Page 4: BIBLE DIARIES & CLARETIAN DAILY...sadas and Simbang Gabi to help others to look for room in the inn. Can we ask our city of San Gabriel to do something for the homeless? If our faith

PRIMER DOMINGO DE ADVIENTO 3 This week begins the first week of our Advent Season, and as most of us, if not all of us know, Advent is that time we use to get our hearts and homes ready to wel-come the child Jesus anew.

What some of us may not know, or have forgotten is that Advent, like Lent, is a time of penance. It is a time to prepare ourselves for the new life Jesus brings, just like Lent does. Advent does not include official days of fast-ing or abstinence, but since it is a time of penance, it may. So what then does penance look like in Advent, is it suf-fering through the malls, office parties, and surprise fami-ly visits? Not exactly, though some family get togethers may feel like penance.

The penitential element of Advent is removing all the things that impede the Christ-child from entering us. It is looking at how we treat others and treat the poor, asking ourselves if we are making room for the poor and lowly Christ-child? Are we helping the poor to find shelter and food? Or do all our blessings turn into presents for our-selves or people who really don’t need them? Advent is a time we remember Jesus’ words, “Whatever you do for the least of these, you do for me.” Matthew 25:40

Advent is also journeying with Joseph and Mary in Po-sadas and Simbang Gabi to help others to look for room in the inn. Can we ask our city of San Gabriel to do something for the homeless? If our faith is to save us, it must be a living faith, that finds expression not only in our prayer but in the world, in a world where Jesus wants to be born anew this year.

Just as Jesus went to the least expected place to bring salvation, the small and subjugated country of Israel, so too today when He comes, He wants to go to that place in the world and in us, where we don’t expect Him. He will go to that place in our world and in us that is often over-looked, to that place where we have shut Him out before. Is there a place in us where we think we cannot change? Is there an addiction we think we cannot overcome? Is there a place of selfishness or self-doubt that never seems to go away? These are the places where Jesus wants the miracle of Christmas to happen.

But for this to happen, we must make the journey of Mary, we must give our “yes” to God. We must turn over our body to God to do what He wants with it. This jour-ney with Mary will take us away from our comfort zones; it will push us into the countryside to visit Elizabeth, to support others who are bringing forth new life, even though others thought them to be lifeless. This journey will ask us to trust a reluctant guide like Joseph who can’t even find us a place to rest after a long journey. Advent is not just pretty lights, it is a real sacrifice. Father Ray

Pastoral Reflec on

Padre Ray

Our middle school students took their learning outside when they took a field trip to the Sepulveda Basin. Students learned about inhabitants of the area including different organisms pulled from the water of the basin and had a chance to test the pH levels of the water. Climate change is about our responsibility as God’s children and people of faith to care for each other and future generations by caring for all of God’s wondrous creation. As the U.S. Council of Bishops states, “our call is to be stew-ards of the earth and as stewards we seek to explore the links between concern for the person and for the earth and for natural ecology and social ecology. The web of life is One.”
