A fter graduating from Rundle College and then taking biological studies and psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Azra I. Hussein never imagined she’d find her passion in business. And she certainly never imagined running a company that converted cooking oil into biofuel. But after graduating, Hussein returned to Calgary to run Organo Energy Inc. This year marks the company’s fifth anniversary, with Hussein at the helm since 2013. In that time it has evolved into the second-largest company of its kind. She has her sights set on becoming even bigger. “In the next five years, my goal is to become Western Canada’s largest commercial liquid-waste procurement and refining company that adapts to changes and stays at the forefront of sustainability as well as continuing to be the waste oil collection and recycling leader in economic, environmental and sustainable solutions,” Hussein says. Anyone who has met Hussein wouldn’t doubt her for a minute. She has been running the company since she was 21, is the sole owner, president and CEO, and has grown the business from one shipment of refined oil per month to one shipment per week. Organo Energy Inc. collects 3.25 million pounds of used cooking oil per year from around 1,500 local restaurants, returns it to the plant, allows it to settle, and then runs the oil through a filtration system to refine it. It can then be added to livestock feed or to diesel fuel. “It burns cleaner – it creates 75 per cent less emissions – so we’re helping to reduce pollution and greenhouse gases,” she says. “Not only are we taking that waste out of the drainage and waste-water system where it used to end up, but it’s also being recycled completely.” Azra I. Clients are happy to support Hussein’s green initiatives, and she further supports her clients by advertising their businesses to Organo’s more than 15,000 Twitter followers. Clients support her with more than just their used oil. Many clients are excited to participate in the company’s community initiatives, whether that’s helping with the Boys and Girls Club, the gala in support of Fort McMurray fire victims it co-organized and helped sponsor, or its own initiative called the Shining Youth Chefs program.

Each month, a chef from one of Organo’s partner restaurants volunteers to teach children and young women basic cooking skills at a local shelter or subsidized women’s housing complex. The chefs donate their time and expertise and Organo provides the ingredients needed to create the meal.

“This program is aimed at empowering our youth and developing a platform for them to discover and enhance their potential to positively impact our society,” she says.

And the company was built on having a positive impact on society. In a short period of time Azra I. Hussein has built a successful company that helps minimize greenhouse gas emissions while creating economic value. A cleaner sky’s the limit for Hussein and Organo Energy Inc. •
