Fairview Hospital’s 2016 Gala, held on September 24th at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, raised over $150,000 for the

hospital’s Radiology Department. The proceeds will help Fairview to upgrade its Digital Radiography Unit and portable X-ray machine for the Emergency Department.

The event began with an elegant Italian-themed dinner reception. Following dinner, guests proceeded to the Mahaiwe, where a video reflecting the night’s “You Gotta Have Heart” theme told the story of Fairview’s Cardiac Services through vignettes of two patients.

Nationally renowned comedian Paul Reiser, the star of the event, did not disappoint. The widely acclaimed actor and author, who has returned to his stand-up comedy roots with humor, perspective and stories about marriage, children and simple everyday experiences, had the audience laughing and nudging each other at the hilarity of daily life for over an hour.

Highlighting the event was the surprise appearance of Vicki Kennedy, the wife of the late Senator Edward Kennedy, Congressman Joseph Kennedy III, and Congressman Richard Neal, who came to honor the Gala’s honorary chair and Fairview’s president, Eugene Dellea. Arranged by State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli, the special guests arrived to share the close relationship Dellea has had with the Kennedy family for over 50 years and the important role he and Senator Kennedy played in helping Fairview gain Critical Access Hospital status for Fairview Hospital in 2003.

“This was a wonderful event that is important for Fairview Hospital. The 25-member Gala Committee outdid themselves in every way this year and these efforts will have a direct impact on the quality of care we offer at our community hospital,” said Dellea, the event’s Honorary Chair.

Echoing the high regard shared by all for the evening’s honoree, David Phelps, President and CEO of Berkshire Health Systems, said, “For decades, Gene has been an important part of our community and has made exceptional contributions that warrant praise and recognition. He has been a tremendous partner in our work to ensure the residents of Berkshire County have access to high quality healthcare. He has been tireless in his advocacy for Berkshire County and the many organizations that are the fabric of our county. Above all, he is a cherished friend and colleague.”

Phelps continued, “On behalf of all at Berkshire Health Systems, I extend heartfelt appreciation to Gene Dellea for contributions that continue to benefit our community.”

Fairview President Eugene Dellea (far right) was given a surprise tribute at the 2016 Gala, as he was praised by some high profile guests, from right to left: Vicki Kennedy, the wife of the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy, Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy, III, Congressman Richard Neal and State Representative William “Smitty” Pignatelli.

Hundreds of people from throughout the Berkshire community and from within Berkshire Health Systems helped Fairview to celebrate its annual Gala. From left to right: Suzanne Arre, Fairview Admitting; Diane Kelly, RN, BMC Chief Operating Officer; and Bertha Holcomb.

The Fairview Gala drew hundreds of community residents, including from left: Scott Smith, Jed and Alicia Fink, Rich and Carrie Herrington, and Bruce and Sandy Kafenbaum.

Berkshire Health Systems has announced the appointment of Robert Lincer, MD, FACS, as the new Chair of the Department of Surgery at

Berkshire Medical Center. Dr. Lincer has also joined the physician staff of Berkshire Surgical Services of BMC and will be providing minimally invasive and general outpatient surgery at the North Adams Campus of BMC. Later this year, Berkshire Surgical Services of BMC will open a location at the Northern Berkshire Specialty Practices of BMC, on the first floor of the North Adams Campus.

Dr. Lincer joined the BMC medical staff earlier this year, succeeding Parvis Sadighi, MD, as Chair of Surgery, and Marcella Bradway, MD, who served as Interim Chair.

“We are pleased to welcome a surgeon with a proven history of leadership as our Chairman of Surgery,” said Diane Kelly, RN, BMC Chief Operating Officer. “Since joining our staff, Dr. Lincer has been working to continue the expansion of surgical services across the Berkshires, and is bringing outpatient general surgery to Northern Berkshire with the opening of a Berkshire Surgical Services of BMC practice at the North Adams Campus of BMC.”

Dr. Lincer came to the Berkshire after serving as the Chairman of Surgery at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT. Dr. Lincer was a member of the Connecticut Surgical Quality Collaborative, and was Chair of the Statewide Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Committee in Connecticut. He is board certified in General Surgery and fellowship trained in Surgical Oncology from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, NY.

Dr. Lincer served as Chairman of Surgery at Lawrence and Memorial since 2013, and he had served with Norwalk Hospital for nearly ten years, and previously worked with Stamford Hospital, in Stamford, CT. He received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency in General Surgery at New York University-Bellevue Medical Center, New York, NY.

In addition to Dr. Lincer beginning practice in North Berkshire later this year, he will be joined by a new general surgeon in early 2017 as the practice expands further. For an appointment with Dr. Lincer, call the Northern Berkshire Specialty Practices of BMC at 413-664-5411 or Berkshire Surgical Services of BMC at 413-445-6420.

Fall is here, which means the Berkshire United Way’s campaign season is in full swing. Our team is hard at work advocating for our efforts to build our community, and raise the money

we need to make sure that our work touches as many Berkshire County lives as possible.

Berkshire Health Systems and Berkshire Medical Center employees are critical to the success of the Berkshire United Way. As the area’s largest employer, your support, no matter how small or large, contributes greatly to our community, and helps to provide programs that are essential to people in need across the county.

Last year, one measure of our impact was 23,651 people touched by one of our funded programs, coalitions, or services. Our goal in the coming year is to invest in strategies that will increase those numbers by inspiring new donors to give and current donors to consider giving more.

Why should you give? One of our newer donors, Becky Ringer, recently shared the following story about how giving to Berkshire United Way changed her life:

Becky was 29 with two kids, a husband, and a full time job. She was about to graduate from Berkshire Community College when her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. Becky tried her best to support her mom during this difficult time, but she wasn’t quite sure what to do. One thing she did know was that her mom had always wished that one of her daughters would go to Smith College. Becky applied and she was accepted.

At the time, Becky was driving a 13-year old car that she and her mom knew wouldn’t survive the commute from Pittsfield to Northampton. So they set out on a search for a new car, together. The search proved fruitless, they just couldn’t find a car that Becky could afford. The last day of their search, just before school started, they drove by a sign, “You can win this car!” Becky’s mom looked at her and said, “I am going to win that car and I am going to give it to you!” They laughed and Becky began her first semester at Smith driving over route 9 every day in her old, rusty, rattling car.

One semester and three major car repairs later Becky was ready to throw in the towel. As she told her husband that she was going to quit, the phone rang. It was her mother, who said, “I won the car!” Becky knew at that moment everything was going to be alright.

Becky’s mom gave her the car and Becky completed her degree at Smith. She is now paying it forward as the education and training manager for Pittsfield Community Connection, a local program providing mentoring services for youth. Becky understands first-hand how Berkshire United Way is building our community and has vowed, “I will always be a donor.”

Doug McNally, retired principal of Taconic High School shares Becky’s passion for supporting Berkshire United Way. “As a long time educator, I have personally seen the impact of the work that Berkshire United Way has been doing over the years,” he said. “Our high schools have seen a significant reduction in drug and alcohol abuse by students and the teen birth rate has been cut in half. Support for quality early education has led to many more children prepared to enter kindergarten ready to succeed, and stronger, stable families provide the support children need to prosper in school and life. For these reasons I have always been a strong supporter of Berkshire United Way.”

Together, we can make a difference, so please consider joining our family of donors. BHS/BMC has set up an easy payroll deduction as part of their annual campaign. Please help us to help our community.

• William F. McMahon, a cook at the former Hillcrest Hospital, now the Hillcrest Campus of BMC, died on October 12th at the age of 61.

The staff of Berkshire Health Systems offers its deepest condolences to their friends and family.

“Physician, nurses and staff in general were competent, had excellent bedside manners, didn't seemed rushed; in short, seemed to be there just for me, even though they were fully scheduled. This was great team work.” – Comment from a North Adams Campus of BMC patient

“The food and service was comparable to a quality restaurant.” – Comment from a BMC Surgical Services patient

“From the time I arrived at reception, my husband and I were extremely impressed with each and every person we had contact with.” – Comment from a North Adams Campus of BMC patient

“I am particularly pleased with the introduction of the Cardiac Rehab Maintenance Program. Thank you.” – Comment from a Fairview Hospital patient

“My mammogram techs are always super people. I've gone to the Women’s Imaging Center for a few years now, so I've had a number of techs and they were so great. My last tech was respectful, friendly, explained everything and was patient and kind. She was flawless in her job. It was a genuine display of a person who really cared about her patients, so yes, I would recommend Women's Imaging Center. All five-stars in all categories. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to compliment your staff.” – Comment from a BMC Women’s Imaging Center patient

“You have one of the best hospitals and medical staff. I was fortunate enough to be admitted to while on vacation several hours from home.” – Comment from a BMC Surgical Services patient

“The female resident in charge of my care was very intelligent, very attentive, explained everything thoroughly and responded every time a new complication arose and the nurses needed an assessment. She is a wonderful doctor.” – Comment from a BMC Telemetry Unit patient

“The nurses great and my doctor was fine. The North Adams facility operated like a well-oiled machine.” – Comment from a North Adams Campus of BMC patient

“I thought I would have to wait a long time, but was very surprised at how fast I was in and out. And everyone was very pleasant and smiling.” – Comment from a BMC Outpatient Imaging & Testing Center patient

“(My relative) just spent 2 ½ days at Fairview diagnosed with Anaplasma. Dr. Christopher Clark and the whole staff were just very professional and caring.” – Comment from the relative of a Fairview Hospital patient

“Falling and breaking my hip while on vacation I did worry about where and who would be caring for me. Berkshire Medical Center put my mind to rest real fast. I cannot say anything bad about BMC.” - Comment from a BMC Orthopedic Unit patient

“I cannot say enough about the quality of care and the friendliness of all of the nursing staff at the Crane Center. They are tops.” – Comment from a Crane Center for Ambulatory Surgery patient
