Big American Fishes and Poor Indian people
My first few days of life at PSGIM has been a promising start for what seems to be
an enjoyable, studious and a scintillating 18 months of a complete B school
experience, from midnight strolls to Fests and Role plays to projects and what not.
But what made me to write for Atulya is not only my lifelong anger anddisappointment towards our bureaucrats and the government but also the
frustration and despair that I could do nothing towards it. Let this be a start of a
small contribution which I have promised myself to give to our country.
It has been nearly 3 decades since India became a
victim of one of the worst industrial disasters (I don’t use the word accident) of the
world. The sad part being that India is going allow the sinister act to repeat but with
a small difference, that it would be totally within the law and will cause only a few
more thousands of lives this time.
After an end of a generation of peoplewho died and succumbed to injuries due to the disaster and dawn of a new
generation of their siblings who are still affected by the aftermath, our government
has just promised that it will allocate funds to start rehabilitation and
decontamination of the place. It has to be noted here that no proper compensation
has reached the victims yet. When we compare this to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill,
where a few thousand American fishes and birds died, the United States cried for
justice and received it within days. The President of USA himself is now promoting
tourism there (which involved a bath in the decontaminated beach) claiming that it
is safe(thanks to the $ 20 billion by B.P). I am not sure, as Indians, how we should
take this, when our own Government thinks we are not worthy of Justice.
At this juncture, the Indian government has put forward the nuclear ‘non’ liability
bill (the bill makes more sense when said like this) for the second time. After much
commotion the maximum liability has been raised to 1500 crores(it is a whopping
$10.5 billion in USA, though we may think it’s a small amount considering the
spectrum scam trust me it’s a lot of money!).The beauty of the bill does not stop
here, it is the fact that we can’t even file a case against the American government
or the company which will supply us. Even the current law in our country is for
unlimited liability. This bill is making an exception. The liability bill is the first in the
series of steps that are going to be taken to protect the interests of the American
big fishes at the cost of our taxpayer’s money as our government is taking moreliability than the corporations.
I don’t want my first article to revel in the negative side of our government, but
seeing the issue as an optimist and in a brighter context, maybe I should take that
our government is trying to save money in buying airline tickets, booking hotel
suites for the successors of Mr. Anderson and bearing the judicial costs for a case
that is going to last for 26 years and in the end punishing a peon for the disaster.

The saved money can then be spent on tread mills and providing comfortable life
for pricks awaiting death sentence in jail for war against India. Let me too believe
what vimalan has said, quoting Chesterton let miracles happen in India. Jai Hind.
P.S Thank you saravanan, nirmal, vignesh, ifthikar(my inspiration) and my friends.
