Dear Foundation Family:

Creating Change

When you give to others, you are creating a positive change in their lives, the lives oftheir loved ones, and our entire community. As you will see in this issue, there aremany ways to create change, and I thank each of you for making this impact possible.

For an astonishing 34th year in a row, The Good Samaritans brought us together tomake a collective change for our patients and community through their annual Gala.As the photos inside show, fun was had by all! Throughout an evening of Illusions: Expect the Unexpected, our family dined, danced, and enjoyed a variety of entertainingactivities. What was no illusion, however, was the impact you made: transforming carefor patients with addictions through Good Samaritan Hospital’s Behavioral Health Services Drug and Alcohol Treatment Program, and providing annual support of GoodSamaritan Free Health Center and the Medical Education Research Fund.

You, our Foundation Family, also create change through your generous individual giftsthat support many areas throughout Good Samaritan Hospital, College of Nursing andHealth Science, and Free Health Center. Every gift makes a difference, and in this issuewe are honored to recognize those members of our Lifetime Giving Societies beginning on page 11.

I am so appreciative you trust Good Samaritan and partner with us to make thesechanges a reality for the people we serve every single day. It is a joy to share with youthe impact you make and the change you create for patients, families, physicians, caregivers, and our entire community.

With gratitude,

Mary L. RaffertyPresident and Chief Executive OfficerGood Samaritan Hospital Foundation

GratitudeLou and Joyce Christy believe in the power of home, family, and generosity. They were both born and raisedin Middletown, Ohio, and have lived in Middletown alltheir lives except for one ten year period. It is theirhometown roots and Lou’s health journey that broughtthe Christys to Dr. J. Michael Smith and Good SamaritanHospital.

Lou has a history of heart problems that began with a first heart attack at age 26 and at age 49, septuple bypass surgery. The Christys knew Dr. Smith during histeen years at Middletown High School and were excitedto reconnect when he was invited to speak at a Middle-town Heart Association meeting. At that presentationDr. Smith advised Lou of his ongoing heart problems:“Don’t ever let anyone tell you there’s nothing that can be done; we are developing new procedures all the time.”

Both Lou and Joyce kept this in mind, and they consulted Dr. Smith at a later date when Lou was experiencing severe chest pain. That resulted in Dr.Smith performing a laser heart procedure called TMRthat greatly improved Lou’s quality of life. Several yearslater Lou again returned to Good Samaritan for surgeryto have a gastrointestinal tumor removed and most recently had back surgery. Through each experience, the Christys were impressed by the treatment Lou received at Good Samaritan. “I felt the caring, without a doubt,” says Lou. Joyce adds, “We really feel the Christian influence when we’re there.”

Because of their gratitude for Good Samaritan, Lou andJoyce wanted to support Dr. Smith’s work in enhancing

cardiothoracic and robotic-assisted surgery that is gaining national recognition. “I think we’re all obligated to give something back, and it’swonderful to give something back to someone who has given so much toyou,” Lou remarks. “He is a very caring doctor and goes the extra mile. Andhe’s just as dedicated to his family, which shows a lot of character,” Joycenotes. That is why Lou and Joyce have made gifts to the Dr. J. Michael SmithProgram Advancement Fund through Charitable Gift Annuities, or CGAs.

“It is a great way to give back, and not many people know about it,” says Lou of CGAs. A CGA is a contract under which a charity, in return for a transfer of cash or marketable securities, agrees to pay a fixed sum ofmoney for a period measured by one or two lives. “It is mutually beneficialto the hospital and to us. We are able to help Dr. Smith and the hospitaldown the road, and it helps us now when we need it,” Lou explains. “Dr.Smith is giving the best to his profession, so we wanted to give back to him.We hope these gifts help others to survive cardiac problems and have a bet-ter quality of life.”

Lou and Joyce Christy’s commitment to home, family, and generosity will impact the lives of countless individuals and their loved ones for years to come.

After Jason Sedler was bornat Good Samaritan Hospital to parents Joe and Sue, his great-grandmother called him the family’s “angel without wings.”This name stayed with Jasonthroughout his life, and could notbe a more accurate representa-tion of his 36 years on this earth.

Jason was born with multiplehealth complications that kepthim in the NICU for three weeks.Testing culminated in a diagnosisof an abnormal Chromosome22. This meant Jason’s physical health problems would continue and be accompanied with mild developmental delays that would require 24 hour care. A nurse by occupation, the choice for Sue waseasy: she left her job to stay home and care for Jason. Originally, doctors gave him only one year to live. But Jason defied the odds, and throughout the years he touched more lives than Joe and Suecould have ever predicted.

“At the beginning, we didn’t know if Jason was going to live. Thenwhen we learned he would have lifelong challenges, we were so worried about him. We went through the ‘why did this happen to us’feelings,” says Sue. “But as time went on, we realized what a blessinghe was and how lucky we were to have him. He touched everybodyhe met in a positive way. He was so happy all the time.” Joe agrees:“He was so pure, innocent, and genuine. He always asked how otherswere doing, and seldom wanted anything for himself, except to spend time with you.”

When asked about favorite memories of Jason, Joe and Sue smile, laugh, and occasionally get misty-eyed. He loved Skyline Chili; hisservice dog, Maggie; going camping with his parents and three brothers; and going for a ride to get a milkshake with his dad. Most of all, Jason’s favorite thing to do was simply to spend time with those he loved.

Joe and Sue recount that even though much of Jason’s life was spent tending to his health, he was still incredibly positive.

Around 2010, Jason’s pediatric doctors told Joe and Sue that heneeded to transition to an adult careenvironment. This brought theSedlers back to Good SamaritanHospital, where Jason’s care origi-nally began. For the next five years,Jason was in and out of GoodSamaritan on a regular basis.

Throughout their time at Good Sam, the nursing teams became extremely important to Jason, Joe,and Sue. “The nurses at GoodSamaritan were very compassionate,

which made the experience easier,” says Joe. Sue underscores thispoint, saying, “Good Sam became our second home. All the nursesgot to know Jason and just loved him. He was like bright sunshine.”Eventually, it was determined that Jason’s kidneys would never workon their own again. Faced with the hardest decision of their lives, Joeand Sue made the loving choice to let him go. “We finally had to surrender to it,” remarks Joe. Jason passed away in August, 2015, at the age of 36.

In order to keep Jason’s sincerity, positivity, and bright light shining,Joe and Sue have created an endowed scholarship in Jason’s name atGood Samaritan College of Nursing and Health Science. “Because wehad such a blessing with Jason, we have been looking and looking forways to give back. Learning about the Foundation and the College ofNursing really hit home, because the nurses played such a big role inJason’s and our lives,” explains Sue. “The difference in having a compassionate nurse totally changes your whole experience, and we want to be part of making that happen for other people.”

Joe and Sue Sedler, as well as their three living sons, are proud thatJason’s example and legacy is living on through his scholarship thatwill foster understanding, acceptance, and compassionate care forothers. “He knew what was really important. Everybody was his friend, and he would find the good in everything,” note Joe and Sue. To all hemet, Jason Sedler was indeed an “angel without wings” here on earth. Now that Jason has his wings,he continues to bless the lives of othersthrough the impact of his legacy at Good Samaritan and beyond.

Thank youThank you, two words that have a big impact! The Spirit of Compassion Program gives patients and their loved ones the

opportunity to support Good Samaritan Hospital while saying, “thank you” to caregivers who made a difference during their stay. Your gratitude and generosity is felt by each Spirit of Compassion recipient and makes a difference to the patients we serve.

Please take the time to show your appreciation by making a gift in honor of a physician, nurse, or team member that has shown compassion and provided quality, competent care.

A sampling of these heartfelt messages is below.

Two Powerful Words

Shaina Eggers, RN James Maher, MD Prudence Tante Takougang, MD

We are forever thankful to Shaina, and toSue and to every single nurse who so beautifully and compassionately cared for him.

Dr. Maher is giving me the best care possible. I have full confidence in his treat-ment plan for me. Doctor Maher is caringand kind and I appreciate him so much.

Dr. Tante is the best Dr. ever! She is verycaring and compassionate. I so appreciatethe care she gives. I sure hope she isaround to take care of me as long as I live.
