Tonight we’re happy to bring back Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. This is one group that continues the big band tradition but does it with a cool sound that pulls fans from all age groups-something few bands are able to do.

This evening’s sponsors are The Cassens Companies. The Cassens Companies have supported Arts & Issues for thirteen years and we certainly appreciate their continuing commitment. Thanks to our sponsors, along with the support of our many friends of Arts & Is-sues, this series continues to be a leader in the cultural life of our region.

Arts & Issues is administered by the College of Arts & Sciences, the largest academic unit at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. With 300 faculty members and 110 staff, we are especially proud of the educational ex-periences provided by our 19 departments. Here a student can pursue one of over 50 different degrees within the arts, humanities, social or natural sciences. A College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) education is a journey of intellectual transformation in which students explore diversity of ideas, experiences, and people. Our faculty and administrators have designed CAS to empower and nurture discovery. We teach students how to understand the world and apply that understanding to their lives. Our goal for CAS students is self-actualization. We help students in CAS, and across the University, to learn how to think and how to live.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy

In 1989, Scotty Morris, jaded by life as a young studio guitarist, decided to launch a three-piece jazz, blues and swing combo. The trio included drummer Kurt Sodergren and was named Big Bad Voodoo Daddy after a fateful meeting with blues guitar legend Albert Collins at one of his concerts. “He signed my poster: ‘To Scotty, the big bad voodoo daddy’,” Morris explains. “I thought it was the coolest name I ever heard on one of the coolest musical nights I ever had. So

when it came time to name this band, I didn’t really have a choice. I felt like it was handed down to me.”

In the years that followed, Morris and Sodergren formed the rest of the band which includes Dirk Shumaker on string bass, Andy Rowley on saxophone, Glen “The Kid” Marhevka on trumpet, Karl Hunter on saxo-phones and clarinet, and Joshua Levy on piano. The chemistry between the band, like the success that soon followed, was undeniable.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy kicked off the swing revival in the mid-1990s and gained mainstream popularity with their breakthrough performance in the movie Swingers. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has gone on to become one of the most popular touring bands on the road today. As a twist, the band now collaborates with symphonies in select cities. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy has eight albums to their credit and is currently featured in Dis-ney’s Meet the Robinsons and Ratatouille. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s most recent tracks appear on Forever Cool, an album released by Capitol Records this summer to honor Dean Martin. These tracks include origi-nal vocals by Martin.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy now carries on the tradition of the legendary big bands and orchestras by touring non-stop, performing over 100 concerts each year around the world. Like the Glen Miller Orchestra, Benny Goodman, and the Count Basie Big Band, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy sells out shows to audiences of all ages in cities as far flung as Honolulu, Ha-waii and St. Petersburg, Florida.
