Nice picture of me…like the tongue pose? The name’s Louie. I have a story with a happy ending…a caring lady found me living outside her house. She took me in, had me neutered, and got shots to keep me healthy. At first I wasn’t so sure about that neutering stuff, but now that it is over, I feel soooo much better. But alas, my rescue lady could not keep me. She wanted what is best for me and took me to the Potsdam Animal Shelter where they found that I have Feline Leukemia. Drats! Now that really made placing me in a home much more difficult. I had to wait in the isolation wing because feline leuk is very

contagious to other cats…and I was in a building with a lot of cats! Everyone who met me said I am very “sweet”. I am not sure what that means, but I take it that helped save me. The staff at PHS put out a special adoption notice that I could go to a home with dogs, but no cats. Can you believe it? I found a home with Susan and two cuddly Beagles in Hermon! Life is good. Because they think creatively and really try to save animals, I am one of the 96% taken to the Potsdam Animal Shelter that is saved each year.

Louie: The Leuk Cat

Thanks to PHS for not giving up on me!

CONTRACTED TOWNS

PHS thanks these communities for choosing PHS for their animal care needs. We do our best to respond to every animal and individual that comes through our door seeking help. If your community is not listed, check to see that it is served by another shelter. Communities without a shelter provide fewer humane care services for residents and their

animals.

All animals adopted from PHS are spayed or

The 10,000 mark was reached in 2012.

I’m a Pit-Bull mix…you can’t miss it when you see me. Did you know people are

scared of Pits? Ridiculous! The Pit breed gets such a bad rap because of a few

despicable humans who make a few Pits into bad behaving dogs. I am not one of them, but since I “LOOK” like

one, I spent a lot of time at the Potsdam Animal Shelter trying to find a family to love.

Let me tell you most of my story. I have to admit I have pretty much blocked out my life before I came to the

shelter in May of 2011. I was a stray with big blotches of hair missing all over my body. Not a pretty sight then.

It really scared me to go there, and I must have looked timid and insecure and even scary to some people who

saw me in my first days.

People came to look for a dog to take home. That wasn’t going to be me…a Pit in the last kennel on the right

side. I sat and waited and waited and waited. Some people would say right out loud, “Oh, we don’t want that

one; he’s a Pit-bull.” Those words cut right through me. Humans expected me to exhibit mean and ugly

behavior…ready to eat small kids at a single gulp. Give me a break…I love people!

But I digress…months went by. My one year anniversary at the shelter went by…the days were long

sometimes. I got depressed from time to time, and I know the staff was wondering if they should keep me. They

gave me a lot of attention with wonderful walks and nice touches everyday. While shelter life is not as good as a

real home with my own people, I did get better. I am a survivor, and I stayed

longer and longer…17 months, no family came, 18… 19… 20 months… no

adoption in sight. Makes you want to put on a French Poodle costume and mask.

Finally, on what I thought would be just another day in my shelter kennel…

after 21 months... MY FAMILY CAME! A wonderful couple from Ogdensburg

smiled at me, hugged me, touched me with such love. OOOOH…I will never

forget that moment! Mike tells me I am the light of his life! Man, has he ever got that wrong….he is my sunshine

and moonbeams all rolled in to one! The shelter life was comfy and I am grateful for it. But there is nothing like

the life I have now.

Thanks for listening to my story. I have just one more thing to say, “Please consider adopting a Pit-bull. We

get a bad rap, but we are really great companions! Here are some of my buddies still waiting for YOU!”

HI-YAH…I’M COOL. FREDDIE’S THE NAME.

Iris Anable Challenges North Country To Support Animal Shelter

Iris Anable lives in a Mayfield Apartment in Potsdam. She is a feisty, caring, animal lover living on

a modest fixed income. Back in 2006, when the Potsdam Humane Society needed to build a new

shelter, Iris made an annual pledge of $10 each month.

At the end of the year, Iris came to shelter with her last check in hand, completing her $120 pledge.

She cheerfully announced the experience had not been in the least “painful “. And with that, she

pledged to continue to do the same in 2007. So it went… 2008--$10 a month, and the same in

2009…2010… 2011…2012!

Today, in 2013, those $10 monthly gifts are still helping the animals. At the start, Mrs. Anable never thought that she

would be donating over $800. Over time, the $10 a month gift really has become something much greater than it seemed.

“She is an inspiration,” says PHS Board member, Bonnie Boyd. “What our animals need is the help of a few hundred, or

even a thousand, ‘Iris Anables’. In 2009, the community responded to a challenge from Dr. Michael and Barbara Maresca. That

community leadership and support enabled us to replace our 30 year-old facility with a new, improved and larger animal

shelter. Increased capacity, though, means higher operating costs.”

“If I can do this, I know others can,” says Iris. “Caring for animals is a very important thing to do, and a simple gift of $10 or

more a month, can make a big difference. I challenge every animal lover to join me in making the commitment. You will feel so

good when you do!”
