So now we know.

For at least the next two years, but almost certainly longer, we will befacing the uncertainty of Brexit negotiations with the European Union. The logistical efforts to unravel over 40 years of treaties and laws willbe immense, and BIBA is actively involved in discussing those issueswe feel are the most urgent: Passporting, Equivalence and the

Regulatory regime with the relevant Government departments.

But, while the media is obsessed with the type of Brexit wemay be able to negotiate, we feel our annual conference isbest served by looking further forward to that time when,as a newly independent country, we will be reliant on ourexporters and world-class business skills to maximisethe opportunities ahead.

While the country still retains high-end manufacturingexpertise, it is more likely that it will be the financialservices sector, the digital economy and our creativeindustries that will be at the forefront of spearheadingnew markets.

We have built three sessions on Brexit and the‘Connected World’ into the programme. Firstly, onWednesday we’ll look specifically at what skills we will

need to ‘sell’ Britain to the rest of the world. John Longworth, the former Director General of the British Chambers of

Commerce, believes Britain will be well-placed to takeadvantage of global trading opportunities. Kevin Gaskell brings his

experiences of running two of the world’s leading car manufacturers,Porsche and BMW. And the panel will be completed by Nigel Farage, the politician most connected to the decision to leave the EU.

On Thursday morning we have a keynote session with three of theworld’s leading technology futurists: Jerome Pesenti is the Vice President of Watson Core Technology at IBM and a leading computerscientist; Anthony Townsend is an internationally renowned urbanplanner and an expert on smart cities and Aric Dromi, a digital philosopher who is the Chief Futurologist at Volvo Group.

We have also planned a seminar on the specific implications of Brexiton the insurance sector, with Huw Evans, Director General of the ABI,and Nicolas Aubert, Head of GB at Willis Towers Watson and Chair ofthe London Market Group, and Phil Bayles, UKGI Chief DistributionOfficer, Aviva.

We have two other fantastic keynotes to look forward to, Olympic legend Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill DBE will be with us on Wednesdayafternoon and we have a headline speaker to close the conference, whose name cannot be published until nearer to the event.

If ever there was a year to make sure you have both days clear in yourdiary, 2017 will be it!

Wednesday 09.45Planning for a post-Brexit futureA panel debate with:

It’s 2020. Article 50 was triggered in 2017 after severalcourt cases and despite opposition in the Commons andthe Lords. Negotiations were started but not completed bythe two years set out in the Treaty of Lisbon. Discussionscontinue with the European Commission and legislationto remove EU laws have begun but estimates suggest itwill be decades before this can be completed.

In the meantime the Secretary of State for InternationalTrade has announced limited new trade deals withAustralia, Canada and India. Discussions with the USare continuing...

Given this possible backdrop our panel will considerwhat skills and strengths the UK’s economy will requireto succeed in a post-Brexit world. Which sectors willneed to thrive to maintain growth and what supportshould the Government provide to offer these sectors?

John Longworth resigned as Director General of theBritish Chambers of Commerce to make the positivecase for leaving the EU. He has long believed that Britaincan take advantage of global opportunities. As the politiciancredited with forcing the Government to allow an EUReferendum, Nigel Farage has looked forward to thisoutcome for many years. With his background as a Citytrader, Nigel has maintained that the UK will thrivewithout the 'dead hand' of Brussels restricting ouropportunities. What more should Theresa May’sGovernment be doing to make sure the country is bestplaced to maximise its skills? How confident are they thatthe right steps are being taken by the right people?

Aside from politics, what management skills will Britainneed to invest in? Will tighter immigration controls meana shortage of crucial skilled labour? What can be doneto boost Britain’s home-grown workforce and provide forthe skills needed in the future? What lessons have welearned from the world’s most advanced manufacturers?Kevin Gaskell has many years experience running worldclass leading automotive brands, BMW and Porscheand outlines his beliefs in Britain’s managerial skills.

Wednesday 14.20An audience with…

Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill DBE

One of the stars of the London 2012 Olympics, DameJessica Ennis-Hill was not just the ‘poster girl’ for thegames, she also embodied the competitiveness, enthusiasm, determination and professionalismsynonymous with the Olympic movement.

Jess’s route to Olympic success was not easy. Sufferinga career-threatening injury at the 2008 Games, shefought her way back to win gold at the WorldChampionships the following year as well as at theEuropean Championships and was once again one ofthe favourites when the 2012 Games came along.

Entering the final day leading the field by 200 points, a topthree place in the 800m, the final event, would securegold. With millions watching expectantly at home and acapacity crowd in the stadium, Jess overcame thepressure with a masterclass performance finishing first, emphatically claiming a triumphant gold and providingone of the most memorable moments of a phenomenalOlympics.

Thursday 09.30A Connected World. What canwe expect?

Jerome PesentiVice President, Watson Core Technology,IBM

Anthony Townsend Urban Planner, Senior Research Scientistat New York University’s Rudin Center forTransportation Policy and Management

Aric DromiChief Futurologist at Volvo Group

The opportunities envisaged by the ‘Internet of Things’are immense. When machines can share dataindependently of the user’s input, cars will be able tobook their own services, navigate through busysuburban streets without the need of a driver and yourfridge will be able to order its own contents. ‘Smart’houses will link with ‘smart’ cities in ways unimaginedonly a few years ago.

The digital age is nearly upon us, but at what cost tosociety? If data can be shared independently, the samedata can be manipulated and the entire infrastructurecan be compromised by anyone looking to takeadvantage of a centralised network. The whole structureis only as strong as its weakest link – what if that weaklink was your connected doorbell or your toaster?

We have booked three of the world’s leading digitalthinkers to share their ambitions and their concernswith us. Today’s equivalent of yesteryear’s explorers;their visions have immense implications for ourchildren’s futures.

Needless to say, the chance to hear from three people atthe forefront of building the connected world rarely occurs. This is one session you really can’t afford to miss. Besure to set your alarm clock and get an early seat forwhat promises to be the most important session you willexperience in years.
