What was the Big Bang?
• The big bang is a theory of how our current universe came to be
• The big bang was NOT an explosion• It was an (and continues to be) an expansion of
the universe• This expansion was faster than the speed of light.
It occurred in 10 to the -32nd power seconds

The Beginning• After the initial expansion, the
universe was extremely hot. So hot normal atoms could not exist. Only protons, neutrons, electrons, and photons existed
• Electrons caused photons to scatter continuously.
• The photons would link to the electrons, causing the universe to glow.
• Scientists called this stage the “primordial” or “quark” soup

Cooling• After about 300,000 years
the universe finally cooled enough for atoms to form.
• This allowed the atoms hydrogen and helium to be created.
• Finally photons could move in straight lines
• This caused nearly uniform light to fill the universe.

Formation of Galaxies
• Some regions in the universe were so dense that they had enough gravity to overcome the expansion.
• These dense spots formed galaxies and galaxy clusters
• Distant galaxies are moving away from each other. But galaxies in local groups move toward each other.
