Food labelling
A new study has looked into the effectiveness of health ratings on food labels—and has
found that consumers consider the health star rating the easiest to understand. The study,
which looked at three types of commonly used front-of-pack labelling, found that consumers
were more likely to respond to the health star rating—and even pay more for foods with a
higher rating.
The ever popular breakfast staple, bacon, has just gotten a makeover after scientists have
managed to produce bacon that doesn’t include nitrates. Currently, the World Health
Organization warns bacon cured with nitrates is as dangerous as asbestos and smoking, so
this is definitely good news for bacon lovers.
After the previous uplifting article, it’s time to hit you with same bad news. Experts have
warned that we may run out of chocolate in the next thirty years due to the warming climate
making it harder to grow crops. According to the article, scientists are working on creating
genetically modified hybrids that could withstand hotter and dryer weather.
This article looks at why nutritional labelling for sodium needs improvement.
Food Safety
A South Australian bakery has been forced to stop selling its chicken sandwiches after health
authorities traced 35 recent cases of salmonella to the shop. Nine people suffered so
severely they were hospitalised, including two children.
Raw water—sounds like a joke right? Well it’s actually the latest, dangerous and expensive
trend to hit the US. Food safety expert, Bill Marler, is warning people against drinking the
unfiltered, untreated and un-sterilised spring water (which sells for $US60.99 for a 2.5 gallon
jug!) due to the numerous foodborne illness concerns.
