ABOUTVIJAYACOLLEGE
VijayaCollegewasestablished in1945, during thepre– independenceera,withanobjective to imparteducation toeconomically and sociallyweaker sectionsof the society.The collegehas completed73yearsofpurposeful existencecateringtotheeducationalneedsofstudentsbelongingtovariedsocialstrata.Consideringthatsocialresponsibilityandholisticdevelopmentare integralactivitiesofaneducation institution likeoursa twodayconferenceonAmbedkar isplanned.Itisexpectedtocreateawarenessinstudentsonvarioussocial,politicalandeconomicplightsofsociallyoppressedclasses.
ABOUTTHECONFERENCEThetheme fortheconferenceisrightlyselected“DR.AMBEDKAR:APOLITICALTHINKERANDSOCIALREFORMER”bearinginmindtheacutedissatisfactionwiththeanomaloustreatmentmetedouttothepeopleofthecommunitytowhichDr.AmbedkarbelongedaswellasthosewhoarevictimsofthesocialhierarchyinIndia.Hewastotallycommittedtotheannihilationofthecastesystemandbelievedthatonlythroughtheabolitionofcastecanalloppressedpeoplebereallyliberated.Ambedkar'svisionwastoabolishcasteismineveryshapeandformsinceitinvolvesthesubordinationofman'snaturalpowersandinclinationstotheexigenciesofsocialrules. Thegreatlycherishedidealsof“fraternityandequalitywerethecementwithwhichhewantedtobindtogetheratotallycohesivenation”.Ambedkar'sphilosophywasthatself-respectandhumandignitywereofparamountimportanceinafreerepublic.Hisaimwasnotcommunalandnotlimitedtopersonalbene�it,butitwasessentiallysocialandhuman,relatedtoallwhosufferedfromslavery,injustice,tyrannyandexploitation.DrAmbedkar'sprinciplewasnotto�ightagainsttheparticularpersonswhocreatedafrustratingsituationforhimandhisfellowsufferers,becausethecauseofthesituationwasnotthesepersonsbutthesocialphilosophywhichsupportedasocialsystemofinequalities.Hislong-rangeresponsewasadirectattackagainsttherootcause.
MOTIVATIONFORTHECONFERENCEDr.Ambedkar'slifeandletterswerecommittedtothebasicstenetsofliberty,equalityandfraternityasthebasicprinciplesofdemocracy.Thesamephilosophy informsthebasisof the IndianConstitutionthathedrafted for thepeopleof thiscountry.However,we�indthatintheeraofglobalization,socialandeconomicinequalitiescontinuetopersist.Ambedkar'sdreamofasocietybasedonsocio-economicjustice,humandignityandequalityisyettoberealised.PerhapsweneedtogobeyondBabasaheb'sprogrammeofsocialreforminthestruggletoestablishanegalitariansociety.Oneofthewaysinwhichtocarryonhislegacywouldberethinkhisthoughtsinthelightofcontemporaryproblemsandissues.

HasIndiamovedawayfromAmbedkar'sideasandthoughts?
WhatarethewaysinwhichwecanstrengthenthefoundationsofdemocracyasenshrinedinourConstitution?
OBJECTIVESOFTHECONFERENCE RevisitAmbedkar'sthoughtsondemocracy,constitutionalityandsocialchange. Exploretheideaofsocialjusticeforasocietythatencompassessocialinequalities,deepdiversities,exclusionand
marginality. Re�lectcriticallyon currentsocial,politicalandeconomicshiftsinoursocietyinthelightofDr.B.R.Ambedkar's
politicalphilosophy. Createasenseofself-respectandprideintheoppressedclassesofsociety
Waysandmeansofelevatingtheoppressedclassesinthesocio–political–economic�ields
Anidealsocietyshouldbemobile,shouldbefullofchannelsforconveyingachangetakingplaceinoneparttootherparts.Inanidealsocietythereshouldbemanyinterestsconsciouslycommunicatedandshared.Thereshouldbevariedandfreepointsofcontactwithothermodesofassociation.Inotherwordsthereshouldbesocialendosmosis.Thisisfraternity,whichisonlyanothernamefordemocracy.DemocracyisnotmerelyaformofGovernment.Itisprimarilyamodeofassociatedliving,ofconjointcommunicatedexperience.Itisessentiallyanattitudeofrespectandreverencetowardsfellowmen.
