Overview In the mountain kingdom of Bhutan, progress is measured in Gross National Happiness, not wealth, and mass tourism is not welcome. This philosophy, together with ancient traditions and a pristine environment in the foothills of the Himalayas, create a unique travel destination which appeals equally to the mind, the eye and the spirit. For centuries Bhutan existed in self-imposed isolation and has only recently opened to visitors. Our 14-day ADFAS tour takes you across the country at a gentle pace, visiting remote mountain monasteries, examining local arts and crafts and marvelling at the scenery. UK-based tour leader Zara Fleming is a highly experienced tour leader to this destination, and her expertise is known to Australian ADFAS members from her popular lecture tours here. Zara will unlock Bhutan’s secrets, increasing your enjoyment and understanding. Her local contacts will ensure experiences that are beyond the reach of most travellers. The itinerary has been carefully crafted to meet the needs of Australian travellers wanting to get more than just a whistle-stop tour of the country’s highlights. Unlike most tours to Bhutan, which offer modest three-star accommodation, we have selected hotels in the four- and five-star category.

Your tour leader Zara Fleming is an art historian, exhibition curator and lecturer specialising in the art and culture of Tibet, Bhutan, the Himalayas and Mongolia. Initially based at the Victoria & Albert Museum, where she had overall responsibility for the Tibetan and Nepalese collections, she has also worked with the Central Asian Department of Bonn University. Zara first visited Nepal in 1973 and Bhutan in 1976 and has been returning to these areas on a regular basis ever since. She has led tours for over 30 years.

Tour leader Zara Fleming explains that on her first visit to Bhutan in 1976, she found…

“An exceptionally beautiful place, caught in a medieval time warp which at that time had only one road running half way across the country, no airport and no towns of any real size. The people wore national dress and Buddhism permeated every aspect of their lives. I have returned to the country many times since and despite a more fully developed infrastructure (in the form of roads, towns and three airports), it has not lost its magic or its very unique cultural identity. Apart from the pristine beauty of its mountainous landscape, lush forests and secluded valleys, Bhutan is also a cultural paradise. Buddhism came into the country in the 7th century and has inspired some of the most outstanding architecture in the form of its dzongs. These are magnificent buildings, always strategically located, which combine the functions of a monastery, a fortress and a seat of local government.”

Tour Highlights

TIGER’S NEST The remarkable architecture of Tiger’s Nest Monastery, Bhutan’s most famous and photogenic site, perched on the side of what appears to be a sheer vertical cliff, 3000 ft above the Paro Valley. Explore the four main temples that form part of the thirteen tigers’ lair caves founded by Guru Rinpoche after flying from Tibet on the back of a soaring tigress.

MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS Admire glorious mountain scenery and the towering snow-capped peaks of the eastern Himalaya rising over 7000 metres. Traverse the spectacular zigzag roadway over the dramatic 3000-metre-high Dochu-La Pass between Thimphu and Punakha, passing the 108 memorial stupas built under the patronage of the Queen Mother. Descend into the remote and splendid valleys of central Bhutan.

PUNAKHA DZONG The vast and magnificent Punakha Dzong or ‘Palace of great bliss’, one of the most spectacular buildings in Asia. Arguably, the most beautiful dzong in the country, especially in spring when the lilac-coloured Jacaranda trees contrast with the imposing whitewashed walls. The dzong served as the capital and seat of government until the 1950’s and has seen the coronation of all Bhutan’s kings.

THE HAPPIEST NATION ON EARTH Enjoy meeting the warm-hearted people of Bhutan: archers, farmers and artists going about their daily lives while preserving the ancient culture and traditions that are unique to the Bhutanese Kingdom. Revel in the unique legacy of a national government that measures its people’s collective happiness by emphasizing harmony with nature and traditional values expressed by the four pillars of Gross National Happiness.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF BHUTAN Interpret the history and culture of Bhutan through the exhibits of bronze sculpture, precious painting, weaponry and historic textiles housed at the National Museum in Paro. Explore a rich variety of artefacts from all over the country and dating from as early as 4000 BC showing Bhutan’s transition from the Stone Age to a modern Mahayanist Buddhist and multicultural.

Detailed itinerary Included meals are shown with the symbols B, L and D.

Friday April 24 Arrive Thimphu

Flights from Bangkok arrive in Bhutan in the morning. Meet Zara Fleming and your local guide on arrival. We then head east towards Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan since 1961 and hub of government, religion and commerce. After arriving at our hotel, we have lunch and check in before meandering through the town, gaining an introduction to the history, culture and art of Bhutan. Later in the afternoon, we visit the Memorial Chorten built in 1974 in honour of the 3rd king, Jigme Dorje Wangchuck (1928-72), which contains some very fine quality Buddhist murals. At this time of day, one usually sees an endless stream of Bhutanese people circumambulating and paying homage to this sacred place. Overnight Thimphu (L, D)

Saturday April 25 Explore Thimphu

In the morning we visit one of the oldest temples in the Thimphu valley, the Changangka Lhakhang built in the 15th century, perched on a hilltop overlooking the town. We then continue to the Zorig Chusom (School of Thirteen Arts and Crafts) where boys and girls are trained in the traditional artistic tradition of Bhutan, the Institute of Traditional Medicine and the Textile Museum, all in close proximity. The latter houses an outstanding display of Bhutanese textiles and costumes which reflect the diversity of the weaving and embroidery traditions found in Bhutan. In the afternoon, there is an opportunity to see the new statue of Buddha Sakyamuni, which sits on a hill overlooking the Thimphu Valley. It is 61 metres high and is intended to spread blessings, peace and happiness throughout the world. In the late afternoon we visit the Tashichoe Dzong, its superb architecture delighting the eye with its balanced proportions and air of majesty. The dzong houses the Royal Chamber, the ministries of government and a school for young monks. It is also the summer headquarters of the Je Khempo, Bhutan’s Head Abbot and head of the religious Drukpa Kagyupa school. The original dzong was destroyed by fire in 1772. When the third King of Bhutan, Jigme Dorje Wangchuk made Thimphu his capital, he rebuilt the dzong using traditional methods. This became the seat of government and was completed in 1969. sunday April 26 Kabesa and Begana Valleys

A day of exploration just outside Thimphu, beginning at the Choki Traditional Art School in the Kabesa Valley. This privately run school is an outstanding example of how Bhutan is determined to keep her cultural traditions alive through education. We then drive through the Begana Valley to Dodina, where we cross the pretty cantilevered bridge and then walk for about an hour up to the dramatically situated Cheri Monastery. This was constructed in 1619 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal and is a renowned place of retreat. For those not wanting to take this walk, it is possible to visit the Tangbo Monastery, also perched on the side of a hill and equally interesting. Overnight Thimphu (B, L, D)

monday April 27 Thimphu to Punakha

Depart Thimphu and drive up through oak, pine and rhododendron forests over the dramatic Dochu-La pass (3,140 m), where on a clear day one can get magnificent views of the Eastern Himalaya. The road winds down through varied forests into the warmer and semi-tropical Punakha Valley. After lunch, visit the impressive Punakha Dzong. Known as the “Palace of Great Happiness”, it is the former winter capital and today the administrative seat of the district. The fortress is strategically placed at the confluence of two rivers, the Pho Chu and Mo Chu. It was built in 1637, and in 1907 Bhutan’s first king was crowned here. Later in the afternoon we walk through paddy fields to the fertility temple of Chime Lhakhang, built by Drukpa Kunley (known as the Divine Madman). Overnight Punakha (B, L, D)

tuesday April 28 Exploring the Punakha area

This morning we take a 30-minute walk up through beautiful scenery to the four-storey Khamsum Yuelley Namgyal Chorten, standing majestically on a ridge above the Punakha Valley. It is a splendid example of Bhutan’s current artistic skills and was commissioned by the Queen Mother, Ashi Tshering Yangdon Wangchuck, to promote peace and harmony throughout the kingdom. After a picnic lunch, the walk back down to Punakha goes through the delightful village of Yabesa and past two royal palaces and a cave hermitage (used by a 13th-century Tibetan said to have supernatural powers). The majority of the day is free to relax. Overnight Punakha (B, L, D)

wednesday April 29 Punakha to Trongsa

We enjoy a scenic drive to Trongsa, situated on a steep ridge and offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Trongsa is home to an impressive dzong built in 1647 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgayl and originally the seat of power over Central and Eastern Bhutan. Both the first and second

kings of Bhutan ruled the country from this seat and all the kings have held the position of Trongsa Penlop (Governor) prior to ascending the throne. There is an excellent museum in the watch tower, which explains the history of the area, the monarchy and its culture. Overnight Trongsa (B, L, D)

Thursday April 30 Trongsa to Bumthang

This morning we drive further east to the wide open valleys of the Bumthang area, regarded as the cradle of Bhutanese civilization and filled with sites of mythological and religious significance. En route, stop in Zugney and visit the weaving centre, to see the locally produced hand-woven woollen cloth known as yathra. On arrival our first stop is Kurjey Lhakhang, a monastery that is the resting place of the first three kings of Bhutan. We also visit Jampa Lhakang, said to be one of the 108 temples built by a Tibetan king in 659 AD on a single day, to pin down an ogress, and Tamshing, a monastery that is the seat of an important Bhutanese lama, the current incarnation of Pema Lingpa, who we may regard as the ‘patron saint’ of Bhutan. Overnight Bumthang (B, L, D)

friday mAy 1 The Tang Valley

We spend the day in the remote but beautiful Tang Valley, one of the four mountain valleys that comprise the region. On the way, we visit the sacred Membar Tsho, ‘the Flaming Lake’, one of Bhutan’s most important pilgrimage sites, where sacred Buddhist texts hidden by Guru Rimpoche in the 8th century were reputedly miraculously recovered by Pema Lingpa in the 15th century. We then take a gentle walk to the magnificent manor house of Ogyenchoeling, originally a monastery but a palace from the mid-19th century. It houses a small museum, which gives a fascinating insight into the everyday life of the Bhutanese aristocracy. If time permits, we will also visit the Pema Choling Nunnery, dedicated to Pema Lingpa. Overnight Bumthang (B, L, D)

saTurday mAy 2 bumthang

Today we explore more of the landscapes of the area, including a walk through the cluster of villages and streets at Jakar in the Choekor Valley. There is the option to take a scenic walk through the Ura Valley. Overnight Bumthang (B, L, D)

sunday mAy 3 to Wangdue

A long day on the road takes us to Wangdue, breaking the journey for lunch, and at Prakar Dzong to see some excellent examples of local weaving and textiles. Overnight Wangdue (B, L, D)

monday may 4 to Paro

This morning we visit the Sangcheng Dorji Lhuendrup Lhakang Nunnery, before departing for Paro and stopping for lunch on the Dochu-La pass. This afternoon we visit Simthoka Dzong, the first dzong constructed by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal. This was completed in 1631 and contains some beautiful sculptures, as well as some high quality murals of the arhats. We arrive in Paro in the late afternoon. Overnight Paro (B, L, D)

tuesday mAy 5 Explore Paro

This morning we visit the imposing Rinpung Dzong, or ‘fortress on a heap of jewels’, built in 1646 by Shabdrung Nawang Namgyal. Housed in the dzong’s ancient watchtower (Ta Dzong) is the National Museum, which not only contains works of art but also handcrafted objects of daily life, costumes, armour and even stamps. We walk back over the charming cantilevered bridge to Paro town, where there may be an opportunity to see an archery competition. Archery is the national sport of Bhutan and, aside from the skilled marksmanship, it involves a number of rituals, dancing and singing. The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the natural beauty of the valley and surrounding hills, or walk amongst the traditional-style houses and mingle with the friendly locals. Overnight Paro (B, L, D)

Monday mAy 6 The Tiger’s Nest

This morning enjoy a one-two hour walk up to the viewing point of Takstang Monastery, the Tiger’s Nest, perched on the side of a cliff 900 metres above the Paro Valley. It is believed that Guru Rinpoche arrived here on the back of a tigress during the 8th century, in order to subdue the local demons. Tragically damaged by fire in 1998, it has now been restored to its former glory. Those who wish can climb on up to the temple itself. There is then a walk down, followed by a visit to the Kyichu Lhakhang. This temple was originally constructed in the 7th century as a geomantic temple and is today one of the most sacred shrines in the kingdom. We visit the Paro bazaar and the rest of the day is at leisure, before we gather for a farewell meal. Overnight Paro (B, L, D)
