The Monaro is one of the most revered names in the Australian automotive industry and this iconic car has been turning heads in its numerous forms since its inception in 1968. While the original Monaros of the late 60’s and 70’s are unquestionably iconic and beautiful cars it was perhaps the development of the more contemporary third generation version in 2001 that further enhanced the legacy of this famous Holden beast. The third generation Monaro had a round-about way of making its appearance to the Australian Market. In 1998, Holden unveiled a Holden Commodore Coupe concept car at the Sydney Motor Show to much hype and acclaim, and it didn’t take long for the motoring media to describe it as the new Monaro. While it can be argued that it wasn’t the initial intention of Holden for this new concept to become an addition to an existing nameplate, public demand started growing and orders begun to flow in to the Holden HQ so the move was taken to re-design the concept for production. By 2001 the Monaro was launched at a reported cost of $60 million and 22 months of development. After Holden initially released the CV6 with a supercharged 3.8L V6 and a CV8 5.7L GenIII V8 with the choice of a 6 speed manual or 4 speed automatic gearbox, a Series 2 model was released in 2003 which featured some slight upgrades including a new dashboard from Holden’s VY range, a new wheel design and some changes in the available colour range. The Series 2 range formed the basis for a special edition CV8-R Monaro, being the Turbine Grey version you can see above. The CV8-R was released in 2003 and was made up of a run of only 350 units. The interior included a light shale leather interior, white dials on the instrument panel, leather wrapping including the steering wheel and handbrake while the exterior boasted impressive 18 inch, 5 spoke alloy wheels. The Turbine Grey CV8-R was produced in the prime of the Monaro production run with the Monaro program wrapping up in Australia 2 years later towards the end of 2005. The Turbine Grey CV8-R is one of those rare Monaros that collectors lust for and we’re pleased to present to you the opportunity to place your orders for your very own version in 1:18 Scale by Autoart. This is an exceptionally crafted model and replicates the 1:1 version beautifully. Well it’s getting close to that time of the year again, Bathurst is nearly upon us and we’re all getting pretty excited here at Biante. If you’re heading to the Mountain this year, keep an eye out for some of the Biante promotional girls who will be floating about. Get your picture taken with them and feel free to say g’day. If you were lucky enough to secure a ticket to our collectors night we are having, then congratulations we are looking forward to seeing you there. It sold out quite quickly due to capacity limitations at the venue so apologies if you missed out.

While we don’t have any new model announcements this month that have a direct link with Bathurst, we do have two fantastic touring car announcements and of course the impressive Holden Monaro CV8-R that you can see on the cover and on the left, all of which are in 1:18 Scale.

The 1:18 Scale CV8-R in Turbine Grey is a new addition to the range of previously released Monaros by Biante and it is quite a gem, you can read all about it on the cover and this particular model is one for any Holden or road car enthusiast as you can see in the various pictures.

Our second announcement for this issue is a pretty big one, the Holden LH Torana SLR/5000 1974 Australian Touring Car Championship Winner driven by Peter Brock. This is a true replication of the car that Peter Brock drove to claim the 1974 championship and it is sure to be a hit with collectors. This model forms part of the Biante Peter Brock Collection and you can find out more about this model on page 4.

Our third and final announcement is the Ford EB Falcon driven by Dick Johnson in the 1993 Australian Touring Car Championship in its iconic yellow and blue Shell livery. This is a model of a race car that in 1993 was well ahead of its time, both in its looks and its function and is a new addition to the Biante Dick Johnson Collection. You can find out more about this model on page 6. As always, to ensure you don’t miss out on any of these models, please place your orders.

In other news around Biante, you may have noticed that we have started to upload some product videos of models to the Biante YouTube Channel, read more about this in the section below and hopefully you like what you see.

Thats it for this issue, we hope to see you at Bathurst if you’re floating about and don’t forget to continue supporting your local Biante Dealer.

The 1:18 Scale Ford XA Falcon Blown Coupe in Candy Blue was announced some time ago by Biante and we are very pleased to announce that it is currently scheduled to be delivered to us in the coming month.

This model has been slightly delayed in its delivery due to factory issues in ensuring the vibrant Candy Blue paint job was correct. This led to a higher than usual spoil rate, but the advantage of this delay has been that we have been able to reassess our order quantity from the factory to ensure no-one misses out on this impressive model.

The model is simply amazing and follows a similar approach to our previously released blown XB Falcon in Candy Apple Red.

The modifications for this version are significant. Out is the regular stock Ford V8, replaced by a 351 Cleveland topped with a 6:71 supercharger and twin Dominator Carbs on the twin hump induction scoop lavished in chrome.

It rides on Drag ET radials on the back while the fronts are ET Front runners. Inside, the blue carpet highlights the white bucket seats with racing harnesses, and four point roll cage. Move to the boot, and again, the blue carpet brilliantly highlights the 5 litre fuel surge tank.

We will now be producing 1540 units of this item and we have a limited number still available for order, so please ensure you place your orders to avoid any dissapointment because once stores and collectors see this model in the flesh, they won’t be available for long.

After battling Ford with a six-cylinder Torana for the best part of four years, Holden decided it needed to return to a V8 power plant in 1974 in a bid to topple the mighty two-door Falcons. The result was the SL/R 5000 Torana, which was introduced halfway through that year’s Australian Touring Car Championship.

Allan Grice’s Sydney-based Craven Mild team were the first to race one of the new five-litre cars in the Australian Touring Car Championship at Oran Park, with Harry Firth’s Marlboro Holden Dealer Team not far behind. With his driver Peter Brock leading the title chase in the trusty XU-1, the HDT elected to hold off debuting their new car until the penultimate round of the ATCC at Surfers Paradise – and it was worth the wait.

Brock qualified the #6 SL/R 5000 on pole by seven-tenths of a second over Bob Morris’ XU-1 and ended up clearing away to lead every lap, setting the fastest lap and winning the 25-lapper by 23 seconds. The win also clinched Brock’s first ATCC crown and the first for the Holden Dealer Team.

The final round of the championship followed at Adelaide International Raceway and Brock and the HDT were the only squad to bring one of the new V8-powered Toranas. Re-numbered as #8, the new SL/R 5000 again proved to have been introduced at the right time and had the measure of the pace being achieved by the six-cylinder XU-1 runners. Again Brock put the new car on pole position, qualifying eight-tenths faster than the XU-1 of local driver John Lewis. The 1972 Bathurst winner was in a class of his own in the 35-lap ‘Datsun Trophy’ ATCC race, clearing away again to lead every lap against a relatively weak field – which was missing the likes of Allan Moffat and Allan Grice – to take the chequered flag by 43.3 seconds over second-placed Morris.

Brock ended up winning the ATCC crown by 34 points over Morris (80 to 46), but the SL/R 5000’s shelf life for the HDT would prove to be very short.

He and teammate Colin Bond used it in a handful of other events at the end of the ATCC, though it would be replaced for the start of the endurance championship – back at Adelaide International Raceway – on August 25.

The introduction of the L34 option package - with stronger engine components, roller rockers, bigger brakes, larger engine valves and bolt-on flared guards -turned the SL/R 5000 into a meaner machine. Brock’s run aboard it in the final rounds of the 1974 Australian Touring Car Championship may have been brief before it was up-specced, but the SL/R 5000 finished the job the XU-1 started and helped take Holden’s hero to his first of three ATCC crowns.

The introduction of five-litre regulations for the Shell Australian Touring Car Championship in 1993 saw the return of a V8-powered Falcon to the series for the first time since 1984. The man that won the ’84 crown – Dick Johnson – would be right at the forefront of the new category that would eventually morph into what is known today as V8 Supercars.

His Shell-sponsored team had already built a car in 1992 for the new regulations, though it never ended up racing. A second car was constructed and used later that season, becoming John Bowe’s car for the ’93 title chase. Team boss Johnson had a new car – EB3 – built for him for the new season and he made a successful debut aboard it in the opening round at Amaroo Park in Sydney. He claimed victory in the opening heat from the front row of the grid, which was held exclusively for the V8 cars (and the 2.5-litre BMW M3s that had been permitted to stay racing). But things went sour in the combined final when a tyre rubbing on bodywork eventually let go, pitching Johnson off the road on the run up Bitupave Hill while out in front.

Round two took the teams to Symmons Plains in Tasmania and Johnson took the #17 Falcon to third overall before claiming pole position at Phillip Island by virtue of winning the three-lap Dash for Cash. But the local Victorian-based Peter Jackson Falcons of Glenn Seton and Alan Jones would prove to be too strong on their home circuit and Johnson was left to settle for fourth overall for the weekend. Johnson’s local circuit at Lakeside in Queensland hosted round four and again the Ford icon was in good form. He won Race 1 and ended up finishing the round second behind Jones, though the form wouldn’t continue at Winton.

Another pole position in the Dash for Cash was the only real positive for the weekend with seventh and sixth in the two races enough for fifth overall.Round six at Eastern Creek started disastrously as Johnson hit a slow-moving Larry Perkins in practice, prompting the Shell team to give the #17 Falcon a major rebuild to get it ready to race. Johnson qualified ninth but luck wasn’t on his side as the car broke its diff on the warm-up lap and he didn’t even start. A rear of grid start in Race 2 saw Johnson charge from 33rd to 12th but no championship points for the weekend left him a ranked a distant 19th for the weekend. Things were again tough in round seven at

Mallala in South Australia. After finishing fourth in Race 1, a spin and pit stop to check on a suspected flat tyre in Race 2 dropped him to finish 14th in the race and 12th for the round.

Miserable wet weather greeted teams in the penultimate round at Barbagallo in Perth and it wasn’t just the weather that was miserable for Johnson – the result sheet was too. After qualifying on the front row of the grid via finishing second in the Dash for Cash, Johnson ended up 10th in Race 1 after a spin and eighth in Race 2 to be 10th for the round. A tough second half of the season came to an end in the championship finale at Oran Park and it was another tough one for Johnson. He qualified seventh but bogged down and stalled on the grid, eventually racing back through to 12th spot. The final race of the season saw Johnson come home 9th and 13th for the round, rounding out a sprint series that had started well but ended under difficult circumstances.

With Seton and Jones finishing 1-2 in the championship, Bowe was third clear of Jim Richards’ Winfield Holden. Richards’ strong late season form leap-frogged him past Johnson by six points to bump the Queenslander back to fifth. But while Johnson had a tough second half of the season, it was nothing compared to the fate that would befall his Falcon at Bathurst. A collision with privateer Bill O’Brien destroyed the EB Falcon in a heavy accident, leaving Johnson bruised and sore after smashing into the concrete wall at the top of the Mountain. A TAFE team repaired the remnants of the wreck some years later and Johnson’s 1993 ATCC car – EB3 - remains in the DJR museum on the Gold Coast built up as a replica of the 1994 Bathurst-winning car, which itself was destroyed in an accident at Phillip Island in 1996.
