Recordinga big bond olbum in the

'90s

s kind of like showing up

or

a rap

concert

|ith

acousticmusicians

insteadof re cord DJ's.

Somehow,

get

the

eeling

that

people

are not making big band olbums. So, why should

I

put

one out?

Recause

t is the most

powerful

ond

profound

statement can make in

music.

t is the

most dircct

rcute to the heafis of my

fans.

The trilogy

of

"Paul

Gonzalves,"

"Lester (Young)"

qnd

"Ben

(lVebster)"

is dedicated to three

great

teno,

sa-rophonists whom I

revere

with the highest respect. These werc written

for

a

grant

that

prcsented

the music

qt

Northeastern

Univenit

in Boston. They were

augmented with twnty stings but somehou. he tapes of rhat

concert werestolen.

The solo of Paul

Gonzalves

was anscibed by Andrew While. After that I

orchestrated

he

amous

27

choruses by Paul at Newport

(Jaz

Festival) when

he

drcve

everyone

wild

and opened the door

for

extended

tenor

saxophone solos on

record. First I

listened to the Duke's arrangement of

"Diminuendo

And

Crescendo

ln BIue" behind the soloist, then I

prcceeded

to stay

out of

Duke's way

and

found

my own olchestration to

accompany Mr.

Gonzalves.

Not

an easy tqsk as Mr Ellington

was

ond b all encompassing.

Originally,

"Ben"

and

"Lester"

were

abo

augmented with

stilngs. Here,

we

used

"Ben"

qs

a

vehicle

or

solos

and

"Lester"

to

feqture

Sonelius Smith, Hugh Ragin and

yours

tmly.

I can't say enough

or

my twenty

years'associotion

fith

cohort conductor,

Butch

Moilis. His movement

always enhances the

band, bringing out the subtleties n m music

(which

I don't consider that subtle to begin

with). I

have thoroughly enjoyed working with him. I hope his effurts will be recognird in the

uture

of

large

ensemble ecordings, because

he contols

the

fine

line betwen

written

music and improvised music. It is amazing

to see

how he mixes

lhese

two apprcach$ into something that is not intended but

generates

o certain emotional

response

rom

a

listener

or a

ployer.

He

hits that mq* thrcugh osmosisor maybe o timely wove of t he baton.

These hings can not be seen on ,his audio leco.ding, howeven 6t watching the fqc6 frcm the bandstand

at Condon's Jqz Club the

week

before this recording was made told me everything I needed o know about

Rutch and the bond being on the right track. The

Special

or

his yria on

"Let

myself. Although

for

He

really rocked
