cruise exploration of the exciting city of Budapest and the nearby Eger wine region.

When Food & Wine Trails’ President, Larry Martin, visited Budapest he was pleasantly surprised with the city itself and happy to discover the luxurious 5-Star Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge Hotel. This hotel has the best location and one of the city’s best wine-centric restaurants, Paris Budapest. It is also known to have the best views of the river, so we have secured Danube view rooms for all of Biale’s guests. Additionally, both Bob Biale and Larry Martin are friends with a Northern California winemaker who owns the sister winery of one of Hungary’s highest rated wineries. He has invited Food & Wine Trails and guests of Robert Biale Vineyards to an exclusive private tour and wine-paired lunch in Eger!

Budapest is architecturally stunning as it was the “tour de force” of the Hapsburgs, the Royal Empire that ruled most of the European continent from the 15th to 18th century. Now free of its Communist shackles, Budapest has turned into one of the most progressive and fun cities in Europe, with a vitality that at times seems to contrast with its staid, royal beauty.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Independent Arrival in Budapest [D]

Arrive in Budapest and transfer on your own to the centrally located Sofitel Budapest Chain Bridge Hotel. Check in to your room, guaranteed to have a view of the Danube River, and perhaps a view of the Chain Bridge and Buda Castle as well. Enjoy your afternoon resting, unpacking, or exploring before heading off to a welcome dinner with your fellow travelers.

The group will enjoy a three-course dinner in the hotel’s restaurant Paris Budapest. An intriguing fusion of both the French and Hungarian cuisines, the head chef works with local ingredients like Hungarian Steppe or Grey cattle and Mangalica pork. Dinner will include a broad sampling of wonderful Hungarian wines.

Day 2 – Medieval Eger and “Bull’s Blood” [B, L]

The next day you will travel about an hour and a half to the medieval town of Eger, described by wine authority André Dominé as “without doubt, one of the country’s most beautiful towns.” Eger is one of Hungary’s wine capitals and grows indigenous grapes like Kékfrankos and Lemberger, along with traditional European varietals. This is the home of the famed Egri Bikavér or “Bull’s Blood” red wine. According to legend, during the siege of Eger Castle in 1552 by Turkish troops, the local Hungarian soldiers drank red wine to give them strength to fight. The wine spilled on their clothing and beards, coloring them “blood” red. Rumors spread quickly that they were drinking the blood of bulls to make them strong and fierce, thus instilling fear in the superstitious Turks ending the siege.

Your first stop will be at Gróf Buttler Winery. Established in 1999, they recently added a second label called “GB” in order to modernize their brand. Their 2011 Gróf Buttler White was one of nine Hungarian wineries who won a gold medal this spring at the 2013 Annual Wine Challenge in Bordeaux, France, the world’s longest-running major international wine competition. After a tour and tasting you will depart for your second destination, Kovács Nimród Winery. This winery is also situated in the picturesque and historic town of Eger. You will be greeted by the gregarious owner (and Hungarian Knight), Nimród Kovács, for a private tasting and wine paired Hungarian lunch. Credited with assisting in the development of the Discovery Channel, E! Entertainment and QVC, Nimród has quite the storied background. He escaped his native Hungary at age 18 by swimming from current day Slovenia to Italy. A member of the management team of Sonoma County’s Starry Night Winery,

Kovács Nimród retired from the corporate world in 2009 to focus on his Hungarian winery. You will be able to see the influence of Northern California in the winery’s efforts.

After returning to the hotel, you will have the evening to explore Budapest if you desire and dine on your own.

Day 3 – Morning in Budapest [B, L]

On your last morning in Budapest, you will be on your own to linger over breakfast, do some last minute shopping or take advantage of the extra time and do some sightseeing in the

city. From the hotel you can walk over the famous Chain Bridge over to the Budapest Parliament building, go to the nearby city farmer’s market or just relax in your room and watch the Danube go by. You will have the opportunity to enjoy more of Budapest tomorrow the following day on one of the ship’s included walking tours. Around noon, the group will board a motorcoach for the short drive to the pier, where you will board the River Beatrice. Individual staterooms will not be ready until 3:00 PM, but the crew will store your luggage and you can enjoy some refreshments and a light lunch in the ship’s lounge.

As you cruise between the imperial city of Vienna and the imposing Monastery of Melk, you will have the opportunity to visit and taste one of the most beautiful wine regions of the world—the Wachau Valley. Here the Danube River winds through a stunning landscape that varies from hilltops crowned by forest marked by historic cloisters and majestic castles, to steep, terraced vineyards that produce some of the world’s greatest white wines.

Grüner Veltliner is the region’s best known grape. These white wines are crisp, delineated and mineral-driven. When young, they are the perfect complement to seafood or spiced dishes, and when aged they become more like a White Burgundy Montrachet. Here you will also encounter classy, muscular Riesling wines that exude fragrances of the famed apricots and peaches grown in the Wachau. There are also several juicy, must-try cool-climate reds, including Zweigelt and Blaufränkisch, which are produced in small quantities and are so popular with the locals that they’re hard to find outside of Austria. The region has improved so much in quality, that since the 2006 vintage, over 300 Wachau wines have been rate 90+ points by Wine Spectator.

Upon your arrival in Dürnstein, you will be met by your guide, a highly regarded wine writer, sommelier and Austria native. Elisabeth’s

impressive résumé includes multiple diplomas in wine education from both Austria and London, Austria’s 2012 Business Woman of the Year award, and even an internship at Alexander Valley’s Murphy Goode Estate Winery.

Your exploration of the Wachau begins with a drive to the hamlet of Langenlois for a private tour and tasting at Schloss Gobelsburg. One of the region’s best wineries, their wines regularly receive 90+ ratings from Wine Spectator and Parker. The winery is located in a 1,000 year old castle that was once a monastery and today is a regional landmark. Schloss Gobelsburg specializes in Grüner Veltliner and a few top rated red wines.

Next stop is Weingut Bründlmayer. At almost 200 acres it is the largest wine estate in Austria. Family owned and operated since 1980, winemaker Willi Brüdlmayer believes in ecological balance and only uses organic fertilizers in his vineyards. They also run their own cooperage, making barrels with Austrian Acacia wood. Along with producing the Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varietals, they are known for having the country’s best Sekt, Austria’s version of sparkling wine.

Weigut Josef Jamek’s winery restaurant is your destination for lunch. Built in 1912 as Hotel Wachau, Jamek's restaurant is the epitome of successful hospitality and owes its legendary reputation

to Edeltraud Jamek, the wife of the Wachau wine pioneer Josef Jamek. The "restaurant" as it was called, was known for its light, regional cuisine. This is true even today as Chef Herbert King is known for creating light foods prepared with local regional ingredients. You will enjoy a 3-course meal accompanied with a tasting of five of Weigut Josef Jamek wines. After lunch, it’s then a short drive to rejoin the boat in Melk, in time for Uniworld’s tour of the monastery or perhaps an afternoon nap.
