Food labelling

A new study has looked into the effectiveness of health ratings on food labels—and has

found that consumers consider the health star rating the easiest to understand.  The study,

which looked at three types of commonly used front-of-pack labelling, found that consumers

were more likely to respond to the health star rating—and even pay more for foods with a

higher rating.

The ever popular breakfast staple, bacon, has just gotten a makeover after scientists have

managed to produce bacon that doesn’t include nitrates. Currently, the World Health

Organization warns bacon cured with nitrates is as dangerous as asbestos and smoking, so

this is definitely good news for bacon lovers.

After the previous uplifting article, it’s time to hit you with same bad news. Experts have

warned that we may run out of chocolate in the next thirty years due to the warming climate

making it harder to grow crops. According to the article, scientists are working on creating

genetically modified hybrids that could withstand hotter and dryer weather.

This article looks at why nutritional labelling for sodium needs improvement.

Food Safety

A South Australian bakery has been forced to stop selling its chicken sandwiches after health

authorities traced 35 recent cases of salmonella to the shop. Nine people suffered so

severely they were hospitalised, including two children.

Raw water—sounds like a joke right? Well it’s actually the latest, dangerous and expensive

trend to hit the US. Food safety expert, Bill Marler, is warning people against drinking the

unfiltered, untreated and un-sterilised spring water (which sells for $US60.99 for a 2.5 gallon

jug!) due to the numerous foodborne illness concerns.

Although Christmas has passed, the food safety message is still clear: if in doubt, throw it

out. So next time you slip an extra shrimp on the barbie, it’s definitely best to eat it all and

leave no leftovers.

Summer is really starting to heat up, so here are so great tips on safe food handling during

the warmer months.

Diet and Nutrition

I’m sure we’ve all heard someone say they’re cutting out sugar for their New Year’s

resolution (you may have even said it yourself). This article sheds some light onto the reason

cutting out sugar is harder than you may think—by looking into the lack of added sugar

information on food labels

A recent report carried out by the Danish Cancer Society have found people are less likely to

order high calorie food if they can see the calorie content of each dish on the menu.

Keep ordering that chai latte because cinnamon might actually be good for you after recent

studies suggest cinnamon might be useful in lowering cholesterol levels, The Conversation

reports.

GM

Food manufacturers in South Australia are moving to label their products as genetically

modified-free in a bid to increase their value.

PFAS

Fish in the Daly River have tested positive for contamination by PFAS chemicals.

Hemp

This article looks at the potential health benefits of hemp as well as providing some answers

to those frequently asked questions surrounding hemp as food.

Quirky

MSG has hit the news, but not for the reasons you might think. According to this article, MSG

appeared twice in the list of Australia’s top “what is” Google searches of 2017 (1st and 7th).

Although trying new things is encouraged, here are some food trends you might actually

want to miss.

This article debunks some of those anti-hangover myths and remedies, so you might want to

think again next time you ‘sober up’ with black coffee.
