While being craned, the metal begins to cool and acrust forms across its surface. During pouring, partsof the crust can break away, interrupting the metalflow and, potentially, leading to a steam explosionthat could result in severe injury and damage to theplant. Traditionally, our personnel used long paddlesto control the crust during pouring and to preventan explosion. The task required operators to wearlayers of protective clothing and to work in an

‘extreme’ environment.

sustainable employmentopportunitiesAs part of the ongoing pursuit of Zero Harm, BHP BillitonPetroleum drilling teams identified recycling as a wayto reduce waste from the rigs that went to licensedcontractors for disposal in landfill. After our peopleimplemented the segregation system, we contractedAccess Real Choices (ARC), a non-profit organisationdedicated to the welfare of individuals with learningand development disabilities in New Iberia, Louisiana,US. This organisation separates and repackages thewaste for resale to local recycling plants. BetweenJune 2006 and December 2007, more than 68 tonnes

of material was diverted from landfills and recycled.The initiative has reduced our disposal costs, raisedrevenue for ARC, and provided employment for40 people within ARC.

Antamina Mining FundIn December 2006, the Peruvian Government andthe mining industry established a five-year general

contribution program to support social programs inthe country’s poorest areas. Our 33.75 per cent ownedAntamina Mine was the first to sign an agreement withthe government, under which companies contributethree per cent of their pre-tax profits.

With an initial contribution of $64.3 million, weestablished the Antamina Mining Fund, which accountsfor 40 per cent of the mining industry contributionfor the program’s first year. STEWARDSHIP PROGRAMSWhile we control extraction, and in some instancesprocessing, of our products, we are also concerned thatlife cycle aspects we don’t control, such as transport,some processing, manufacturing, use and disposal,are undertaken safely and responsibly.

In bringing together stakeholders in the life cycleof our products, we can determine concerns andresponsibilities and work cooperatively so thatour products do not cause harm at any point in

their life cycle.During FY2008, we continued our involvementin several industry initiatives, where we work withother resources companies, industry and commodityassociations and governments to develop standardsand verification systems to ensure compliance by themining sector with environmental, human rights andsocial standards.

Our customers represent the next stage in the life cycleof our commodities; and, through workshops with ourmarketing personnel, we are working collaborativelywith them to reduce the impact of minerals productionon the community and the environment.

We are also continuing to support the use by our

customers of the GreenLead self-assessment tools.Initiated by our Cannington silver, lead and zincoperations (Australia), the GreenLead program isa product stewardship program based on the soundmanagement of materials and products in the leadlife cycle.

An example of our work with customers is our programto introduce stewardship concepts to a range ofChinese organisations, including state agencies,national commodity associations, lead smeltersand battery exporters.

In March 2008, the inaugural meeting of theGreenLead China Working Group occurred and,as a result, Yangzhou Apollo Battery (China’s largest

battery exporter) has become the first Chinese leadfacility to complete the GreenLead assessment toolsthat are currently being trialled globally.

We remain a member of the World Nuclear Associationand chair their Uranium Stewardship Working Group.In Australia, we chair the Board of the AustralianUranium Association and its Uranium StewardshipWorking Group. Our uranium product is only sold tocountries approved and monitored under bilateralagreements with the Australian Government andthat are signatories to the international NuclearNon-Proliferation Treaty. All transport of our uraniumproduct during FY2008 was conducted safely.

Trees for LifeIn Zululand, South Africa, where BHP Bill iton’sHillside and Bayside aluminium smelters operate,rural communities are often characterised by their pooreducation, health and social infrastructure. BHP Billitonand Wildlands Conservation Trust’s Indigenous Treesfor Life initiative aims to address disillusionmentand despondency by creating a framework foryoung unskilled community members to participateas ‘Tree-preneurs’.

The Tree-preneurs are trained in indigenous treepropagation techniques, provided with propagationstarter packs, mentored through the propagationprocess and provided with a market for the trees thatthey propagate. Participants generate much neededcash while improving their basic communication andnumeracy skills and, possibly most importantly,nurturing self-confidence and hope. Tree plantingactivities occur in the afternoon, after school.
