Week 6

Introduction

1. Counseling assumes the need for change; on this there is general agreement, regardless of philosophical assumptions.

Introduction2. However, there is great diversity

around the issues of how to change, where to change, into what to change, why to change, and who is to change.

a. Problems (according to our culture): Syndroms, addictions, chemical imbalances, repressed memories

b. Solutions: Self sufficiency, actualization, empowerment, esteem, awareness, mastery, felt needs met.

3. Thankfully, God has clearly addressed these issues in His Word.

Five Phrases Summarize the Growth and Change Process

1. God wants YOU to be changing

A. Ephesians blessed richly in ChristB. Ephesians blessed with Paul and

Timothy as pastorsC. Yet, they were told to

be growing and changing, and you must, too!


Ephesians 4:1

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the

vocation wherewith ye are called,

Paul is calling them to change


Ephesians 4:13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of

the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature

of the fullness of Christ:

Keep changing until you are just like Jesus


Ephesians 4:15But speaking the truth in love, may grow

up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

Growing Up Involves Change!


Ephesians 4:17This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as

other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,

Instead of being like the gentiles, CHANGE!


Ephesians 4:22-24(22) That ye put off concerning the

former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; (23) And be renewed in the spirit of your

mind; (24) And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in

righteousness and true holiness.

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

F. Therefore, there is great hope for those who want to change!


1 Cor. 6:9-11 (9) Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived:

neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of

themselves with mankind, (10) Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor

extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. (11) And such were some of you:

2. God wants you to be changing to be more like His Son

A. Note carefully Ephesians 4:1, 15, 24, 32; 5:1


Ephesians 4:1

I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the

Not just any kind of change: Act like a Christian


Ephesians 4:15But speaking the truth in love, may grow

up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ

Grow Up and act like Christ!


Ephesians 4:24And that ye put on the new man, which

after God is created in righteousness and true holiness

Righteous, True, Holy: … CHRIST!


Ephesians 4:32And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's

sake hath forgiven you

Forgive just like God forgives


Ephesians 5:1

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

Change to be like a child of GodHow To Grow and Change



B. Consider also Romans 8:28,29;

Colossians 1:28


Romans 8:28,29(28) And we know that all things work

together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to

his purpose. (29) For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the

firstborn among many brethren.DO NOT quote 28 w/o 29!


Colossians 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom;

that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus

C. The model for life and ministry is the Lord Jesus Christ, not your favorite parent, preacher, missionary, counselor or school president.




D. The expectation is that you will be more and more like Christ in your thoughts, motives, and actions.



3. God wants you to be changing to be more like His Son by putting off the old self

A. Old self / old man = the habit of thinking and acting your corrupt nature adopted


Ephesians 4:22That ye put off concerning the former

conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts

B. Lay aside / put off = to strip off, as in the case of old, filthy clothes; it emphasizes personal responsibility for change.




C. Corrupt = spoiled; contaminated; rotten; perverted; evil




D. Lust = strong desires of any kind that motivate behavior




E. They are deceitful because they promise what they cannot deliver, for instance, peace and joy

4. God wants you to be changing to be more like His Son by putting off the old self and putting on the new self

A. New self / new man = the habits of thinking, motivations and behavior that emulate Christ


Ephesians 4:24And that ye put on the new man, which

after God is created in righteousness and true holiness

Change by putting off and putting on




B. Put on = as in the case of clean clothes; to adopt new ways of thinking and acting; it emphasizes personal responsibility for change.




C. Righteousness, holiness, and truth describe Jesus Christ and the scriptures.




D. The new self will be oriented toward pleasing God by obeying His Word.



5. God wants you to be changing to more like His Son by putting off the old self and putting on the new self as a result of a changed mind

A. “Mind” is synonymous with “heart”, “soul” or “spirit” in the New Testament and is to be viewed as the center of thought, understanding, belief, motives and actions.


Ephesians 4:23

And be renewed in the spirit of your mind

Change by putting off and putting on by renewing your mind



5. God wants you to be changing to more like His Son by putting off the old self and putting on the new self as a result of a change mind

B. This inner person is the real you that God sees and interacts with




C. Renewed = to be rejuvenated; made youthful; to be renovated




D. Spirit of the mind = that which gives the mind both its bent and its material of thought; it does not refer to some superficial change of opinion on points of doctrine or practice.




E. A habit allows us to do things automatically, unconsciously, skillfully and comfortably.




F. Renewed thinking will lead to putting off the old self (dehabituation) and putting on the new self (rehabituation).




G. One cannot simply break a habit; he must replace it.




H. Your goal is to have thinking patterns changed so drastically that the people you are trying to help automatically, unconsciously, skillfully and comfortably act like Jesus would act if He were in their shoes.

Conclusion

This life, therefore, Is not righteousness

But growth in righteousness,Not health, but healing,

We are not yet what we shall be, But we are growing

toward it.


Conclusion

The process is not yet finished, But it is going on. This is not the end, But it is the road. All does not yet gleam in glory,

But all is being purified.
