President’s Message—Judy McNamara
BICHON FRISE CLUB OF AMERICA
Happy New Year! I hope you have had wonderful holidays full of fun and family.
It is not too early to think about our Spring Specialty and also our 3 day Agility event.
It’s just peachy in Atlanta, so why not come and join in the fun! Specialty show days are May 4-5 2017.
Join us on Tuesday evening, May 2, for our annual meet and greet in the hospitality suite. On Wednesday morning, we will have our seminar presented by Dr. Carmen Battaglia, and in the af-ternoon our annual meeting to be followed in the evening by our raffle and awards banquet. We will start on Thursday with Obedience and Rally, proceed to 4-6 puppy, Sweepstakes and Bred by Exhibitor Special Attraction and Parade of Title holders and if that is not enough, the Judges Ed. Seminar will be after all events are over. On Friday, we begin with junior showman-ship followed by regular conformation classes. That is a full week of events!
If performance is your bag our BFCA Agility Trial is April 28, 29, 30 at the On the Run Canine Center in Ham Lake, MN. Shirley Hamilton and Rick Macias work very hard and have been very successful at making this an outstanding event for bichon agility fanciers. If you know of any bichons running agility, send their info to Shirley and she will send them information on our event.
The second round ballot for judges selection is enclosed as well as a report of the nominating committee.
Happy dog show trails to all. See you in Atlanta!
Judy McNamara

APRIL IS COMING
April is right around the corner and our BFCA 4th Annual All-Breed Agility Trial will again be held again this year at On The Run Canine Center in Ham Lake, Minnesota (suburb of Minneapolis) on April 28th, 29th, and 30th. Last year we were fortunate to share our fun event with many of you who were in town for our National Specialty Show. We want to thank all of you who came out to make it such a big success. As with any dog show or trial it takes a lot of effort on the part of its members to in-sure a well run and seamless event. Our Twin Cities and surrounding area BFCA members have generously given us their time and talents each year to make this happen, not only to meet the AKC minimum requirement of five members present at all times, but to put togeth-er all of the components needed. The one area that is critical is the remaining 30 to 35 vol-unteers we need each day to fill ring responsibilities (gate stewards, ring stewards, leash runners, scribes, assistant scribes, scribe sheet runners, timers, etc.) Our biggest motiva-tors for getting those volunteers are the excellent lunch we serve them and our volunteer worker raffle. We have the food covered but we are in need of raffle prizes. If you can do-nate to help us, please contact Shirley Hamilton at 715-259-7513, or at [email protected]. We thank you in advance; your generosity is truly appreciated. As always, we would love to have you join mknus for our annual trial. We welcome you with open arms to experience the wonder of agility, and see for yourself the bonding that goes on between dog and handler, as well as the culture of sportsmanship and support be-tween participants. If you would like to get a taste of what an agility trial is all about, tune in to the West-minster Master’s Agility Final, on Fox Sports (FS1) Sunday February 11, 2017, starting at 8:00 Eastern time.

Bulletin
The club is in need of someone to take over doing the bulletin. After 10 years, I have de-cided to give it up. I have templates that I can pass on to help you if you would like to have them. If you are interested in doing the bulletin for the club, you can email me at [email protected] or let Judy McNamara know. The Spring Bulletin will be my last to do so we would need someone to start with the Summer Issue.
Raffle/Auction
We are only 4 months away from Nationals so it’s time to start thinking of donations for the 2017 BFCA Silent Auction/Raffle. We are in need of items to make the silent auction and raffle a super success. Please look through your belongings to see what you would like to donate to make this year’s fundraising effort a huge success. New and gently used items are always welcome. Judy Beckham has generously offered to take charge of the raffle/auction this year. If you would be willing to help Judy with the raffle, please let her know. Her email address is [email protected].

Winter 2017 Rescue had another busy quarter. In November, we held our annual pampered chef fundrais-er which was very successful. We have this fundraiser every year. So, if you missed out there is always next year. This quarter started out quite slow for rescues, but really got busy in December. We got 10 dogs turned in during the last couple of weeks. It was difficult finding fosters during this busy time of the year, but we made it through. Another request was sent out via our news-letter and Facebook page for new fosters. Our biggest problem with fosters is with fosters who adopt and then no longer want to take another dog. It’s a difficult situation. We also had a donation drive in December and sold $400 of Emporium products. Submitted by: Gail Antetomaso, Co-Chair and Trustee Zandra Kern, Co-Chair and Trustee

Looking for a Breeder?
Naturally, when I have no puppies available, prospective buyers ask me to refer them to other
breeders; however, since I don’t feel comfortable telling them whether or not another breeder is
reputable, I have developed the following document.
Looking for a Bichon Frise Breeder? Start by finding breeders in good standing with the Bichon
Frise Club of America at http://bichon.org/breeders/. Next ask some important questions.
● What is your health test protocol? At a minimum both sire and dam should have been
tested for hip dysplasia at two years of age, and they should have been tested for patellar
luxation and eye disease within six to twelve months of the current breeding. More health
tests are desirable. Go to http://www.ofa.org/search.html?btnSearch=Advanced+Search to
find this information confirmed. After Part of Name , enter the kennel name or AKC name of
the dog to find out what tests have been performed on that dog. Click on Vertical Pedigree
at the top of the page to see how many generations have been tested (the more the better).
● Do your dogs have allergies? Allergies are a major health problem in Bichons, but
unfortunately you can’t go online to check this. Ask about dog food, because if it is
something unusual it may indicate that their dogs have food sensitivities. When you visit
the breeder’s kennel, observe the dogs for healthy coats with no signs of scratching.
● How do you socialize your puppies? Bichons can grow to be very fearful if they are not
regularly exposed to different types/ages of people, riding in the car, new places and
experiences, etc., when they are 5-16 weeks of age. All breeders will say that they socialize
their puppies. You must ask what they do to socialize them.
● May I come and meet the puppies and their mother? Before you buy, insist on visiting
the home where the pups are being raised. It is important to meet the dam, because her
temperament and looks will have a huge impact on the puppies. If the sire is on site check
him out also, but many breeders don’t keep boys because of the difficulty of having them
around intact girls. Never meet a breeder in a parking lot or other place to purchase a
puppy! This is a sign that the seller is trying to hide something from the buyer. Reputable
breeders want you to visit so they can see how you and your family relate to the puppies.
● At what age do you place your puppies? If puppies are sold too young they often have
lifelong socialization problems. They need to be with their littermates and dam for at least
8 weeks, and many breeders will not place puppies before 10-12 weeks. Breeders usually
hang on to their most promising pups for a while; so don’t reject an older puppy.
Reputable breeders will ask you questions also, because they want to make sure that their
puppies are going to the best possible homes. For information about questions to expect, please go
to http://bichon.org/before-you-buy-puppy/
Good luck! If there is anything I can do to help you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
I have had wonderful response to this, and hope other breeders will want to reach out to the
public in similar ways.
