    Sycamore Tree

    "Jesus entered Jericho and

    was passing through it.

Now a man namedZacchaeus was there; he

was a chief tax collectorand was rich. He was

trying to get a look at

Jesus, but being a shortman he could not see over

the crowd. So he ran onahead and climbed up into

    a sycamore tree to see

him, because Jesus wasgoing to pass that way"

    (Luke 19:1-4, NET Bible).

    MOUNT GILBOA

Mount Gilboa is on thesoutheastern side of the

Jezreel Valley. King Saulfelt forced to commit

    suicide on these slopes

when facing certain defeatby the Philistines. In light

of Saul and Jonathan'sdeaths, David cursed the

mountain: "O mountainsof Gilboa, may you have

    neither dew nor rain, nor

fields that yield offerings"(2 Sam 1:21).

    Herod's Harbor

    This site was insignificant

    until Herod the Great

began to develop it into amagnificent harbor befitting

his kingdom. The harborwas built using materials

    that would allow the

    concrete to hardenunderwater. The forty-acre

harbor would accommodate300 ships, much larger

    than the modern harbor

    existing today.

    Aerial of Nebi Samwil

    Though its name identifies

it as the home of the

prophet Samuel and thetomb of Samuel is here

venerated by Muslims andJews, scholars are agreed

that Samuel's home andplace of burial are at

Ramah, about five milesaway. Excavations around

    the modern building which

    houses a mosque and a

synagogue have revealedsignificant remains fromthe Crusader period.

    Hezekiah's Tunnel

    The Tunnel

A 1750-foot (530m) tunnelcarved during the reign of

    Hezekiah to bring water

from one side of the city tothe other, Hezekiah's

Tunnel together with the6th c. tunnel of Euphalios

    in Greece are considered

the greatest works of waterengineering technology in

    the pre-Classical period.Had it followed a straight

    line, the length would have

    been 1070 ft (335m) or40% shorter.

    Olives Trees in Gethsemane

Adjacent to the Church of All Nations is anancient olive garden. Olive trees do nothave rings and so their age can not be

precisely determined, but scholarsestimate their age to anywhere between

one and two thousand years old. It is

unlikely that these trees were here in thetime of Christ because of the report that

the Romans cut down all the trees in thearea in their siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.

    Sorek Valley

Excavations of Beth Shemesh are visible in

the foreground and the Sorek Valley to thewest is behind. Samson traveled down

this valley numerous times including the

time when he killed the lion and laterwhen he tied the tails of 300 foxes

    together.

This was the vantage point of theIsraelites who watched the ark of the

covenant return to Beth Shemesh on acow-pulled cart from the land of the

    Philistines (1 Samuel 6).

    Dead Sea

Known in the Bible as the

"Salt Sea" or the "Sea ofthe Arabah," this inland

    body of water isappropriately named

    because its high mineral

content allows nothing tolive in its waters. Other

post-biblical names for theDead Sea include the "Sea

of Sodom," the "Sea ofLot," the "Sea of Asphalt"

    and the "Stinking Sea." In

the Crusader period, it wassometimes called the

"Devil's Sea." All of thesenames reflect something of

    the nature of this lake.

    View from Azekah

The best view of the valley

    is from the commanding

hilltop of Azekah. Thisstrategic city was wisely

fortified by Rehoboam, andit was one of the last cities

to fall to the Babylonians in

the invasion of Judah in586 B.C. The valley below

is the location of the battleof David and Goliath.

    Cave of Adullam

    1 Samuel 22 says that

David hid in the "cave of

Adullam." Today there aremany caves at the site and

it's not clear which one orones David used, as many

have been used andmodified in the years

since. While he was here,400 men who were in debt,

    distress or discontent,

    gathered around David.

    The Machpelah

    Genesis 23 records the

    purchase by Abraham of a

plot of ground in Hebronfor a burial cave for his

wife Sarah. In a deal thatforeshadows many such

    other Middle Eastern deals,

Abraham paid anoutrageous 400 shekels of

silver to Ephron theHittite. Later Abraham,

    Isaac, Rebekah, Jacob and

    Leah would be buried here.

    Cenotaph of Isaac

    Three major rooms make

up the Machpelah. In thecenter are Abraham and

Sarah. On the east sideare Isaac and Rebekah; the

    Jewish people are allowed

to visit here only ten daysa year. On the west side

are the cenotaphs of Jacoband Leah. Rachel was

    buried near Bethlehem.

    The pulpit (minbar) was

made in 1091 for a mosquein Ashkelon and donated by

    Saladin in 1191.

Sometime in the Hellenistic (or maybe

Persian) period, a group of Sidonianssettled at Maresha. This beautifully

    decorated tomb was used by

Apollophanes, the head of the Sidoniansettlement for 33 years. It was in use

from the 3rd to the 1st centuries B.C. Theend of the cave is shaped like a bed and

was the resting-place of the Sidonian

    Herod's Bathhouse

Herod had several private bathhousesbuilt at Masada. The caldarium depicted

here had a heavy floor suspended on 200

    pillars.

Outside the room a furnace would sent hot

air under the floor. When water was

placed on the floor, steam was created.Pipes were built into the walls to help to

    heat the room.

    Corinth Canal

    The isthmus connecting

the Peloponnese andmainland Greece is four

miles wide and as early as

the 6th century B.C., workwas begun to dig a canal

connecting the Corinthianand Saronic gulfs. This

project failed but a pavedroad (the diolkos) wasconstructed about 600

B.C. to allow light ships tobe hauled overland. The

    modern canal was

    completed in the late 19thcentury.

    Succoth from East

    The identification of Tell

Deir Alla is disputed byscholars, but most believe

    that it is biblical Succoth.

Jacob gave the name tothis place when he

stopped here and erectedbooths (succoth; Gen

    33). Later Gideon chased

the Midianites pastSuccoth but did not

receive help from the townelders (they later

    regretted their decision).

    Plains of Moab

    Just prior to entering the

Promised Land, the twelvetribes of Israel camped on

    the "Plains of Moab" on

the east side of the Jordan

River opposite Jericho. Here Moses delivered hislast messages (the Book

    of Deuteronomy). After

his death, the nationremained here for one

month to mourn hisdeath. This is also the

    area where Elijah was

taken to heaven in awhirlwind (2 Ki 2).

    Mount Nebo

    The Lord forbade Moses

from entering thePromised Land, but he

    granted him a spectacular

view of it before hisdeath. Climbing Mt. Nebo,

Moses was able to see thelength and breadth of the

    land of Canaan. When

Moses died, Scripturenotes that the Lord buried

him and no man knewwhere exactly he was laid

    (Deut 34).
