A message from David

From Little Things…We are still pinching ourselves about the opportunity to transform Box Hill North into a state of the art learning environment as part of the state government’s commitment to our improvement agenda.  Plans are already in full swing to act upon the $422,000 infrastructure planning and acceleration fund that will help accommodate an additional 100 enrolments ensuring that every child in our community has genuine access to the best education.  Community is one of our most prized possessions and at Box Hill North and we pride ourselves on personal relationships through an inclusive and welcoming environment.  This cornerstone will never change no matter the growing demand to be part of our journey.  To assist with the first stage of our planning, we are charged with the responsibility of putting forward a vision for teaching and learning at Box Hill North; a guiding light that will typify what we can expect to see ten years from now.  I therefore invite all members of our community to engage in providing feedback on our current position and hopes for the future.  There are two opportunities to contribute, both in the form of online surveys.  The first should take approximately 10 minutes to complete and focuses on three essential elements including:

1. What is unique to Box Hill North?

2. What challenges do we face in delivering the best educational outcomes for our students?

3. What opportunities could we explore?

The second should take approximately 20 minutes to complete and focuses on four design principles including:

1. Learning and learners are central

2. Schools are community hubs

3. Diversity is celebrated

4. A welcoming environment

Your feedback will be highly valued in this process and if you can find the time, I would be most grateful as it will help shape the vision and direction of this life-changing opportunity.  The timeline to have our initial input is exceptionally short, with all reports due for submission by 19th November.  I therefore request that you consider providing your feedback at your earliest convenience and thank you in advance.

House PrideOur house system has been totally flipped on its head with a great sense of excitement amongst our students and staff.  On Monday, each house took time to engage in paper plane construction, using collaboration, communication and the opportunity to learn with different peers and staff.  The key focus for this session was built under the framework of compassion; one of the four key values recognised at Box Hill North. It warmed my heart to see students seamlessly connect with one another as they concerntrated their effort

towards making paper planes, showing care and compassion for each other through challenge and support.  I particularly liked seeing the genuine sense of encouragement as trial and error took its course to determine 8 representatives from each house to compete in a ‘fly off’ in preparation for today.  The way in which our house leaders set the scene enabled students to take risks with the comfort and safety of each other as support, and not have to focus on winning or losing, rather, the opportunity to connect with different peers through different year levels.

This is only just the beginning of something that will help transform house pride and a greater sense of belonging at Box Hill North.

Positive Parenting please

The current pandemic has raised new parenting challenges for everyone.  Children have experienced disruptions to their daily life and increased worries about their safety and that of their family and friends.  Children can react in unexpected ways because they cannot express how they are feeling. The Triple P – Positive Parenting Program’s simple, practical strategies have been proven to work around the world, helping parents raise happy, confident children; set family routines and rules that everyone can follow; and balance work and family life with less stress.

The New BHNPSKParent Community Page

We welcome all kinder and school families to join our private parent Facebook group. This group has been created to support the families of Box Hill North Primary and Kindergarten to connect. The group is open to discussion about upcoming events and communication between kindergarten and school families.

Dear Parent, This week we observed book week and did several activities like treasure book hunt and creating bookmarks. Children actively participated and shared their favourite books with educators.

(left) Children looking for book "Puppy Love"     (right) "Up Up and Away"

Harvey brought a book about building aeroplanes. Linking our schools value of compassion to build personal connections, OSHClub also was involved with the school's activity and our children made paper aeroplanes.

Enrolling your childEnrolling your child in OSHClub is easy and free. All you need to do is complete an enrolment form online at www.oshclub.com.au where you will have the option of booking as either a permanent or casual user.I believe this to be beneficial for all families as once your child is enrolled you then have the comfort of knowing the program is available to you anytime should any unforeseen circumstances arise. It also gives you the assurance of knowing that your child or children will be cared for in a safe, warm and friendly environment. Time to Slip, Slop, Slap!Just a reminder that as it is Term 4, it’s time to Slip, Slop, Slap! Please make sure your child brings a hat to the OSHClub program. OSHClub has a “No hat- No outside play” policy. OSHClub also provides sun cream. If your child is allergic to a particular type of sun cream, please inform the coordinator (Mandy) at the program. We also encourage you to read our sun smart policy. Did you know Box Hill North OSHClub has a philosophy? We are always striving to improve and are currently focusing on effective leadership and management which directly contribute to the creation of a quality environment for your child’s learning and development

The OSHClub Promise: Happy Children Learning! An area we are specifically focusing on this term is reviewing our Box Hill North OSHC Philosophy. Our current philosophy is:

Over the coming weeks, we would love to hear what you think- tell us in person, send a text message to the program phone, leave a note on the sign in/ out desk- any and all feedback is welcomed as we want you to help shape the kind of program we provide.

Next week’s goal:  To Observe children's week. Children's Week is a national celebration that recognises the talents, skills, achievements and rights of children. It will run from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2020, with thousands of Victorian children taking part in the festivities. The theme for Children's Week 2020 celebrates the right of all children to choose their own friends and safely connect with others. This is based on Article 15 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

At OSHClub our motto is “Happy Children Learning” and we create a stimulating environment to ensure all children are engaged while doing things they love. Every session includes both a passive (e.g. cooking, art, reading) and an active (e.g. sports, games, competitions) activity to cater for the wide variety of children we have here.See you next week!Mandy and Prachi
