrels, frogs, lizards, birds and other small wildlife, which makes preventative treatment a necessity to keep the big cats healthy. Our cats are treated monthly with a topical flea prevention. In addition two dewormers are mixed with food and given orally; Ivermectin monthly and Panacur quarterly.

The aim of the study was to compare four facilities that house captive big cats and have varying treatment plans. The assumption was that lower parasite numbers would be found in a facility that uses a combination of treatments monthly, than at a facility that only uses one parasiticide semi-annually. This study was an extension of a previous fecal study carried out in 2014 by other students at the college. Results are currently pending. More recently we were contacted by a faculty member at the college who is investigating the responses of owl monkeys to chemical cues of predators. Owl monkeys are the only nocturnal monkey native to Panama and much of tropical South America.

The study will utilize fecal samples from several different species of predators including boa constrictors, great horned owls, and big cats (specifically cougars and jaguars).

We do not have jaguars here at Big Cat Rescue. However, our cougars were more than willing to donate to this research project. A special thanks to cougars Sassy, Aspen, Mac and Mickey!

HELP BIG CAT RESCUESAVE WILD TIGERS

Please join us in saving wild tigers (as well as leopards) from falling into and drowning in open wells throughout India!

Currently about 2,500 open farm wells exist throughout the country, many in the core zone of the Corbett Tiger Reserve. It costs approximately $100 to construct a fence around one well. WITH YOUR HELP, we hope to donate $10,000, which will fence in 100 wells to save wild tigers and leopards!

Big Cat Rescue has designed a custom line of International Tiger Day merchandise featuring our very own TJ tiger to raise these much needed funds. We will match up to $5,000 of the profit generated from merchandise sales as well as

donations made via Tigers911.com and donate it to the Corbett Foundation. This means your support will count as double!

The Corbett Foundation is a charitable, non-profit and non-governmental organization solely committed to the conservation of wildlife. They work towards a harmonious coexistence between human beings and wildlife across some of the most important wildlife habitats in India, namely Corbett Tiger Reserve, Kanha and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserves, Kaziranga Tiger

Reserve and around the Greater Rann of Kutch. Local Communities and wildlife share natural ecosystems and this often raises conflict, so the health and wellbeing of these communities are often directly linked to their willingness to participate in wildlife conservation efforts. The Corbett foundation has

implemented its programs in over 400 villages in the last decade. Learn more at corbettfoundation.org

The Corbett Foundation has initiated the project to install chain-link fencing around open farm wells to prevent accidental drownings of tigers, leopards and other wild animals who fall into these deep, unmarked wells.

Endangered wild tigers and leopards in India already face enormous challenges to their survival…let’s help them remove one obstacle that we can control by fencing these open farms wells!

cheetah research and conservation, covering an area of 16,000 square miles the Tsavo ecosystem in south eastern Kenya comprises the unfenced Tsavo West and Tsavo East National Parks and a diverse range of ethnic communities and tribes.

Increasing human populations and demand for land and settlement is causing ever-closer interaction between humans and wildlife within the ecosystem, leading to conflict and livestock depredation.

There are many misconceptions among local residents about the cheetah's behavior and ecology. Many people fear the cheetah, unaware of its non-aggressive nature. As a result, reports of unnecessary killings of this threatened cat continue to occur in the vicinity, even within the park’s boundaries by encroaching pastoralists. Local poaching in the study area for bush-meat includes cheetahs main prey species and has even caused cheetah deaths due to indiscriminate snaring.

The goal of the Tsavo Cheetah project is to protect and conserve the Tsavo ecosystem cheetah population by working with stakeholders and c o m m u n i t i e s in addition to g o v e r n m e n t a l

wire with a sliding noose, a snare, is camouflaged with vegetation and set up on animal trails. These trails are not often accessible to people, and sometimes the animals routes are artificially narrowed to ensure they are led straight into the snare. Snares are extremely inhumane killing devices. The noose slips across the animal's body part or neck and tightens, causing the animal to be trapped. An animal can be snared anywhere on its body, depending on the animal’s movement when it encounters the snare, and at any height. For many animals this means a long and painful death. On occasions jaw traps are also set.

Protected areas have a buffer zone around it intended to be an area defining the boundaries of human habitation. This area has frequent wild animal movement. Poachers lay wire snares along animal trails. It is a confirmed fact that Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka has lost 3 tigers, 2 leopards and 1 elephant to snares in the last 2 years.

This project aims to eradicate the menace of snares and traps from the forests with twin objectives of removing existing snares and dissuading further snaring through regular de-snaring walks and an active intelligence network to zero in on individual poachers. The team walks an 8 km route following animal trails scanning them for signs of snares. Snares & traps located are tagged with the geolocation before handing them over to the State

Forest Dept. Plotting the geolocation points on a map helps to identify snaring hotspots and appropriate follow up is then initiated.

Senior Keeper Devin Saari is wonderful to work with. He is always willing to stay late and pitch in on any project. Devin completes any task with a smile and a positive attitude. To show Devin our appreciation of his service a donation in the amount of $1,000 was made to the Tanzania

Lion Illumination Project.

Human-animal conflict is an ever growing problem especially in areas where the habitats of humans and animals overlap. With human populations increasing, there is more pressure on wildlife to survive due to habitat loss, and livestock bomas provide an easy meal for many predators. When predators kill the livestock, the locals retaliate by killing the predators. As a result in countries like Tanzania, Kenya and Nairobi, where human-animal conflict is prevalent, lion and leopard populations are dramatically declining. The Tanzania Lion Illumination Project is a small non-profit organization that works

in Tanzania installing “Lion Lights” on to livestock Bomas in areas where they are needed, to help rural communities protect their livestock and reduce retaliatory killings.

“Lion lights” are a simple and effective method that involve the installation of LED lights around the tops of livestock bomas. The flashing LED lights are solar powered and help to repel predators by disorientating them and causing them to flee. To date the Tanzania Lion Illumination Project has installed lights on more than 70 bomas. The result has been shown a dramatic decrease in both livestock loss and retaliatory predator killings. The Tanzania Lion Illumination Project not only funds the light systems but also trains local people and the native tribes in the installation and upkeep. By doing this they hope to be able to educate them and raise awareness about living in peace with the animals.

TIGER BRIDGE GETS A MAKEOVER

Two of our biggest tiger enclosures have access to a spring fed lake where they can swim or just lounge along the banks on a hot summer's day.

Spanning the lake is a bridge that overlooks these swimming areas. This bridge was constructed in the late 1990's and was in need of some repairs and widening.

Big Cat Rescuers spent two weeks completely rebuilding the the cat walk and the enclosure fences that would house tigers Seth and Andy. The fences were upgraded to stainless steel wire panels and the bridge was widened to allow for wheelchair access. In addition a stone paver pathway will be installed to connect the tour path to the bridge ramp.

The grand opening of the cat walk was on Memorial Day Weekend and we could not be more excited to share this unique observation area with our guests.

A roaring thank you to everyone who made this project a reality and devoted countless hours to ensure the tigers could have access to their lakes as quickly as possible.

EXTREME EXPLORE.ORG GROUPIESVISIT BIG CATS IN PERSON

Big Cat Rescue has 8 live streaming web cams on explore.org. More than 3.4 million people tune in each year to see what the cats are up to.

These high quality cams are installed in the enclosures of Nikita the lion and Seth and Andy the tigers as well as in Bobcat Rehab, our 2.5 acre Vacation Rotation, the Kitten Cabana (where our foster kittens from Humane Society of Tampa Bay spend their days), and the Windsong Memorial Hospital.

There are several extreme explore watchers that have been following Big Cat Rescue since the cameras went live in 2015. We were very excited to host a group of these wonderful ladies who flew in from all across the country and as far as Norway. The group spent a few days at the sanctuary enjoying every kind of tour we offer including the feeding tour, keeper tour, and night tour. They also got a sneak peek behind the scenes in our Windsong Memorial Hospital. It was really special for these extreme explore watchers to see the cats in person that they tune in to watch each day.

To add to the excitement this was the first time many of these women had met each other in person. Previously many had only spoken through the explore.org chat feed and other social media outlets.

Big Cat Rescue is so lucky to have fans like these who are a voice for the big cats all across the world!

GIVE DAY TAMPA BAYA HUGE SUCCESSFOR THE BIG CATS!Thank you to everyone who donated during Give Day Tampa Bay and made it a roaring success for the cats! Give Day Tampa Bay is an annual online giving event in our community that took place on May 2. Historically it has been one of the biggest fundraising days of the year for our sanctuary and this year was no exception.

We are thrilled to report that thanks to 667 of you who donated Big Cat Rescue raised the most donations ($127,601) of the 500 nonprofits that participated and had the second highest number of individual donors in the large nonprofit category. We more than doubled our goal to raise $61,000 and we also won $4,500 in prizes!

We will use your generous gifts this year for two very important purposes. The first is to purchase and renovate a building to be used as the recovery

area for injured rehab bobcats so they can quietly recuperate after surgery. It will have four rooms and can also serve as an overflow recovery area for our other cats. This building will be located near our new state-of- the-art bobcat rehab area and will cost approximately $31,000.

The second purpose will be to purchase new transport cages for our biggest cats. We desperately need new cages to bring rescued tigers, lions, leopards and cougars to our sanctuary. Our old ones can no longer be repaired after years of wear and tear. We will also use the new cages to transport the big cats within the sanctuary and to/from our Windsong Memorial hospital when they need medical attention. The cost to purchase four new transports is $30,000.

Thank you for supporting Big Cat Rescue so generously and for making Give Day Tampa Bay such a GRRREAT success for our cats!! And special thanks to the SHARE Foundation for the generous $39,000 in matching funds that allowed other donors to double the impact of their gifts!

YOUTH'S INSPIRING CAMPAIGN TO RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDSChildren supporting a cause they believe in is nothing less than inspiring. On March 5th, 9 year old Fernanda Gerzso visited Big Cat Rescue to donate $42 that she had raised thanks to her friends and neighbors. Fernanda didn't just ask for donations she designed a flyer and handed it out to everyone she knew.

Her flyer, titled "Stop Big Cat Abuse" exposed several issues that affect captive big cats including; over breeding, small caging, poor diets, harmful behaviors caused by stress and cub petting exploitation.

She collected donations in the amount of $1 and $5. Once she reached her goal she asked her parents to bring her to the sanctuary so she could donate the funds she had raised in person.

The old saying holds true..."from the mouths of babes".... children often remind us how we can make a difference by doing something simple yet meaningful. We don't have to fix the problem in one big gesture, but often by making several small ones.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men todo nothing." ---Edmund Burke

STUDENTS LEADPAW-SOME SCHOOLWIDE FUNDRAISING DRIVE

Middle school students Noela Schmaldienst and Leah Linkogle are two ambitious young ladies who had their sights set on helping big cats! For their school service learning project the girls set up a donation drive for BCR.

To get the word out about their project, they put posters up around the school and gave presentations to their fellow students. In between class sessions, they would engage their classmates at an informational table. In addition to pictures, brochures, and our Big Cat Times magazine, their table had 3 big jars on it, one jar for each grade. Students received a big cat sticker for each donation made. The grade that donated the most money got to pick which cat to sponsor – Sabre the black leopard! The rest of the money was donated to Big Cat Rescue’s general fund to help feed and care for all of our resident cats.

Noela took her enthusiasm one step further outside the classroom and raised additional money over a weekend by setting up a lemonade stand at her community yard sale. Altogether the girls raised nearly $200 and collected many in-kind donations.

BROTHER AND SISTER CELEBRATE HOOVERTHE TIGER AT THEIR JOINT BIRTHDAY PARTYBrother and sister CJ and Charlotte prove you are never too young to be cat-tastic Big Cat supporters! For their three-year-old daughter and one-year-old son’s birthday party, the Andrews family went with a circus theme and in lieu of gifts they asked their guests to donate to Big Cat Rescue. Hoover the tiger, who was rescued from a Peruvian circus and came to Big Cat Rescue in 2016, was the only one with his name on a gift. A donation box was wrapped to look like a large present and topped with Hoover’s photo. Over $600 was collected for the big cats!

Charlotte, who clowned around for her 3rd birthday, and CJ, the 1-year- old ringmaster, proved that the best kind of circus is one where humans are the main act! Thank you so much to the Andrews family for making Hoover and all the big cats part of your celebration!

BCT COVER CAT RESCUE STORY: MICKEY COUGAR

Mickey is a 14-year-old male cougar. He was rescued from a facility in Alabama called Animal House in 2014. The conditions at this facility were so poor that the owner's USDA license was revoked in 2006.

Sadly, once a facility like this loses their license the government does not step in to rescue the animals. They are, instead, left to languish until local law enforcement steps in (which is rare) or the owner agrees to surrender the animals to a rescue group.

The enclosures at Animal House were in disrepair and so overgrown with vegetation the animals within the habitats could not be seen. Mickey's cage was small with a concrete floor and two concrete dens. He had no soft ground to walk on and no toys to play with.

Some of the animals including Mickey suffered from severe medical conditions and were not receiving any sort of veterinary care.

Mickey could barely walk. Both of his knees were incredibly unstable and swayed far outward with each step. Shortly after his rescue Mickey was seen by a special orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hay. The exam findings

were grim. The ligaments in both knees were eroded away and the joint had been rubbing bone on bone for so long large deficits were bored away.

We considered euthanasia, however, Mickey's playful spirit motivated us to do anything in our power to restore his mobility.

Mickey had two knee surgeries to rebuild the joint and stabilize it with synthetic ligaments.

It was a long road to recovery, but eventually Mickey regained a significant amount of balance and could now walk around his entire enclosure without falling over. Mickey is a truly unique character

and we are so thankful that we are able to provide such life saving care to all of the cats that call Big Cat Rescue home.

Sad FarewellTaking care of 75 exotic cats is a roller coaster ride of emotions as we try to provide the best possible life for them and yet deal with the gut wrenching decisions of life and death. Of our 75 cats, 52 are over the age of 12, which is about as long as they live in zoos or in the wild. An amazing 40 are over the age of 15 (90+ in human years). Even more incredible, 25 are 20 years or older. It is with heavy hearts we must say good bye to these beautiful cats who have touched our hearts forever.

The felines memorialized on this page all succumbed to kidney disease. This is a common health issue among elderly cats and there is no cure for failing kidneys, only supportive care.

Angie’s owner brought her and two cougars to Big Cat Rescue in 1998. His county had changed their ordinances on keeping wildlife and asked if we would look after them while he moved and built new cages. He never came back. She lived at Big Cat Rescue for the next 19 years and was loved by all who knew her. At

22 years of age Angie surpassed the average life span of a wild bobcat by nearly double.

Josie's exact birth date is unknown, however, records can be traced back to 2000. Josie's story began at BEARCAT Hollow in Minnesota. She was housed with several other exotic animals at a facility that claimed to be a sanctuary. This "sanctuary" was actually a front for an illegal wildlife trafficking operation. An

undercover sting by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service resulted in the imprisonment of the owners who had caused the suffering of countless animals for more than a decade. Following this conviction the remaining animals were relocated to Spirit of the Hills Wildlife Sanctuary in South Dakota. The facility struggled and eventually lost their USDA license for not being able to

BIG CAT TIMES - SUMMER 2017 - VISIT OUR ONLINE GIFT SHOP AT BIGCATRESCUE.BIZ 25

properly care for the animals. Once again Josie was on the move. Understandably Josie was apprehensive when she first arrived. This did not last long. The volunteers, interns, and staff went out of their way to make Josie feel safe and comfortable. She became a favorite of so many Big Cat Rescuers.

Nirvana was left at a vet’s office for dead because she was so dehydrated. Ocelots were once in great demand as pets thanks to their striking coats and small size. However, as with most exotic cats, their unpredictable nature and propensity for spraying soon changes people’s minds. Many of these once beloved

pets end up abandoned or euthanized. Nirvana was a whole lot of quirk and spirit in a tiny little package. She loved enrichment, especially anything she could shred. She will most notably be remembered for her growly banter. No matter what her mood, happy, hungry, or tired, Nirvana would grumble. Nirvana definitely touched the hearts of many with her large soulful eyes. Her loss was difficult.

Sassy was born in 1994 here at the sanctuary. This was prior to a plethora of information now readily available on the Internet. At the time BCR founders had been misled into believing that all exotic cats should be bred in captivity to preserve the species. This was a complete falsehood that would later be dispelled. It is our position

that no animal should be bred for life in a cage. Many of the exploiters will claim that they are breeding their animals to save them from extinction. The only captive bred animals that would ever serve any sort of purpose in preserving the species would be those who are produced via official Species Survival Plans. Animals in these SSPs are pure bloods who can be traced back to wild lineage. Unfortunately animals produced in these programs will most likely never see the wild. The most common threat to all animals is habitat loss and conflict with human populations. Conservation of wild spaces and protection of the animals who reside there should be the main focus of any legitimate program dedicated to saving wild animals.

26 BIG CAT TIMES - SUMMER 2017 - BOOK TOURS OF BIG CAT RESCUE AT ZERVE.COM/BIGCATRESCUE

Fun Facts: The cougar (Puma concolor), also commonly known as the mountain lion, puma, panther, or catamount, is a large felid of the subfamily Felinae. The cougar is more closely related to smaller felines, including the domestic cat, than to any species of subfamily Pantherinae of which only the jaguar is native to the Americas.

Population: The Canadian population was roughly estimated at 3,500-5,000 and the western US population at 10,000 in the early 1990s. The population of Central and South America is likely much higher, although it is unclear how abundant pumas are in the dense rainforest of the Amazon basin. The Puma is also considered Near Threatened in Brazil, Peru, Argentina and Colombia, and Data Deficient (inadequately known) in Chile. The Florida Panther subpopulation, numbering 100-180, is isolated.

Size and Appearance: The cougar varies in length from 59 – 108 inches with a tail length of 21 – 36 inches, and height from 23 – 28 inches at the shoulder. Weight can vary greatly, between 75 and 250 pounds. They have a long body with a small head, short face, and a long neck and tail. Cougars are powerfully built, and the hind legs are larger than the front. The ears are small, short and rounded.

Habitat: This species is found in a broad range of habitats, in all forest types, as well as lowland and

montane desert. Several studies have shown that habitat with dense understory vegetation is preferred. However, cougars can live in very open habitats with only a minimum of vegetative cover. They co-occur with jaguars in much of their Latin American range, and may favor more open habitats than their larger competitor, although both can be found in dense forest. Distribution: Home range sizes of the cougar vary considerably across their geographic distribution, and the smallest ranges tend to occur in areas where prey densities are high and prey are not migratory.

Reproduction and Offspring: There is no fixed mating season, but in North America, the majority of births occur between late winter and early spring. Females tend to reproduce every other year, and give birth to litters of 1 – 6 (usually 2-3) kittens after a gestation of 90-96 days. Mothers give birth to their young in dens that are lined with moss or vegetation, usually in rock shelters, crevices, piles of rocks, thickets, caves, or some other protected place. Kittens

weigh approximately 7-16 ounces at birth, and have spotted coats until they are around 6 months old. They will continue to nurse for 3 or more months, but will begin to take meat at 6 weeks. The kittens will remain with their mothers until they are 1-2 years old. After separating, siblings will remain together for another 2-3 months.

Social System: Cougars are solitary cats and will avoid other individuals except during mating. They communicate by the use visual and olfactory signals, and the males regularly make scrapes in the soil or snow. Their vocalizations include growls, hisses, and bird-like whistles. During estrus females give off loud, hair-raising screams.

Hunting and Diet: Cougars are capable of taking large prey, but when available small to medium-sized prey are more important in their diet (especially in tropical portions of the range). In North America, deer make up 60-80% of the cougar's diet. In Florida, however, where deer numbers are low, they will take smaller prey including feral pigs, raccoons and armadillos.

Threats: Cougars are threatened by habitat loss and fragmentation, and poaching of their wild prey base. They are persecuted across their range by retaliatory hunting due to livestock depredation, and due to fear that they pose a threat to human life. Cougars are legally hunted in many western US states, although hunting was banned by popular referendum in California in 1990. Road kills are the principal cause of mortality in the endangered Florida Panther subpopulation.

Status: IUCN: Least Concern, CITES: Appendix II, USFWS: FL Panther is listed as Endangered

VET REPORTS:

TRIPLE ROOT CANALFOR PRIYA TIGRESS

Priya was rescued in November of last year. Immediately upon arrival she required emergency surgery to remove a twenty pound hydrometra in her uterus.

At the time of her initial exam it was discovered that Priya had a few bad teeth. Tigers have very big teeth and the roots go deep into the jaw

bone. A root canal is a less invasive procedure, however, it would require a specialist.

We are so grateful to Dr. Gingerich of Pet Dental Service for bringing his team to Big Cat Rescue.

Dr. Gingerich performed root canals on Priya's three bad teeth, one of which was her upper canine.

Thankfully all of Priya's dental work was completed in one sitting. Priya is probably pretty happy about that too.

SETH TIGER HAS MAJOR DENTAL SURGERY

On the same day as Priya's dental work Seth (who was rescued along with Priya) was sedated and examined.

Earlier this year Seth was brought to the Windsong Memorial Hospital for a full check up. He had a large swelling on his rear ankle and x-rays were in order to determine the cause.

Sadly it was determined that Seth had suffered a broken ankle long before arriving at Big Cat Rescue. The injury had not been treated leaving the joint only partially healed and riddled with arthritis.

Seth was started on a pain management program and has been doing very well ever since.

During Seth's initial exam Dr. Boorstein noted that he had several bad teeth that would require extraction and possibly root canals.

Dr. Gingerich removed 13 bad teeth! Most of the teeth were the small incisors that span the space between the upper and lower canines. Three bad molars were extracted.

Unfortunately for Seth he requires additional dental work and will be scheduled for a follow up procedure in the coming months.

NEUTER & EXTRACTIONS FOR ANDY TIGER

Andy did not have any immediate issues when he arrived with Priya and Seth so was only recently sedated for his first exam.

Andy got the works; he had a physical exam, blood and urine was collected and sent to the lab, he was neutered, two bad molars were removed, (every tiger that was in Andy's rescue group had dental disease), and full x-rays were taken.

The results of the x-rays were shocking. It turns out Andy has several pockets of air in and around his lungs called pulmonary bullae.

These air pockets can be congenital, traumatic or secondary to lung fluke infection or other bacterial or fungal infections (although based on the absence respiratory signs considered less likely).

This is not good news for Andy as the presence of multiple bullae throughout the lungs make him a poor candidate for surgery and may one day lead to spontaneous pneumothorax, in which case Andy's lungs could collapse.

For now our vet team will continue to monitor Andy. It is unknown how

long he has been affected with this condition.

ROUTINE GROOMING SAVES BOBCAT'S LIFE

Andi is a 20-year-old bobcat who was rescued along with two other bobcats from a zoo. The trio were quite shy and hated being on display. The zoo decided to find them a new home and re-purpose their exhibit.

Andi had developed a mat right in the middle of her back which she could not groom away. A mat is a clump of knotted fur. As the cats age they can develop arthritis in their

spines making it difficult to scratch or groom.

Andi was sedated for what we thought would be a quick and easy procedure. However, soon after beginning his examination Dr. Boorstein discovered an orange sized mass in her abdomen. X-rays confirmed there was something that did not belong. Andi would require surgery.

Dr. Boorstein opened her up and much to his relief found that the mass was completely contained in Andi's reproductive tract. What could have been a complicated and dangerous procedure turned out to be as simple as spaying her.

The mass was sent to the lab for analysis and the results indicated it was an ovarian cyst. Removal of the organ was curative and Andi is expected to make a full recovery.

After two weeks of healing at the West Boensch Cat Hospital Andi was returned to her enclosure which had been spruced up by volunteers and interns. She was very happy to be back home and we are elated that her life was saved due to a single mat.

ROARING THANKS TO OUR AUTOMATIC SUSTAINING DONORS!

Supporters who make their donations by monthly, quarterly or annual automatic donations from their bank account, credit card or PayPal become members of our Sustaining Donor Society. For donors, this method of contributing has two advantages. First, it saves the time it takes to write checks or go online repeatedly to donate. Second, it conveniently spreads the donations out across the year for those who choose the monthly option.

For the sanctuary, these donations are particularly helpful because it allows us to better plan our cash flow to care for the cats and process donations at the lowest cost. These automated donations can be changed or discontinued at any time.

Members of our Sustaining Donor Society receive special recognition on our website, in the Big Cat Times, and on a sign in our tour waiting area. You can set up an automated donation by emailing [email protected] or on our website click the Give Now button, and on the donation box select the frequency of the donation.

ON BEHALF OF THE CATS, THANK YOU!This list is maintained manually, so if you make regular automatic donations and are not listed, please accept our apologies and email [email protected] so we can correct the list.
