DESCRIPTION OF UNIT:

Blood Irradiator 2000 unit is designed to house up to 30 TBq (810 Ci) Cobalt-60 source and the lead shielding provided is adequate enough to bring down the radiation leakage level on the exterior of the unit well below the accepted standards. It offers an irradiation volume of about 2000CC. The unit mainly consists of the following parts

a. Source and cylindrical source cageb. Lead flask as Biological shieldc. Central drawer with sample chamberd. Mechanical drive systeme. Electrical/Solid state control systemf. External cabinet

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PARTS

a) Source and cylindrical source cage:

The source cage holds the radiation source pencils vertically and symmetrically along its cylindrical periphery. The cage can hold a maximum of 24 pencils and is designed to provide better uniformity of dose rate in the sample chamber. Each pencil contains cobalt-60 source in the form of pellet of 1 mm (dia.) x l mm (h) or 6 mm (dia) x 25 mm (h) slug and is doubly encapsulated in stainless steel capsules (pencils). The sources are

5

Page 6: BI 2000 for Touch Screen Messung

further tested for any leak and made free from any radioactive contaminations.

b) Lead flask (biological shield):

This is a lead filled stainless steel container around the source and consists of two parts, (i) main outer body and (ii) inner removable shielding plug (lead plug). The radiation source is housed in the main outer body which is designed to reduce the radiation leakage level on the outer surface well bellow the permissible level for maximum source loading capacity of 30 TBq (810 Ci) of cobalt-60 source. A minimum of 251 mm lead as shielding encased in stainless steel shells has been provided in the lead flask.

Lead plug is a cylindrical plug constructed of lead encased in stainless steel shells, which forms an integral part of flask. This plug is provided to close the top cavity of the flask through which the source cage with source are inserted or withdrawn from the flask at the time of source loading or unloading. This operation is done inside a hot cell with remote handling equipment. The lead plug is firmly bolted down with the main body of the flask with 8 nos. of M-16 bolts, which will ensure that the lead plug remains firmly fixed to the flask during all conditions of transportation. At no time, lead plug should be attempted to be removed without the use of a hot cell under an expertise guidance to avoid any situation of radiation hazards.

c). Central drawer assembly:

The central drawer consists of three parts namely (I) Top drawer, (ii) sample chamber and (iii). Bottom drawer. These parts are aligned, assembled, and secured firmly with the Allen screws. The central Drawer runs vertically up and down through the cavity of flask unit with the help of a drive system to bring the sample chamber either in irradiation position or out-side the unit in sample loading position. The precise positioning of Drawer in irradiation position or sample loading position is done with the help of a control system.

The sample chamber is a hollow thin walled stainless steel cylinder in two halves, the removable half (door) is held in position by two arrestors. The internal size of sample chamber is about 13 cm (dia) x 21.7 cm (h) providing an irradiation volume of 3000CC approx. and that the rotating chamber is 11.2 cm (dia) x 17.9 cm (h) providing an irradiation volume of 2000 CC approx.

CAUTION

THE ASSEMBLY OF DRAWER AND THE INNER REMOVABLE SHIELDING PLUG OF FLASK MUST NEVER BE REMOVED EXCEPT BY REMOTE MEANS IN A SHIELDED ROOM (HOT CELL) UNDER EXPERTISE GUIDANCE.

6

Page 7: BI 2000 for Touch Screen Messung

d) Mechanical drive system:

The drawer is raised or lowered by a pair of stainless steel wire ropes, which run through a series of pulleys mounted on the bass frame of the unit. One end of each wire rope is anchored to the wire rope winding drum, while the other end is attached to a turnbuckle. An electric motor is coupled to a reduction gear through a V- belt drive and also an electro magnetic clutch, which rotates the rope drum at a fixed rpm. The precise locations of the sample chamber to "irradiation" or "sample loading" position are facilitated with the help of two limit switches mounted on the top of the flask and its associated control system. In case of power failure, Drawer with sample chamber can be raised or lowered mechanically with the use of a hand crank.

e) Electrical/Solid state control system:

The unit is designed to operate on a 220/230 V, 10A, and 50 Hz single phases, AC power supply.

The control system mainly consists of the following:1. Main Control panel assembly2. Contractor Panel3. Electrical motor4. Limit switches etc.

The movement of the drawer is controlled from the main control panel fixed on the front side of the unit. The features of the control system have been described in complete details with circuit diagram separately in this instruction manual for the operation of the unit, which should be strictly followed for the smooth and trouble free functioning of the unit.

f) External cabinet:

The cabinet is a housing for the flask assembly of the unit and it is made out of carbon steel sheets. The right and back side doors of the cabinet provide an access to the mechanical drive system as well as contactor box and other wirings. Removal of top panel gives an access to the limit switches and proximity switch. The control panel is mounted at the front face of the cabinet.

OPERATORS QUALIFICATIONS

The unit is simple to operate; no special training is required to operate it. However, for proper operation and preventive maintenance of the unit, it is desirable to have persons from mechanical and electrical engineering background with some knowledge of radiation protection as well Normally two persons of the users department are associated with the installation of the unit who would be trained by BRIT installation team regarding the operation and maintenance aspects of the unit.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR OPERATION:

7

Page 8: BI 2000 for Touch Screen Messung

The Gamma chamber is simple to operate. The following sequence of operation is recommended:

1. Connect the two three pin plugs of the main power supply and control panel of the unit to 230V, 50Hz single phase AC Supply with proper grounding connection and switch on them. A study power supply of about 220 Volt must be made available for the proper functioning of the unit

2. When the sample chamber is up, remove the sample chamber removable half (door) by turning the top and the bottom arrestors.

3. Place the product to be irradiated in the sample chamber. Any flexible tubing or electrical leads if required could be introduced through the top access tube into the sample chamber. Replace the removable half (door) of sample chamber to its position, and lock it by turning both the arrestors before power is switched on. Ensure that the hand crank has been detached from the unit

4. Switch on the power by actuating Mains key and computer key on the control panel, this will initialize the unit in ''MANUAL MODE".

5. MANUAL MODE: Press ‘LOWER’ switch. The Drawer will start moving downwards and will stop in irradiation zone. At the end of the desired time, the 'RAISE' switch should be pressed to bring the sample chamber to unloading position. The product now can be removed from the sample chamber by opening the door.

6. SOLID STATE TIMER IN MANUAL MODE: In the manual mode, there is an option to use a Solid State Timer for Irradiation ranging from 6 seconds to 99hrs. This timer is located in the control cabinet rack, adjacent to contactor panel. This timer operation is available only in the manual mode. If the switch (located adjacent to the timer in the control cabinet rack) in the “OFF” position, then the sample chamber can be raised and lowered only manually as indicated above in b & c. If the timer switch is in “ON” position then the sample chamber has to be lowered manually and the timer will start functioning as soon as the sample chamber reaches the Irradiation zone. At the end of the set time, the sample chamber will come up automatically.

7. AUTO MODE: Switch 'ON' the mains key as above and wait for few seconds till it displays the MENU Screen. Then press the operation mode on the touch screen display. This will set the unit in the auto mode. For the details of operation refer the instructions given on control system of BI 2000

CAUTION

8

Page 9: BI 2000 for Touch Screen Messung

ALWAYS ENSURE THAT THE HAND CRANK IS DETACHED FROM THE UNIT BEFORE SWITCHING THE POWER ON.

EVERYDAY INSPECTION OF THE UNIT BY THE OPERATOR

a) Voltage : It should be around 220/230 ±10v if the voltage is less than 210 it may not operate in that case. Use hand crank only for drawer movement after disconnecting the unit electrically.

b) Wire Rope Winding: Before every operation for taking "UP" see the wire rope winding on the drum. If it is O.K. then only operates otherwise first set it O.K.

c) Arrestor Screws Of Sample Chamber: 2 numbers of arrestor screws are keeping the arrestor pieces (locking pieces) of sample chamber in their position and also allow them to rotate to facilitate removing the removable half of the sample chamber it should be seen that the screws head do not come out or project out of the drawer surface. In case it is projecting out, arrestor screws should be screwed in by a screwdriver ensuring that locking pieces still rotates smoothly.

d) For Other Major/Unseen Problems: Contact Electrical / Electronics / Mechanical persons.

ROUTINE MAINTENANCE

a. MOTOR: Grease the motor bearings once in six months.

b. REDUCTION GEAR: Check the level of oil in the gearbox every six months by opening the oil level plug. If there is any reduction in oil level, make it up with SAE 90 or any other equivalent good quality gear oil.

c. V-BELT DRIVES: Check the V-belt drive periodically. The belt may get slackened due to wear. If tightening of the belt is required loosen the four corresponding mounting bolts and move to suit the tension.

d. LIMIT SWITCHES: There are two limit switches. These are of roller head actuator type, If any of these become defective replace by a similar one taking care to connect as per circuit diagram as well as to provide a normal gap (approx 1 mm) between the limit switch roller (press condition) and Drawer.

e. WIRE ROPES: Grease the wire ropes once in six months. Replace with the correct size and type when necessary taking care of the direction of rope wining on the drum. The tension of the both the wire ropes should be always same and to be checked periodically every three months. Adjustment of tension can be done through the turnbuckles attached to the wire rope system.

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS:

1. Whenever the unit is not in use, allow the drawer Sample-loading position.

2. For very long manual exposure, power should be switched off after taking the drawer to irradiation position. This will eliminate the possibility of someone disturbing the sample chamber during irradiation.

3. The various switch keys and the band crank should be kept under the safe custody of the operator to avoid unauthorized operation of the Unit.

4. Prior to operating the unit the supply voltage should be checked, it should be around 220V. In the event of voltage, dropping to less than 210V the unit may not function properly. Where power fluctuations are generally occurring a suitable power stabilizer (3 KVA, 1 Phase, 230Volts) to be used.

PROCEDURE FOR LIMIT SWITCH ADJUSTMENT AND REPLACEMENT

Top and bottom limit switches are mounted on the top of lead Flask on the backside. These two limit switches are sensing the extreme top or bottom position of the drawer. For the proper functioning of the limit switches, it should be firmly fixed to its bracket as well as it should have a clearance of about 1-2 mm. between its roller and the drawer Surface. Therefore its resetting is required if the clearance has Changed over a period of time (say 6 months or so). The following steps are needed to adjust it or replace it.

STEPS1. First mark the present location of the bottom plate of the bracket by a pen /

marker.

10

Page 11: BI 2000 for Touch Screen Messung

2. Remove the bolts of the bottom bracket and take out the limit switch bracket.

3. Now move the bottom bracket of the limit switch a little backward or forward so that clearance of 1-2 mm. is obtained and then fixed the bolts as before.

4. For changing a new limit switch, remove the old one after Noting down its wiring connection.

5. Then fix the new one and reconnect the electrical wiring, as before help of the circuit diagram should also be taken while Disconnecting and reconnecting the wiring.
