BICOZAMYCIN: for travellers' diarrhoea 140 patients with acute diarrhoea received oral bicozamycin [CGP 3543/E; Ciba-Geigy] 500mg qid or placebo for 3 days. Bicozamycin reduced the duration of diarrhoea caused by Shigella spp. (37 vs 90 hours), toxigenic E. coli (31 vs 60 hours), and unknown pathogens (18 vs 41 hours). Cramps were relieved in all bicozamycin patients, and rash was the only side effect. Since bicozamycin is a poorly absorbable antibiotic, ' ... the clinical dictum that nonabsorbable antibiotics are ineffective against invasive enteropathogens .. .' needs to be re-evaluated.
